Just heard from a friend at Port Macquarie of ping pong ball sized hail. Roof and bonnet of her car copped a few dings.

It's amazing how such a huge frontal storm system can form and yet Sydney basin still manages to curtail activity like it is today. Completely dry here and if it weren't for the distant thunder, you would not suspect super-cell activity to the north. I would love a detailed study into what causes Sydney's "storm shield" as simple orographic lifting and elevation can't be the only reason.

Frustrating, isn't it?
When you look at what's happening further north, it's enough to drive someone to drink. Maybe a spot or two later, but not expecting much. As usual.

Don't know how you only got 5mm stormy. Had 35mm here in about 25 mins, with flash flooding and 2 cm hail.

From bone dry to too much too fast. Still need 8 inches here, but not in 2 hours, over 3 days would be good.

Back building and more to come for us.

Yes that is all I got,I was driving through Bellbird heading home when the storm came through it was heavy there but no hail,it must have intencifyed when it moved further east over you mate.

Here on the central coast we have gone from hot dry and smokey to blustery wet and wild and very wintery in just a couple of hours.

Well what a storm that was. Winds anywhere between 100-120kmph, Hailstones the size of golf balls, thankfully the hail did'nt last long, rain im not sure how much, estimate 30-40mm. Quite a few largish branches down.
Good news is the gopro survived it!!

Pretty crazy over here, rain is still coming and we've had 54mm so far. Wind peaked at 57.6kph (that's wind speed, not gust). Lots of lightning but no hail around.

Between the two storms there was a lot of really well defined thin wisps of fog being sucked straight up into the clouds before disappearing, was crazy how quick the water vapour was being sucked up. I haven't noticed that happening before, usually just see general areas of fog being lifted up. Anyone know it's a common occurrence? Guessing it was being helped up by the strong wind.

winds pretty epic from the south here. Check the low pressure going over Cessnock. We are just to the south.
Must be an upper low transitioning......definite eye

Here is a short video of today's heavy rain in Mayfield near Newcastle just after 3:00PM. Far from the heaviest rain I've seen, but the heaviest I've seen for a while. It was also a bit blowy as you can see from the jacaranda in the next yard:

Some of those storms out to sea must have been violent. Took the dog for a walk along the river tonight & quite a few dead Shearwaters near the mouth. Nothing exciting here today unless you like scud.

Looking at the forecast and the models on this site my guess is that the hot dry phase is over and the switch has been flipped into the more regular (maritime) pattern for late Spring into Summer. So from now on I expect we will have regular SE changes with more cloud and rainfall and hopefully more storms.

Here are a couple of pics.
I could'nt travel anywhere as most streets around Hawks Nest were closed by emergencies services was lucky to get home, so photo opportunites were limited plus im not a big fan of taking photos of other peoples misfortunes but thats just me!!

This one is of the golf club car park

And this is the 9th hole, that little puddle at the height of the storm would have been close to two and half feet deep!!

I did'nt get any pics of the hail, by the time the storm finished the hail had melted plus the hail was scattered and as said before it did'nt last long!!

I agree to a point, but if it were only as simple as that. The traditional peak bushfire season around Sydney is late December / early Jan for a reason. Spring weather is highly variable and I never consider a true pattern flip until after the new year and the humidity levels traditionally rocket. Unless it is an exceptional spring / summer like 2011/12 which was very cold and very wet indeed, that would take some beating. Also forecast to be mid 30's for a couple of days over much of western Sydney at least and could get to 38c here or there.

The photos above of massive puddles are amazing and something we haven't seen around Sydney for months, it like a different world from down here where will are still dry! Very jealous.
