laugh Na mate quite happy with the climate here! laugh Weren't YOU the one that was going on and on and on about when Perth was going to get a start to Summer? Well it's jinxed you HARD hasn't it?!! wink

Yes, Gisborne has been quite wet of late during the weak/borderline La Nina years of '05/06.

Fine and sunny over much of NZ today under warm dry southeasterlies. Showers easing in the northeast as the low continues to depart eastwards.

Tmax: Kaitaia - 20C
Min-Tmax: Alexandra - 5C

Another beautiful day over the most of NZ, just cloudy skies over greater Gisborne. Morning fogs and frosts, some veils of high cloud developing from that SE Aussie low.

Tmax: Kaitaia - 21C (HOT!!)
Min-Tmax: Alexandra - 3C

Upcoming low set to deliver widespread persistent falls on Tuesday, what the southerly will do to it on Wed will be interesting through the North Island's East. Looking OK for another warm-advective snow event somewhere over Canterbury atleast smile

A cool cloudy day over NZ with high cloud increasing, and persistent fog in some places..

Flights in/out of Auckland and Christchurch Intl Airports were closed until midday and evening.
A direct flight from London led to passengers being diverted, then grounded at Ohakea due to no resources.. a 30 hour flight! :|

Dunno what the national high was..
But Alexandra got to a sizzling 1C

Should see some good totals gathered today along a warm front.. coming onto light rain now and it looks quite heavy 60km west of Auckland right now.

Becoming very cold too with snow, sometimes heavy.. UKMO brings thickness down to 524dm over Christchurch Friday midday smile
(here we go again!)

Am over in Auckland this week visiting the in-laws. Headed out to Manakau Head for a bit of sight-seeing yesterday. Was amazed that the whole Awhitu penisula was still covered in fog around 1pm before slowly lifting in the afternoon.

A local I spoke to mentioned they don't normally get fogs like that. The Harbour entrance looked very picturesque with a mixture of fog and sun (when it broke through).

Raining steadily now, hoping for some embedded storms to liven the afternoon up.

As one Mr Pearce put it to me this afternoon (referring to AKL wx) "It beats a 25 knot South Wester bringing -23465 dew points and cloudless skies!!!"

Ahh, Sydney in winter .... very boring.

Yes, very 'anti-michael' weather on the way with showers and gusty southwesterlies for the week ahead. XD

Widespread persistent rain over NZ today.. 41mm here since midnight here, and Tauranga east of here has already soaked up some 70mm.. Heavy rain warnings are in place over the east right across from the Coromandel Peninsular to Wellington.

Heavy warm-advective snow to about 400m in Canterbury.. the glorious run continues! laugh
All Canterbury ski fields reporting solid bases of atleast 110cm. Turoa on the south side of Mt Ruapehu already has a 220cm base.. and it aint even September!

Tmax: Bay of Islands - 16C
Min-Tmax: Queenstown, Alexandra - 5C

This July could be Wellington/Wairarapa's wettest on record... I don't think La Nina wants to leave???

Very cold over NZ with a departing low.. has been very wild in Wellington with sleet and southerly gales again.. sleety showers to sea level in Canterbury.. and snow to 300m where it shut Queenstown Ap. Fine in the west.. frosts developing now there.. but only if this wind dies down.

Tmax: Far North - 15C
Min-Tmax: Queenstown - 3C
Though Wellington only got to 9C and Chch 5.

Damp cool southwesterlies over the west of NZ today with some rain over Southland with a weak front ahead of a strong high. Fog cleared here over the Waikato at lunch. Mild and mostly fine in the east of both islands. Weather becoming quite settled again. smile

Much the same today with west to southwest winds but quite a bit sunnier.. tending dry northwest across the ranges. Should be much cooler tomorrow along the east coast as winds turns southerly.

Tmax: Timaru - 18C
Min-Tmax: I'gill, Dunedin, Westland, Taupo - 12C

Off to Samoa for a week.. where dewpoints are hovering around 22C with arvo thunderstorms. laugh

I was wondering, is there a big difference in temperature in summer and winter between the north and south of NZ.

In the UK, there can be as much as a 20C difference between London and northern scotland on the same day (For example on May 27th 2005, the max in London was 31C, but in Edinburgh in Scotland, the max was only 9C)

I wonder what's the coldest and warmest temps ever recorded in New Zealand for the winter months of July and August as well as for all-time?

