Thank you Eddy.

Gan Gan is amazing. I never knew there was such a beautiful place just 3 hours drive away. My only prior experience of Port Stephens was being stuck in traffic on the Pacific Highway at Karuah while heading for points further North.

Yeah don't miss those days stuck in holiday traffic. The headland on the the left is Yacaaba Headland and Tomaree on the south side of the port, which all give great panoramic views just like Gan Gan.

A week of 40's and above. Will be happy to be inside at work in the aircon. We may break our record of 40+ temps this week.

That is such an amazing view!! I'll have to make note of Gan Gan, as well as the rest of the Newcastle/Port Stephens area in general! There's so much of New South Wales that I'm aching to see, including the coastline from Palm Beach in Sydney's Northern Beaches to Tweed Heads on the Queensland border! smile

I really thought we were going to get a storm this arvo. The cloud built up, starting in the SW, and piled across the entire sky. Low, fat and heavy. The WS console showed 34c before the sun got blotted out, but Canberra's obs say 32c.

but nothing happened. I then feared as the evening closed in that with NO wind, not a whisper, we were in for a still hot night. But then a southerly began to blow, and turned into quite a sprightly SE. It's 20c outside now, which will do nicely.

All mention of showers is now out of the forecast though. Waiting to peek beyond Friday to see if the heat ends or not, I think not.

You have a great way with words Ant, I saw those thick, black clouds pass by too. I said when I was out walking we might get something but Gaye replied back "it will pass over with no rain" she was right! I think by next Sunday the heatwave will be over though, watch out for early Feb though that can be quite hot too.
The garden here badly need a drink despite my pathetic efforts at watering, water tanks are nearly dry I guess that's to be expected though. I have the option of scheme water @ I think $2.43 a kilolitre if I run out but not keen on that.
Stay cool (if that's what you like)

Came back from Kippax yesterday at 5:15 and had spots of rain on the windscreen, that's all, no need for wipers. If I had not been driving I would not have noticed, very frustrating. bucketingdown does some long range work, will have to check on any updates.

Yet another stunningly beautiful summer's morning here in Merimbula! Not a cloud in the sky, a light cooling onshore breeze, warm sunshine! Currently about 22°C with a forecast top of 25°C smile

I was up around 6.30am to close curtains etc, and it was 18c then. Not for long though! Coast climate sounds much more attractive, that's for sure. It's just hit 30.6c outside, and oddly the wind is still coming from the NE (yesterday was all the predictable NW until the change came through).

Not a cloud in the sky, which is that dirty, washed-out looking thing you get when it's blazing hot.

I'm going to start gathering my stuff for the coast... board shorts, crocs and t-shirts.

Yes. hot here. I seen a small tower out to the NW a while ago, but it looks to be gone now,light NE wind it is cutting the heat back a little,better than a hot NW wind.

Just hit 34.5c here, but Canberra says it's 35.5, yuck. keep getting quite lively SE/S gusts, but they're not lowering the temperature, yet.

Canberra radar shows an interesting green line to the east: http://www.weatherzone.com.au/radar/act/canberra/128km
and I reckon that's some kind of change in the air that is due to arrive later, bringing cooler (temporary) air. There's nothing actually over there, I can see it! Nothing but dirty-looking air.

Edit: darn it! Now my console say's it's 35.6c. Temperature's making a practise run for next week.

The BOM said we would "only" be getting 34°C but we have already reached 37°C, I dread to think that any of the many 39°Cs would be exceeded

This is an odd one.

Wind is now 180° 6kts and temperature is 36° at AP, work that one out.
Braidwood is 24°, so relief is coming.

37.4C top here today bit surprising that BOM got it wrong by a few degrees... sea breeze would be welcome now.

Which City had the more comfortable weather today - Sydney or Canberra?

Well, there's no correct answer, but here are some numbers:

* Sydney (Min / Max / Average / 3:00PM humidity): 21, 29, 25, 61%

* Canberra (Min / Max / Average / 3:00PM humidity): 13, 37, 25, 14%

Arguably that's equal on temperatures alone, with Sydney winning (or losing) on humidity.

If I had been required to do physical work today, I would have been sweating like the proverbial pig all day in Sydney but apart from a few hours in the afternoon in Canberra (when a siesta might have been in order) I would have found Canberra fairly comfortable.

It's now quite overcast here but still warm and humid. The satellite photo shows the dreaded marine layer growing like a fungus, starting as a blob just North of Nowra and spreading North, South and West. The satellite (visible) shows an odd ribbon of cloud extending from about the Northern end of the marine layer hundreds of kilometres out to sea, moving North. There's too much low cloud to see anything here but it would be interesting to see what it is - some sort of roll cloud at the head of a SE change?

I'd argue that Sydney would be better than Canberra... but that's from the perspective of someone who lives in a bushfire-prone area. The events of Black Saturday 2009 back in Victoria have, at least mentally, caused me to prefer stifling humidity over scorching heat with low dew points. Sounds crazy but it's true... even my fiancee from steamy Fiji thinks I'm crazy but Sydney (or Far North Queensland or Fiji even) in high summer sounds much better than being in Canberra (or Corryong or even back home in Melbourne). At least the high humidity lowers the threat of bushfires. And if it needs to be extremely hot, say 38°C, then I'd prefer it to be sultry with showers and the risk of potentially severe thunderstorms. smile
