Here comes the 9 O'Clock cloud band, right on time. Always happens in a weak SE general circulation. After a sunny early morning with light Westerlies, the wind switches around to the SE quarter around mid morning a bank of cloud that had been out to sea moves in.

It will most likely clear during the afternoon.

Looks like BOM agree with you. Some light showers reported at the airport now.

Here is the countryside near Windsor, NSW. After all the rain in November, it was all looking very nice and green and the dams were full.

That's how things look at the Eastern foot of the ranges. I understand that the other side has not fared so well and still needs rain.

Yep that green is not to be found west of the GDR. It is lush down there at the moment for sure.

I wonder what the difference is between 'Partly cloudy' and 'Partly sunny'? The former description appears in the latest Sydney forecast for Friday while the latter is applied to Monday. I always took partly could to mean something like the sun's disc obscured about 50% of the time or maybe 25% to 75%, corresponding to the definition of 'clear' and 'cloudy' days in climate stats (http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/cdo/about/definitionsother.shtml).

It's been a pleasant few days weatherwise, although there's not much warmth in the breeze. The BOM is still overestimating maxima, especially for inland suburbs, while OH struggles to get past 24. They seem to be underestimating the strength of the sea breeze in a weak, general circulation under a high pressure ridge.

Yes the weather has been fine and that sun is ferociously hot but the temperatures are too cool for my liking. I could be wrong but is it not the cool southern maritime air circulating around the weak high pressure in the Tasman? We cannot seem to escape the onslaught of cold air from the south at the moment. The front coming up on Thursday looks even worse.

I have been watching the East Australia current lately and that is getting choked off by a cold core eddy off Brisbane. SST are not able to climb into the low to mid twenties and so our afternoon sea gales are cooler.

Thats for sure!! Here's an indication of how dry its been on the western side of the Ranges this winter and spring...from the Bureau's Rainfall Anomalies Map:

The sea breeze is up and running on the coast, ten knots at OH. OH might struggle to 26 but would seem unlikely to make 29, even though there is a warmer air mass aloft (Mount Boyce already 23). The water inshore is probably colder than the 21 degrees recorded by MHL, making for a stronger, cooler sea breeze. Sydney Harbour can barely get past 20. Also, the very weak NW general circulation offers no resistance.

Well a freak heat flash spiked the OH temperature to 26.1 at 2:13PM. Phew, what a scorcher eh?

Seems a break in the clouds and a belated effort from the NW wind is pushing the western part of the basin onwards past the mid thirties now. Richmond on 35 in a moderate NW wind.

Meanwhile OH and West Channel Beacon ... pathetic!

Odd sort of Summer in Sydney so far. Sun lovers have nothing to complain about, with an average of over 11 hours a day after today, nearly 40% above average. In spite of this, days have been fairly mild, coming in about half a degree below average. Nights have been surprisingly cool, e.g. Bankstown is tracking about 3 degrees below average minima. The only rain has been a few millimetres in most places in the early hours of the 5th.

It looks like for all the world it should be storming just going on the look of the cloud, but there are no lightning returns at all in NSW atm. We might score a few drops or extreme virga later.

Fairly dark on the coast. Today was a good opportunity for Obs hill to crack the first 30 for summer, fell short at 29.8. Could be one of those cool summers where it struggles to reach it given we're about to enter an easterly troughy pattern.

Had a short, moderate shower here around 6:00 PM which has cooled things down a bit after hanging about in the low 30s since late morning. It's fairly gloomy now with a bit of mammatus about but there's nothing intersting on the radar.