Not as extreme but it can be 31 in Napier and be 17 in Southland or the west coast or Christchurch can have a fohn NW with 35c but Auckland it would only be 22 as it would be a south westerly that time.

Probably for August 20 or 21 as hot as it ever can in the north but I think its reached 25 in places like Christchurch again because of the NWer

That fohn nor'wester can bring about massive temperature changes. i.e. our hittest recorded temp ever..7/2/73 Rangiora, near Chch: 42.4C, then in the space of 10 minutes it dropped to 14C! And what's worse on the 6pm news weather segment.. they took the national highs off the 3pm observation! laugh (after the cold change came thru) How embarrasing.

A damp showery day over most of NZ today with the passage of an occluded front. Cold front only hit onto eastern Bay of Plenty of the NI.. which brought a fair amount of rain there. Fohn was turned on over the Hawke's Bay.
Upper trough now delivering thunderstorms and isolated hail over Buller/Taranaki.

Tmax: Hastings - 21C
Min-Tmax: Queenstown - 8C

Cheers

Early heavy showers over Kapiti this morning.. otherwise easing showers in the North and becoming fine. Mostly cloudy in the east of the SI with patchy drizzle. Otherwise it was fine and sunny.

Tmax: Napier, Kaitaia - 19C
Min-Tmax: Ashburton - 7C

Turning our attention now to a strong trough of low pressure over the Solomons.. which is expected to get quite wild over NZ by Sunday as it bears down with a heck of a lot of moisture.

Quite a bit of fog this morning, which shut Auckland Ap into the afternoon. Some 5000 people effected. And it's developing again there now.

Quite a windless day over much of NZ thanks to a high and a solid low inversion layer. But damp easterlies sent drizzle over coastal Canterbury and Wairarapa. High cloud increasing as the low nears.

Tmax: Kaitaia - 21C
Min-Tmax: Queenstown, Dunedin - 10C

Sure looks like a good 'ol storm coming up. laugh

Rain developed over Northern NZ as the low approached.. Heavy in the northeast.
Fine and sunny in the lower south.. increasing high cloud elsewhere.

Tmax: Levin, Bay of Islands - 16C
Min-Tmax: Queenstown - 9C

Heavy rain warnings are in place for tonight..
Baro dropping at a quick notch here now.

HEAVY RAIN EXPECTED FOR NORTHERN PARTS OF THE NORTH ISLAND

A complex area of low pressure over the north Tasman Sea is forecast to move
southeast and should cross northern and central New Zealand on Monday. It is
preceded by a strong unusually moist northeast flow and periods of widespread
rain. A heavy burst is expected to affect Northland overnight Saturday and much
of the remainder of the North Island during Sunday.
Another burst of heavy rain is likely to pass near eastern parts of
Northland and Coromandel Peninsula on Sunday evening and over Bay of
Plenty and the north of Gisborne on Sunday night and early Monday
morning.
70 to 100mm of rain is possible in parts of Northland and Auckland
with 100 to 150mm in Coromandel Peninsula, inland Bay of Plenty and
the higher parts of the lake Taupo catchment, but around 200mm in the
eastern ranges of Bay of Plenty and northern Gisborne. The rain is
expected to be accompanied by strong to gale northeasterlies for a
time on Sunday.
People in these areas are advised to watch out for rapidly rising
rivers and streams as well as surface flooding and slips. Driving
conditions could also be hazardous.

Widespread persistent rain over the North Island and upper SI today, which was the biggest factor in the cause of 10 deaths on the roads this weekend. frown
Dry mostly fine in the southwest of NZ. Forecasted wind was a bit of a fizzer, but the rain is exceeding predictions.

245mm so far on the Coromandel in 24 hours. Flooding is striking Wellsford north of Auckland, parts of the Bay of Plenty (Tauranga) now. Rain not ending anytime soon, that jetstream has revved up.

Tmax: Paeroa, Kaitaia, Whangarei - 18C
Min-Tmax: Queenstown, Alexandra - 7C

Looks good for more warm-advective snow tomorrow over Otago/Canterbury to around 400m.

laugh laugh laugh
