Sydney doing a great job of avoiding the rain right now, rain patches to the south and the north but nothing in between.

Not wrong about that Jon. Sydney doing it's thing again but norwest winds do usually create a rain shadow over the basin and it's outskirts most of the time.
The southerly has moved through Nowra going by the obs so maybe a drop or two later.
30c outside and clear skies to the west. If only a nice squall line would move through, it's been years!

Front hit 8:20 pm. A bit of fine ash with the wind.

8:30 - Ash was just with the gust on the front (phew!). It is desperately dry in this area - we missed the last couple of rain events.

I know it's wishful thinking Homer, the temp went from 28.8c back up to 29.2c in half an hour here. Grass is starting to go brown around here as well.
That clear gap on radar moving over this region is showing up nicely again for the billionth time.
At least we know that there will be a scud fest later, cant wait for that exciting weather.

That cell heading toward Scone looks nasty. Probably some big wind in that storm:

The change went through Forresters Beach on the Central Coast around 9:15 PM. It is now quite windy with enough rain (big drops) to make it worth starting the windscreen wipers. There is a fair bit of sheet lightning to the North.

Certainly does look nasty Seabreeze!!
Its been a nasty day in this neck of the woods, fortunately no fires on this side of the Port, same cant be said for the south side. There has been a bit of damage around from the strong winds, trees down etc.
Plenty of lightning about, mostly ccs.
Smoke from the fire at Fingal Bay!!!

Smoke from Salt Ash

Fire and lightning lighting up the night sky!!

Wow, amazing images. Have been watching that Scone storm, which appeared to continue to strengthen. Riding right along along the change, perhaps even a left mover. Obs from there will be interesting!

This weather won't last into Summer. Onshore winds will take over from about the end of this month, with an increase in humidity and more frequent showers. SE changes followed by a day or two of dull, overcast weather will become a frequent occurrence while dry, hot, sunny weather will become less common. I suspect that many Sydney people will be disappointed with the Summer when it arrives. Even in a normal year, Sydney gets its best weather in Spring. I remember from my student days in Sydney how the weather seemed to go off around the time I finished the final exams for the year.

I always see the Christmas holls as the main change period around Sydney. December in to the first week of Jan is traditionally the peak bush fire season and a dry spring continuing to Christmas happens. Not saying these conditions will last to Christmas this year mind.

Last October we had a strong SE change every week it seemed before things turning very hot in Dec to Jan.

I always think the worst month to visit Sydney is February, usually pretty humid, cloudy and wet.

But yes summer in Sydney can be disappointing and December 2011 showed just how bad a summer month can be here.

We don't really have a temperate four season climate in the Sydney basin - it's closer to the sub-tropical climate seen further up the coast.

February to June is dominated by onshore winds and the potential for rain is quite high.

July to October is dominated by offshore winds and the potential for rain is quite low.

November to January can experience a mix of both plus a "storm season" similar to NE NSW and SE Queensland.

Anyone wanting to see the Sydney rain shield at full impact should look at the radar right now. Sydney surrounded by rain but not a drop in the basin.

Might change soon......................... or might not........ ho hum.

Well above looks heavy by the radar passing over Cessnock here in the hunter, but it only dropped enough to wet the road, all noise not much wet stuff.

Had a bit of a weird result from the southerly last night - 20mm in total, 16mm of which fell over the space of an hour while about 200m to my West was dry. The cell must have been developing just over the water and dumped on my place as a side effect. Peak wind gust of 67.3kph, so definitely one of the stronger changes this year.

Disappointing result- precipitation wise, for Sydney last night. After the change came through, sounded like steady rain had started up when going to bed. This morning though, no evidence of the night's rainfall, ground was bone dry again and humidity levels were back to 40%.
All this low humidity, lack of rain and warm temperatures is taking it's toll on the garden. I'm seeing plants dry up this year that didn't last year.

I agree that Sydney does not have a temperate climate (any longer). Rainfall is no longer reliable. I feel like we have more of a traditional Brisbane climate featuring a defined wet season, dry season. As others have said, we should see a change in pattern around Christmas to a more humid climate. Whether or not this gives us better storm chances though is unknown.

EDIT: Last night's rainfall totaled 4.2mm here.
