The 'look out the window test' contradicts today's Sydney forecast, given the clear sky and the fact we have already reached the forecast maximum of 28 by 8:30. Do we have another one of these 'secret' cold fronts on the way? The NZ Met shows one on the South Coast as at 7:00 this morning: http://www.metservice.com/national/maps-rain-radar/maps/tasman-sea-nz-colour-latest

P.S. BOM just upped the forecast max to 30 for Obs Hill. I note Campbelltown Max is 3 degrees less than Penrith, so a front must be expected to move up from the South. Forecast seems to be hinting at a chage this evening rather than earlier, though.

Edit Reason: BOM changed forecast

They might have had their Xmas party last night and came in late today.
Even the updated forecast is perplexing to me. It is meant to be a west to south west wind change but clearly it is a southerly on the south coast.
Isolated showers on the coastal fringe would suggest a southerly wind change and not a south west change. In fact, no mention of a change is in the forecast at all.
And why is there a different max temp forecast from west to east if there are meant to be offshore winds all day?
One more thing - Sydney is at its forecast maximum already.

Its not going to be your traditional southerly change as such, more like a gradual shift to the E/SE like the onset of our usual NE'er just from the E/SE instead. Temps look to be stalling now with Bellambi already starting to shift onshore.

Winds still moderate NW at Ulladulla. It doesn't make sense with the Bellambi temp/wind direction.

Kiama is the same, further south than Bellambi and winds still NW and 4C hotter.

Boiling here with a gusty hot NW er,some cumulus clouds around, they might develop into something later.

I think the Bellambi SE'er is a sea breeze. There does seem to be a Southerly between Moruya and Ulladulla, although it seems to have stalled. Temps in the W-NW stream seem to be rising quite slowly, e.g. Sydney Airport has risen only 2.5 degrees since 9:00. You would normally expect a steeper rise during the morning with clear skies and blanket W-NW'erlies. I had a look at the The 850 temperatures charts, which seem to show cooler air moving in gradually from the South.

SE'ly now working its way through the southern suburbs, e.g.:

http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstation/WXDailyHistory.asp?ID=INSWSYDN19 (Cronulla Beach)

http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstation/WXDailyHistory.asp?ID=INSWLOFT2 (Loftus Heights)

Sydney Airport should see a SE wind shift any minute. Boom, there it is!

Quite right Michael, this little southerly we have going now is one of those local shortwave changes/seabreezes, you'll note the wind has already backed around to the NE at Bellambi. But heck, it's wind from the east and it beats these desiccating hot westerlies.

The main southerly has just gone through Ulladulla but I'm guessing we'll just see a very gradual drop in temp/DPs as the milder air slowly moves north. Moruya Airport is still sporting a DP of 17C.

Blecch to those east winds! We get enough of them throughout summer.

Some impressive differences.
Westerly wind at Fort Denison and West Channel Beacon gusting over 50km\h.
A SSE wind at Sydney Airport gusting over 50km\h.

The wind has just swung to the SE in the CBD as I type damn it.

You can see that SSE nicely on the doppler.
No such thing as a seabreeze here, just gusty norwesters atm, sky is starting to fill up with Cu.
I wonder how far up that southerly will go?

Westerly has pushed through again at Bellambi, so it will be one of those tussles more common in spring. Though the hottest of the air seems to have passed now as temps are levelling or even dropping in places that still have the westerly e.g. Camden.

If we had westerlies all summer long Sydney as we know it probably wouldn't exist since the climate would be hot semi-arid similar to Bourke.

I see the Terry Hills radar is picking up those small cells off the Central Coast & Newy better than the Newcastle radar!!

Still very gusty Westerlies at Macquarie Park and 34 degrees. That SE change didn't make it very far inland, in fact judging by the flags on the Harbour Bridge it barely made it that far. OH hasn't dropped below 30. Now the NW'ers look to be reasserting themselves:

http://www.sydney-webcam.com/index.php?nav=cam3

(Flags must be at half mast for Nelson Mandela - good too see).

Were it not for the recent rains, I think that today would have been a day of serious fire danger.

Seems to be a bit of cumulus development to the North.
