Unfortunately a very heavy frost in Walcha this morning -5.8. Everybody had gotten a bit excited with the warm weather and had planted out frost susceptible veges (including myself). Total disaster despite the use of coverings! BTW, Salisbury Plains -5.1.

Quite unexpected, but not complaining, would love to see a good drop state wide!!

Nice Eddy!

Still awaiting the first thunderstorm of the season up here. The last t'storm here was on June 24th (T'storm = At least one flash/rumble of lightning/thunder while the 'cell' is moving over). Two nearby t'storms in mid September but they missed town. A slow start to the season along the North Coast.

This coming Thursday is shaping up to be a stinker, especially in the western burbs. 35c forecast for Penrith, could get a 36c or even a 37c.

Lets hope the wind stays down!

The weather we've been having in Spring so far is probably what most Sydneysiders think of as proper Summer weather, with it's mostly sunny skies and warm, occasionally hot, afternoons. As a bonus, it still cools down at night. I suspect that the real Summer when it arrives will be a disappointment, with it's regulate SE changes followed by two or more dull overcast days; frequent showers; and sea breezes which are often sea gales that can make 23 degrees feel like 15. Common refrains in Sydney: October 15 "can't wait for Summer"; December 15 "where's Summer?"

Indeed, summer in Sydney is often a scud fest. Can't complain really though. I think Sydney has a pretty good winter, spring and autumn climate.

Last spring actually I seem to recall we had a very frequent and strong SE changes in Oct / Nov and it was only when we reached December that it started to settle down and we got that hot summer.

A few strong SE changes might not be a bad thing right now actually, still very dry out there.

Nice hail drifts there Eddy. Looks like the same size pellets we had here but no where that much to pile up like that.

BOM upgraded the Sydney forecast from 35c to 37c for tomorrow I see, and also very windy.

Wonder if we could give 40c a push in favoured areas tomorrow? Doubt it will reach that, but maybe the odd 38c or 39c.

http://www.smh.com.au/environment/weathe...1008-2v641.html

A few records that could go tomorrow -

Thursday's maximum may also challenge Sydney's current early-season high of 37.4 degrees, reached on October 4, 1942, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

The city's current October record is 38.2 degrees set in 2004.

Both fire services have been concerned about Thursday for some time now. Each forecast model is point towards a difficult day should, and should be a very important word here, a fire start.

What everyone must remember is that the Fire Danger Index is an indication of how a fire will run if one was to start.

The put it in perspective, the old FDI for extreme was set at 50+, now it must reach 70 to trigger that. In a number of areas the FDI will be 90+, just short of a Catastrophic Fire danger. It has been some time since we had such a large area under such levels and is unheard of in early October. The lasted mapping shows an extreme pocket from the Illawara all the way through to Port Stephens.

Remember, if you see a fire without a fire vehicle call 000. The more reports, the better the information about where it is and how big it is.

The NSW Rural Fire Service has implemented a total fire ban for many areas on Thursday. Still looks on track for dangerous fire weather over parts of the state on Thursday as well as the chance of dust over some western/southern parts.

Here's a couple of outputs from my scripts. Re the fire weather map, one thing it doesn't take into account is the lack of vegetation cover in desert areas:

I see Sydney's forecast maximum for tomorrow has been 'upgraded' to 39 degrees. That would be a 150+ year record at Observatory Hill. It's not often that a record is forecast, so that would be a 'courageous' (in the 'Yes Minister' sense) forecast for the BOM. It might turn out to be the hottest day of the coming season on the Coast if weather patterns flip into something more normal in coming weeks.

Does anyone know what time the Southerly change is due in tomorrow to Sydney? The smh says "late on thursday evening" and the bom says :"shifting southerly 25 to 40 km/h during the afternoon and evening"

Important info for me as I have a 7 month old and am planning where to keep her tomorrow

Thanks

Weather Channel on Foxtel says change will reach Sydney around midnight or early hours of Friday. As is often the case, the BOM forecast is less than informative. I read it as meaning some time between midday and midnight. Twenty four hours out, the BOM should be able to do better than that.

UPDATE: BOM forecast updated 5:33PM. Now says 'during the late evening', which I interpret as 9:00PM to midnight.
