Ah the good old high pressure system causing misery on the east coast yet again, funny though you google high pressure "a high pressure causes mainly settled weather and clear skies" - they for got to add "with the exception of the east coast of Australia". I'm surprised they haven't produced a barometer for eastern australia, where the rain icon is under "high" lol

Brace yourself for not only having to take shelter from the extreme temperatures day and night not just for your comfort but also the good of your health, but also the news media constantly including images and footage of silly little children swimming in pools and on beaches :sigh: nothing ever changes (apart from slightly more awareness of the dangers of heatwaves)

Ah summer. "Gotta love it" ay?

There are people in Sydney's Eastern suburbs who never go West of Moore Park. They won't experience anything higher than about 27 in the coming week. I am skeptical about forecasts of 29 as the sea breeze will be strong. No worries about heat there, although nights will be warm (20-21) and it will be humid and windy by day.

The 'middle' suburbs (e.g Parramatta) will have 6 out 7 days in the low 30s with high humidity. Penrith will have 7 consecutive days of 30+, mostly mid to high 30s, again with high humidity.

And Canberra? Seven days where it spikes in the mid to high 30s in the afternoon, low humidity and dropping back to the low to mid teens at night. A doddle.

Some pretty intense thunderstorms showing up on the Canberra radar atm! My view looking northwest from Merimbula shows some MASSIVE cumulonimbus clouds exploding over the Southern Tablelands, particularly around Cooma!! smile

I noticed a little pulse storm go up to my west around Bungonia. 2 weeks ago I would've called this storm half decent looking, however after seeing the 50000ft beasts in Kingeroy- Gayndah last week I will now happily call this one a pimple. The weak storm only lasted 40 minutes, choking on its own rainfall, and heavily reliant on sunshine. After such a horrendous season, it was a shock to see a visible cell from Nowra, even if it was 80 kms away...

Whilst the upcoming week still looks bleak for storms, it is nice to get a break from the southern ocean cold fronts. Here in Nowra we'll get a summery week from Tuesday onwards,we are far enough inland to get some mid 30's, but close enough to the coast to get high dew points. Its the sort of weather I quite like! The northeasterly airstream pushes well inland, so it appears there's no threat of a 40c for us

I was out and about today, but couldn't take my eyes off the sky, there was so much happening. Really good-looking dirty messy dark and yellow-veiled Cu to the SW quite early, before midday. Then drama in the south. Then it all moved to the east. Then later in the day, out at Costco where you can see the sky for miles (except to the East) it looked like things were going on in every quadrant, except right over the eastern ACT.

Didn't get to the 30 forecast, but meanwhile the forecast has upped all the temperatures, except Wednesday's 39 is still there... I think they're nervous about putting a 40c in there until they're positive.

I hope this instability hangs around though... stinking hot days with decent storms would be a nice reward. Regardless, I'm heading for the coast as soon as my car's serviced on Monday.

Does anyone have a read on how long the upper 30s are going to go for?

It was Windellama and a very small but intense storm. Just got home from a small fire started by a CG hitting a tree in Windellama.
Some parts got nothing whilst others had 25mm.

There'll be some happy people it rained but not many people got it.

Cheers
Mick

Gradual progression next week from high 20's to 35 and 36 by the end of the week in the Lower Hunter. Minimal rain after Monday as well.
Our highest reading so far for 2014 has only been 37, but can't see us being spared high 30's for the whole of January.
Was down in Griffith during the week, and was pleasantly surprised by the lack of heat - which will be 43C there by the end of next week, and 4 days in a row over 40C - hell!

After seeing little of the sun since Monday it's a clear blue sky with light winds.

Sea temps off Sydney now 23.5. That will increase the humidity and increase coastal temps if maintained: http://new.mhl.nsw.gov.au/data/realtime/sst/Sydney

Heading up to Byron Bay for a week, this is my third time up there every January and I seem to arrive when the weather seems to be a bore. Would've loved to have experienced some action up there but I suppose the sun will do.

Can see some convective towers to the west of Lake Macquarie but forecasts says that won't amount to much.

Every day, another forecast day is revealed to us. We now have four days in the upper 30s next week. Sun-Mon is mid 30s, then we have 37, 39, 38 and 38. With mention of possible showers for Thurs and Fri, although showers seem to disappear from the forecast the closer we get to the day.

It sure heated up fast this morning, that sun is motivated.

The forecasts for Wollongong and Ulladulla (I use both to gauge our coast weaher) are much more benign, mid to upper 20s for the next week.

A veil of high cloud is spoiling the sunshine here in Merimbula, but it should be mostly sunny as the forecast says (top of 28C, currently nearly 24C) aside from afternoon and evening showers as a weak cool change brushes by. Tomorrow will only be slightly cooler, 25C at this stage smile

Oddly enough, there is almost no wind outside! Very strange, but I suspect it'll get windy as usual as the day progresses...

I can see a bit of convection starting to bubble to the west (somewhere near Bombala or in that general direction). The forecast for the Snowy Mountains/Southern Tablelands area only calls for afternoon showers but maybe a thunderstorm or two will develop as well? smile

It didn't feel any warmer this morning in the water at Bilgola; still just on the coolish side of tepid. The bouy must be far enough out to catch the warmer current http://oceancurrent.imos.org.au/SNSW/latest.html . Really hoping that current gets its act together and pushes some 25+ water onto the beach.

Temps and DPs really pushing up around the basin now that the southern maritime influence is gone.

I think it's more likely that the persistent NEer we are due to get next week cools the water down (due to that whole pushing surface water left/upwelling thing). Hopefully that doesn't happen!

Niece just picked up a Nautilus from Foster Beach - assume that it drifted from the Great Barrier Reef on a (very) warm current. Seems early... wonder what effect that will have on weather.

Another great day here in Merimbula with a top of 27.5C, still about 22C out there. It was quite humid, although the breeze brought some welcome relief. It was also partly cloudy and unstable-looking for much of the time, but no showers or thunderstorms developed unfortunately. The radar showed some activity about the Southern Tablelands this arvo, including a brief storm that brought about 7mm of rain to Bombala. smile

A beautiful day in Newcastle and Port Stephens. Here is the view looking towards the heads of Port Stephens from Gan Gan lookout near Nelson Bay this afternoon.

Nelson Bay from Gan Gan lookout by SteveSeven77, on Flickr

About 26-27 degrees on the coast and 30-32 inland. Sea breezes not sea gales, clear blue sky with a bit of cumulus to the West. Beautiful.
