Looks hot up around Newcastle and the Central Coast/Hunter Valley region of NSW where my aunty is atm, currently 32C with a forecast top of 35C! Ouch!! eek

I'm wondering how my aunty will be handling the heat, especially since she'll be returning to Melbourne tomorrow where it's currently 13C with an expected high of 16C today and a top of 20C tomorrow before 16C again on Grand Final Day lol poke

Stark contrast in the Snowy Mountains, currently only 3C at Cabramurra, -0.3C at Charlotte Pass, -2.1C at the Thredbo Top Station, only around 9-10C at Cooma and Bombala, about 11C in the Corryong/Khancoban area! And yet a rather mildish 21C at Merimbula on the South Coast (perhaps a little cooler though if the wind chill is taken into consideration)

Edit: also an astonishing temperature variation around the Sydney and Blue Mountains region (factoring in the elevation): 27C in the Sydney CBD, and around 25-27C in the Homebush/Parramatta/Blacktown/Penrith area where many of my Sydney-based friends live, but brrr it's only about 14-15C around Katoomba and Blackheath! crazy eek

I've just heard reports, particularly on Facebook, of several bushfires raging out of control around the Mid-North Coast of NSW, particularly around Taree, not good news (was about 37C in that area earlier today)! frown

Also, reports of wind damage around Canberra, Queanbeyan, and Goulburn:

I was hosing the dust off my solar panels today using the water from my rain tank.
The pump that puts pressure into the hose is powered by the solar panels that are now just a bit more efficient because of the water that cleaned it off.
And the water that washed the solar panels goes straight back into the tank.

Ahhh ... the eco friendly feedback loops.

Looking at any model does not bring any joy, bursts of NW winds about 3-4 days apart, each getting warmer. Come November if we have not wriggled out of this pattern we are facing severe fire issues.

Illawarra was blessed by good rain early this month, but the grace period is "evaporating".

I had the day off today and went on a bush walk in the Blue Mountains near Mt Victoria. My usual bush walking season is from May - October as I like to do it in the cooler months. Not been on many walks this year so this was a final effort for the year.

I can confirm pretty much what we already know, it is BONE DRY out there, it really is. Driest I have seen some areas up there in late September for a few years. The rain from a few weeks ago has done little.

2013 - not a classic bush walking year.

Snakes were pretty active up there today by the way!!!!!!

Going to be a warm one today too, and with the passage of the vigorous cold front we should see some 60-80kmhr gusts in Sydney somewhere today.

Melbourne got hammered.

You're not wrong Jon77. We live right on the bush up here in the Mountains & have been watching my dogs like hawks on our walks near bushland as we have seen more snakes this year than any other year. It is so dry that every day we get heat & wind at the moment we are prepared for fires. Slight breeze up here at the moment at Faulco will see what the afternoon brings.

Some years I can go a whole bush walking season and see one or two snakes. Usually inactive and just sunning themselves on a rock or something. Seen more in one day yesterday than in a whole year and some on the move. Must be a combination of the weather, breeding and plenty of food around at the momen.

Or maybe it is a lack of food driving the snakes towards more populated areas up there this year, I am no expert so just guessing.

Things still look on track for the higher chances of storms being over parts of the northeastern third of the state (as well as inland southern QLD) later today (Tue) & overnight. Lots of forcing from upstairs (strong midlevel shortwave/upper trough/right exit region of the jet streak) leading to strong updrafts despite low CAPE... so some might try to become severe (e.g. strong wind gusts/hail).

Here's the latest output from my script from 7am today, through the overnight hours, til 7am Wed. It still has an occasional tendency to overestimate storm severity when there''s lots of synoptic scale uplift):

The Sydney Storm Shield has returned and is very evident on Ken's output there!

The wind is really picking up now. 70km\h gusts or above in Richmond, Penrith and Badgery's Creek. 106 at Mt Boyce earlier. All we need now is a tree, gravity and a power line to work together and start a grass or bush fire.
