Its good to see it starting to heat up already, I am sure you guys must be loving it, gives you a chance to thaw out! I'm going to NZ at the end of the year and naturally have been trawling through the weather history pages that the Metservice have trying to get a better understanding of what to expect. I will be visiting Wellington, Nelson and good ole' Auckland and it appears that the weather in all 3 places can be quite different even on the same day. Looks as though your Summers can be fairly interesting, a lot more variable and unsettled than I first thought. With the occasional storm and/or heatwave, it should be fun. Also the Nelson area is the sunniest in NZ apparently so that is good news, though might mean I will have to share it with all you kiwis! :p It will mean I would visited some part of your little island in every season, so far Winter has been the best

Yes Nelson is very sunny due to thick sheltering from the SW-half.. still doesn't get anything like the sunshine hours of Perth! Bursts of heavy rain early this morning from Northland to BoP.. Mostly fine in the west of the NI, in fact fine everywhere else, just cloud clearing over Southland. Hey nowhere gets as much sunshine as Perth! thats why there are so many Kiwis here Where do you get that extremes data from? I find the metservice site extremely painful to navigate, though it has improved. Oh and is Mid Dome on mainland NZ?

Ahh cheers Willoughby! I take it from that you just love the Metservice! :p I have heard that a previous government sold off a whole lot of government companies and now you guys are suffering as a result. Ahh Mt John, I have heard of that place before, gets some very serious winds up there indeed, it holds the record for NZ doesnt it at something like 250km/hr?

Quite wet and miserable today thanks to the warm front SEVERE WEATHER WATCH FOR NORTHLAND AUCKLAND COROMANDEL PENINSULA BAY OF PLENTY GISBORNE HAWKES BAY WAIRARAPA ISSUED BY METSERVICE AT 1156hrs 09-Sep-2006
HEAVY FALLS OF RAIN EXPECTED IN THE NORTH AND EAST OF THE NORTH ISLAND
A large low over the Tasman Sea is moving towards the top of the country. Rain associated with this low is already spreading south over the North Island. Within this rain, thunderstorms are likely to give some areas short heavy bursts today and Sunday. Although it appears that it will not reach warning criteria, MetService will continue this watch for the Coromandel Peninsula and Bay of Plenty. These areas may still see localised heavy falls of 10 to 20mm in an hour. In Northland and Auckland, the threat of rainfall near warning criteria has eased and the watch is now lifted for these districts.
A cold front moving up the country is set to interact with the low over northern Hawkes Bay and southern Gisborne early Sunday. A rainfall warning has been issued for these areas. The remaining areas of Gisborne and Hawkes Bay may also see an extended period of rain and the watch will be maintained although amounts are not as likely to reach warning criteria.
People in these areas should keep up to date with the latest forecasts and check if further areas in this watch are upgraded to a warning.
The threat of prolonged rain over the Tararua District and Wairarapa has eased and these areas are no longer on watch. Hopefully some thunderstorms this evening.. dewpoints already up to 17°C over Northland behind the front.

Yesterday the Rain cleared to high cloud and moderate SE died out (in Auckland) and furthur north, this mornings low of 4°c which is below normal due to clear skies but unfortunately a SW flow is arriving bringing showers later and wind. The rest of the country was fine with light winds apart from a WSW at the bottom of the SI.Again most of the country will be fine apart from showers on the SI west coast and again deteroting weather to 8/8 late today in the north and west with SW and a slight SW flick in the Otago area later today

Mainly fine across the upper north under a southwest flow, just some late showers. Cloud and showers developed over Canterbury/Otago with constant showers around Southland. Wet day on the SI West Coast. Of course today's main talking point was the meteorite-sonic BOOM! Meteorite most likely cause of boom, observatory says UPDATED 4.30pm Tuesday September 12, 2006
A meteorite is believed to have burned up over Canterbury today before slamming into the ground. A loud boom heard throughout the region was most likely to be the meteorite, up to the size of a medicine ball, Stardome Observatory in Auckland said. The loud boom was heard over Canterbury, with sightings as far apart as Hanmer Springs in North Canterbury, and Hinds in Mid-Canterbury. Initial reports had come through the police communications system, with follow-ups from eyewitness accounts. >> Readers report: Sonic boom in Christchurch A Christchurch Fire Communications spokesman said the first calls from the public started at 2.53pm today, with people reporting windows rattling and the air "shaking". Observatory spokesman Andrew Buckingham said: "We're still finding out what's going on". "It sounds like a large meteor coming down... soccer ball size upwards," Mr Buckingham said. It was more likely to be one large rock entering the earth's atmosphere as a fireball, rather than a meteor shower. The boom was either the meteor breaking the sound barrier or exploding as it burned up. - NZPA Today's Tmax: Kaitaia, Dargaville, Ashburton, Darfield - 19C Min-Tmax: Waiouru - 9C

Fine almost everywhere except Auckland and northwards where the Southwesterly remained king and was strong in the morning with a pathetic 14°c max and continual showery activity. Elsewhere the country enjoyed sunny weather apart from some afternoon cloud in the east from Hawkes Bay to Wellington and few showers to the far south of the country.

There were showers today in Auckland, and not much sun... I could rush outside and take a photo of my car which is still wet! 3mm in my rain gauge.
