well they're having one in Canberra today, and I bet there's not a drop! (cricket match, that is).

It's surprisingly warm... hot really... on the coast today. I hoped for a nice cooler air through the car windows as I came down off the hinterland, but it didn't happen. Humid, and hot. 30c at our house (and we used to be able to see the sea but the trees grew up) although I suspect a bit of heat reflection off the deck... 28c is probably closer to the mark. Blustery NE wind going (and still going) but not cool at all.

some interesting info in this thread in the previous posts too.

Enjoy your time on the coast Ant! Hope it's a nice change from the dry heat and parched vegetation up around Canberra! smile

My family and I took a day trip north up the Princes Highway to Central Tilba (at the foot of Gulaga aka Mount Dromedary) and then back south to Merimbula through Bermagui, Tathra, and Tura Beach. Perfect day weatherwise, nice and hot and humid with temperatures around 30C, hazy, hardly a cloud in the sky, plentiful sunshine, and quite blustery too with that northeasterly wind you mentioned Ant smile

Hopefully we'll see some shower and thunderstorm action tomorrow! wink

It's really dry here, too, unusually. And now there's a giant storm off this bit of coast according to the radar, but you'd never know it here.

Glad you mentioned the storm Ant! Wasn't even aware of it until I read your post, unfortunately no lightning showing up on the Weatherzone radar at the last check. The storm stretches offshore from just east/northeast of Merimbula north to near Point Perpendicular (near Ulladulla) smile

Those are false echoes being picked up off the South Coast (a distinct lack of cloud on the satellite in the area where the echoes are being picked up helps to confirm that they are false echoes). So, no storms or rain offshore. smile

Thanks for clarifying that Seabreeze. Yep, no storms offshore from here I'm afraid, as shown on satellite and the lightning tracker, just a mild, humid evening with moonlit low-level clouds drifting overhead from.the northeast...

AH GREAT..... the BOM has upgraded us to 40C for today, why has Canberra not had a single 40C day between 1973 and 1998 and now it's an annual occurrence!!!!

The Greens continue to blame Abbott?? Why? Because he's repealing the Carbon Tax while China, the US and India domate the world's carbon emissions? And the Greenies still blame Australia simply on the basis of "per capita"? Sorry you Greenie idiots, but it's the total output, not the output per head, that matters.

Ye gods, I didn't think false echoes could have red cores! I'm used to the green rubbish cluttering up the view, but this looked like a bona-fide monster. Although I'd been walking along the beach at sunset, and didn't notice any development out to sea, just a lot of dirty sea-air.

Maybe the radar's bored, with the lack of useful action for it to detect.

Humidity's down this morning, yay, with a nice-feeling northerly moving the trees and cooling the cicadas.

Word of the heatwave re-asserting itself next week seems to be reflected in Tuesday's return to 35c in the ACT Region. There's mention of showers at the cool-down Saturday night and the next days though.

Tuesday's heat looks like it will be a one day affair with another change moving through after that. All the models want to push the hot air north most of next week- over Alice Springs and inland QLD. No tropical systems moving south though so the potential for extreme heat remains.

Cloudless deep blue skies, gentle breezes and cicadas in Sydney this morning, about 26 degrees.

Another magnificent, hot summer's day here on the NSW South Coast. Sunny, somewhat hazy, and humid as well, with a fresh northeast/northerly wind. Currently about 28C here in Merimbula with a forecast high of 30C with possible showers later, hopefully a thunderstorm or two as well. smile

There was quite a beautiful fog/mist and patches of low cloud around the area at sunrise, mainly over the hills to the north and around the airport and lake and hills to the west. Plus there was a heavy dew. It must've been very humid last night. smile

Only a few fair-weather cumulus around the immediate area at present (more so to the west but none over the town) but through the haze I can also see some impressive cumulus congestus towers erupting over the Southern Tablelands, especially towards the north/northwest! So no doubt that area is likely to be in for some more summer shower and thunderstorm action later!! smile

Was howling yesterday evening in Newcastle, gusts to 50kmh I would say.

Nobbys observations say it's hitting 40km/h already.

Quite a strong NE wind here (south of Jervis Bay) making the beach unpleasant, about 30c outside and that damn humidity is back. Interesting to hear it's a feature down Merimbula way too, so it's not just me. Looks like you can maybe see the ST Storm Factory gearing up? which is good.

No cicadas are dead here! They're deafening.

very good news that the heatwave might be gathering its skirts and heading north next week. That's a relief.

No cicadas here just a lot of magpies hiding in the shade gasping for air, poor things.
Temperature has just gone past 40C, 40.1C in my backyard so BOM was on the money again, I think the airport has just nudged 40C as well.
No signs of storms yet either.

Ant I think I would like 30C and a humid NE wind after the bone dry hot winds we have here at the moment.

Some solid looking cells going up to the E and SW of Canberra at the moment. Could be a few showers or thunderstorms around the ACT this evening...

Hope so bogong, but they could be artifacts, the only system I can see is east of Batemans Bay, may similar to yesterday with nothing there.
I read 42, Braidwood is 37 with a 22km/hr SE.
