It was +0.9C so not quite there I would guess. Record (1968) was +2.2 on current 30-year mean. Perhaps in the top 20. Invercargill's SW spell was probably balanced by later NE with about average sun (not sure, haven't seen a number yet).

I'm a little bemused by the so-called 'tornado' event mentioned in NIWA's March summary... • Tornado Destructive localised winds were attributed to a tornado, which damaged a hall (lifting part of its roof) near Pembroke School in Stratford about 12.45 p.m. on the 21st of March. There was an incredible noise, and debris was seen flying up into the air. NIWA must've had the snooze button on when they read this dodgy report from a local news reporter. Totally agree with Paul M's assessment ( NZ wx forum ) that this appears more likely to have been a 'willy-willy' type eddy created in the lee of Mt Taranaki, particularly as there was no hint of any thunderstorm activity around at the time.

It does say "were attributed to", which probably gets them off the hook.

So why did NIWA include this statement in their introduction page? ...There were a number of other climate extremes with electrical storms and hail, high winds, and a tornado. Agree Matthew. It only took me a few minutes to find out what nearby general conditions were like that day and I don't have the resources that NIWA have. Pretty sloppy I thought and it doesn't do their reputation much good.

You should send them a note. It would also be a good idea to support the eventual reuniting of NIWA and MetService, as the artificial split created by 1980s ideologies was a nonsense and ultimately has spread scarce intellectual resources more thinly. Not to mention the financial objectives set by revenue-greedy ministers. BOM is in a far better position than this country's agencies - stories in this forum seem to indicate they aren't quite perfect, either.

RWood :- delving further into my grand-fathers weather box - I found this article which got my attention, it was printed in the Bluff (Southland) local paper.
12 March 1953
"With one reservoir empty and the other down to 11 feet level and falling rapidly, Bluff Council has imposed water rationing starting yesterday.
Water rationing which was last imposed in 1951, usually comes into force in June, the situation will be desperate if rainfall is below average over the next few months. Only 3.92in (99.6mm) fell during January and February".

That may have been a classic case of mistiming! March 1953 had 120mm and April 140mm at In'gill Aero - and March 11th had 1.67" from lon-ago memory! May thru' July were a bit below average but nothing special...

Report for Southland during February 1940.
"Persistant W winds carried frequent rains to southern districts which experienced a record wet February. In the case of Southland, this was the wettest of any month ever experienced. The registration of 72.74 inches (1847.6mm) at Homer Tunnel gauge was the greatest monthly total yet to be measured in New Zealand. Invercargill recorded 12.1 inches (307.6mm) - the wettest month ever experienced since measurements began in 1900".

You must be celebrating that 95mm! 299 at Aero that month. Not sure if Jan '84's 277 caught all the days of the month - records lost after things went underwater later! Of course the record monthly total for NZ has been well and truly upped with the later advent of higher altitude records - 2927mm at Cropp Creek, Hokitika catchment, Dec. 1995.

Heh heh, sure am celebrating the 95mm fall RWood (The most intense rain since June 2006 for the Bondi area and the highest daily fall since Sept 2006 (107mm). Ah yes the "January 1984" total is incomplete, 277mm before or during the build up to the big flood, so I think we can safely say based on estimations that January 1984 exceeded that of February 1940 and both probably are the only months to exceed the 300mm mark. My brother happened to be down there when the floods occurred and from what he told me - sounded pretty bad.

Very settled for the most part. Enjoying it. Comments in the NZ forum (Weather NZ) about significant rain around Ch'ch etc. that was supposed to be only drizzle, the other day, but very quiet really. 54.6 hrs sun here in 1st 7 days. So far this year rainfall here is down by about 35% despite a wetter January. Did you get my note re In'gill sun etc. there [just checking as you may not be monitoring it very often]? PS - our well-known friend from Melbourne was having a bit of a go at In'gill on the other NZ forum - you might like to read my responses!

Most places around Auckland recorded about 2 hrs of sunshine yesterday (a little more here on Waiheke) and, unless you were out on the more exposed harbours, winds peaked briefly at 'Strong' to 'Near Gale' force at best. Temps peaked around 12:45pm at about 17°C and dipped briefly to about 10°C at around 3:45pm as a squall line and associated thunderstorms and hail passed through and continued into the evening. Today will probably be the second day this year that Auckland has experienced 'Gale Force' winds (we normally only get about 3 days per year). Temps are around 17°C at 10am (NZST). SEVERE WEATHER WARNING. ISSUED BY MetService AT 7:46 am 13-Apr-2007
SEVERE SOUTHWESTERLY GALES IN THE SOUTHEAST AND EAST OF THE SOUTH ISLAND AND ALSO ABOUT AUCKLAND
MetService is maintaining a warning of severe southwest gales today in some exposed coastal parts of Southland, eastern Otago and Banks Peninsula with gusts to 120 km/h at times until late afternoon or evening, along with snow showers to fairly low levels. Also about Auckland and Coromandel Peninsula southwesterlies are expected to rise to gale this morning in exposed areas, possibly severe gale at times around the middle of the day with gusts to 120 km/h. Gusts of this strength have the potential to cause damage to trees and power lines, and make driving difficult for high sides vehicles and motorbikes.
AUCKLAND AND THE COROMANDEL PENINSULA
Southwesterlies rising to gale this morning and may rise to severe gale for a time between 10am and 6pm in some exposed areas with winds of 70 km/h gusting to 110 km/h. Winds should ease slowly this evening.
