1.2mm in a fairly short shower, hopefully we will get some more, plenty of rumbles around...

(Roger - what is your location - just general terms, e.g. South Coast, Newcastle, etc.)

I just thought I'd do a quick updated of Sydney's maxima for today. I think late spikes are unlikely:

Code:
* Belambi (0 km inland):     24.0
* Sydney OH (6 km):          28.7
* Sydney Airport (6 km):     31.8
* Parramatta (25 km):        36.2 (3:00 PM temp)
* Penrith (50 km):           40.8

Parramatta may have got a bit warmer but not by much I expect. Bankstown and Holsworthy, a similar distance inland, maxed out at 35-36.

There are no coastal stations in Sydney providing on-line temps, but Norah Head and Newcastle Nobby's maxed out at 24.8 and 25.0, so Sydney beaches and headlands were probably maxed at 24-25.

50 kilometers (or even 25 or 6) makes a big difference.

Good thing I went to the beach when I did. The sun was shining brightly a couple of hours ago in spite of the smoke haze. Now, the western and northwest horizon is very dark, could get very stormy here in Merimbula in about 2-3 hours or so smile

Temperature has dropped from 40.5C earlier in the day to 22.9C and we've had 4.2mm and it's very welcome on the parched ground!

Alas the storms weakened yet again before they reached me, but thankfully they helped spice up the sunset here in Merimbula, along with more smoke from all the bushfires that have broken out across Southeast NSW/ACT and neighbouring Gippsland and Northeast Victoria.

Sadly I leave Merimbula tomorrow for Canberra, but hopefully I'll have a much better chance of getting underneath a thunderstorm while in the Capital before returning to Corryong on Monday and then back home to Melbourne later next week,

Got quite the lightshow from Windellama onwards, and heavy rain between Tarago and Bungendore. It was nicely cool around Tarago too, but 23c at home (21c now). And not a drop here. Lots of bark and stuff on the road though, must have been some good squally things at some point.

33c now forecast for tomorrow, curses! But it also looks like being very unsettled and possibly quite good.

A coolish 17C this morning here in Merimbula, but partly cloudy (unstable-looking again) and with a horrid smoke haze (you can really smell it this morning). frown

Hope to finally be able to get beneath a decent thunderstorm or two later today in Canberra! smile

Lovely cool SE air this morning, but that sun, sigh. Yuck. Lot of smoke haze making the light a tired old yellow, not too smelly, and lots of those crisped black leaves lying around. Garden and "lawns" are down for the count, despite increased irrigation to them. The tub of water I leave out for wild animals that only needs a bit of a top-up each week is bone dry.

Temperature is climbing fast, 24c. Got excited by the radar view showing great colours to my NE, but then realised I couldn't see any cloudage there, and would be able to if epic storms were really happening. Forecast says we can hope for some storm-like happenings today though. Crossing everything. and hoping the forecast doesn't up tomorrow's heavenly 25c.

Re the spectacular returns to your NE. I was looking at the BOM 512km composites last night and it looked like there was an almighty storm in the Lower Hunter/Great Lakes but Williamstown was showing nothing. I went looking further and I think Terry Hills was the culprit. It was showing what I interpreted as a band of heavy scatter to the north.

I'd be interested if anyone here can confirm or report whether there was rain or storms in the Hunter/Central Coast last night.

Same sort of scatter happening on the Canberra radar now.

Strong tropospheric (anomalous) propagation still occurring across E NSW, Canberra FM radio stations strong into Sydney this morning which explains the strong radar returns in that direction.

Last night propagation was strong to the north (Coffs Harbour FM radio received) which explains the strong returns from the Barrington Tops area shown on Terrey Hills.

Some good Cu development to the SE of the ACT.

Given the current behaviour of the radars, it is going to be be difficult to differentiate the early stages of any showers from the scatter.

A much more pleasant day today - but still looking forward to the cooler temps arriving later this afternoon.

Interesting, reminds me of years ago at this time of the year picking up weak VHF television signals from NZ. How did I know ? It was a Gillette razor commercial with strong Kiwi accents.

dlcat1,I'd be interested if anyone here can confirm or report whether there was rain or storms in the Hunter/Central Coast last night.Not a thing,looked good on the radar,but clear blue sky's up here,I wish it was a huge storm system, looking at the goods on the radar,we would have had some flooding around.I have seen this false echo a few times this week,just north of the hunter.

Yeah, I was getting excited for you too smile

January, probably 2006, I was up at Broken Cart at the bottom of a valley midway between Brindabella and Tumut and Long Plain and come nightfall was able to pick up Canberra FM radio stations perfectly on a small MP3 player. Suprised me as at the time I thought FM was purely line of sight, and I had three mountain ranges between me and the transmitter.
