Certainly do show up well on the radar! Look very substantial fires indeed.

Still above 30c generally down in Sydney with a WNW wind.

Keep an eye on those plumes. They will go very nuts as the wind change makes itself felt.

The wind change, while cool, is not good news. The fuel moisture content is way to low for fire behaviour to be moderated much by a drop in temperature or a small increase in humidity. It will get worse as the change comes through until the wind eases and the RH comes right up.

Further to that, if you look at the Wollongong radar you'll notice the base of the Bargo fire has much stronger returns than it did 10 minutes ago.

RFS Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons says is looks like a number of homes have been lost in bushfire at Springwood.

Looks like the Lithgow fires is getting stronger lookign at the radar, some very strong / bright returns right now.

Down to just over 16 degrees here now. Cloudy but sadly no real sign of decent precip.

This keeps up, we might need to move to the west coast of Tassie to see regular rainfall.

7 fires now at emergency warning with another 8 at watch and act. No wonder the RFS site is suffering heavy traffic. Thinking of all in the path and dealing with these fires - would be stretched to the limit. Storms kicking off to our South west, with little rain could see fires up here before the rain arrives in the morning.

I've not seen anything like this in Sydney in October before. This is more like the New Year type fire emergency days. It's raining ash, burnt leaves and debris here 100KM away from the fire in Lithgow. Appalling conditions.

Ominous orange sky over Sydney and as mentioned crazy for October.

Getting quite dark outside now but can see light in the distance where the smoke isn't covering.

I had no idea that you could track smoke on radar. This is good to know.
Ch 10 news has been showing the fires, let's hope for a wind speed drop, though it looks like a change of direction only. That Sydney earthcam is valuable.

RFS just posted a thermal linescan of the Lithgow fire on their facebook page. The head looks to be somewhere around Mt Irvine, which I think would make the northern flank something like 20km long? Be a mammoth job to contain that one, especially after this change turns the flank into the front.

Can anyone remember it being both so dry and so windy this early in the year? I'd have to go beyond my memory.

Dlcat, Sydney can often cop bouts of hot, dry and windy conditions at this time of year (while at the same time, Melbourne is freezing its tits off). This is not the first time we've had a sizeable fire outbreak in October. On the flipside, fire activity around Sydney drops off markedly in the latter half of January as we shift into our "subtropical" summer with frequent rain events.

However, what is unusual is the number of strong fronts, which bring a new round of heat every time they cross eastern NSW. You can blame the low SAM for that. Add in the abnormal warmth over the Centre and you have a recipe for dire conditions.

My deepest sympathies to all those who have been impacted by today's fires.

Amazing seen in the CBD today with that smoke plume. I was driving down William street this arvo sitting at the lights with bits of ash fall on my car and the fire was in Lithgow!

My deepest sympathies to all those who have been impacted by today's fires as well. The only good news out of this is that there has been no reported loss of human life.
