Just getting the big fat raindrops here. We miss out everytime. I even taunted Huey, raced around filling buckets incase we lost power. Not ready to give up yet though.

Well no, I wouldn't f I were you, whopping tall cloud directly West of us now, has blocked out the sun and is rumbling as it builds up. Only just showing on the radar at the moment. although I fear it may go more Proston way as well.

Check it out on the webcam

The clouds got lumpy just to the east of us. We are outside Murgon on Goomeri side, and always the bridesmaid. Been here about 7 weeks now and only 1 good heavy shower and a whole day of follow up drizzle Kazz63.
Wrong side of the highway, but not giving up.

Just heard the craziest thunder sound! It sounded like an explosion going off, terrified me, the dogs went off. Never heard anything like it before it happened at 10.01PM, just wow! Jumped me out of my chair lol

Yeah I just noticed big lightning flashes occurring every second when I went outside, turns out more storms are forming, this time near the coast. Wasn't expecting that

Your not wrong about it trying hard Mega - the NE-SE boundary between Gympie and Maryborough was lined with convection for hours and hours and at many times there were pre-Cb structures and updrafts that would start to precip but then flake out. What started out as a planned short chase (3-4 hour round trip) ended up being a 10 hour round trip and a great many km's. I stuck with the convection closer to the coast for as long as I could but it just kept taking me further north and west, it got to the point where I was either going to have to cut my losses and head home or go the hole hog and head for the supercell that had developed earlier near Kingaroy. Even if the supercell died I figured I had a good chance of more storms developing around Gayndah anyway. I ended up east of Gayndah waiting for it to push further north towards an E-W stretch of highway there, thinking the highway south was going to be too far east of the main udpraft area and just take me into it's core (but for 30-40 minutes I could see clear and nicely sculptured supercell structure on the horizon), after a while I got impatient and jetted south of the highway - turns out I had a great view from the highway. Where I was in the first photo below, I was standing in 2-3cm hail falling out of the anvil. That soon became a barrage of small hail with the odd large donk - and I was still some ways north of the main visible rain curtain - so I jetted north again pretty quickly. The first 6 photos below are taken over period of about 30 minutes ... of course after a great many hours of carving up the landscape the storm weakens as soon as I start chasing it smile I think probably another storm that developed to it's north upset it a bit, although considering the time of the day maybe it was just the cooling surface temps. I have to say too, this storm was HUGE - I mean vertically. I really couldn't accurately estimate the cloud tops as I just don't get to stand in front of something that tall all that often, not while still being able to see the structure clearly at least. Using past storms that I've seen where the height has been verified by someone with access to 3D radar and/or hearing height estimates from people that have been doing them for decades, I'd have to put the tops on this storm in the 50-55k range. In this series of photos it was really only that tall in the first couple, it quickly lost a lot of it's height while I was photographing it.

Oh, and it was nice to meet up with Michael Thompson, Michael Keene and Steve Feral on the side of the road north of Ban Ban Springs! They were on this storm from it's initiation near Kingaroy, I saw some photos on the back of a DSLR of the structure further south... incredible! Hopefully they post a couple of photos in here at some point. I was quietly dreading the 3 hour drive back home to Brisbane... it was nothing compared to their drive home! (southern NSW)

And then after driving back towards Brisbane, looking back towards the north at the storms that developed ahead of the main supercell, looking nice in the setting sun.

Great shots Ben, so that was what was above us yesterday huh? I thought the webcam shots were impressive, standing outside looking at it was a bit more impressive but seeing your pics is even more impressive.

Cheers guys. Yes I've put 15 000km on my car in the last 6-7 weeks and I don't do anywhere near the amount of chasing that others do, mind you at least half of those km's were big work trips where I could tie storm chasing in on the way to or from a location. But yeah the actual cost of storm chasing is massive if you take everything into consideration - fuel, running costs.

A couple of shots from the cell that moved through Hervey Bay on the 29th. Probably the best thunderstorm I've ever witnessed

A heap more high res photos I took that night are on my flickr here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/113074372@N04/

The local newspaper emailed me after I posted the first photo on their facebook page. It ended up getting published in today's newspaper on page 2! (included)

I read the article as well as admiring your photos. Headline says:
"Dry now, flood coming".

Article says "BOM climate scientist Tamika Tihema said the initial rain outlook suggested there would not be much rain for January and February"....

Anyone else thinking *facepalm*?
