I hate this hot dry weather as well Stormy3, the beach isn't even that much fun with the noreast gale in the arvo. Weather around this part of the country has been so boring for the last couple of months. No storm action what so ever and looking to stay that way for a while.

End of rant!

Well today is Wombat Day (Feb 2). Did anyone let a wombat out of their burrow to determine if there will be an early autumn? grin

There's a few wombats around here that escape their burrow occasionally but I don't think they'll give us any indication of an early autumn.
The weather is certainly Groundhog day atm.

Reminds me of this exchange from "Good Morning Vietnam":

First of all, don't make fun of the weather here, and don't say the weather is the same all the time here, because it's not. In fact, it's two degrees cooler today than yesterday.

Two degrees colder? [gasps]

I don't think we'll have an early Autumn. Long term GFS seems to me to be repeating the same pattern through it's cycles. At some point the slight lengthening of nights will start to make a small impact. At least if we get cooler nights or a good drop of rain (can't see that anytime soon!!) it will be better.

We have several relatively cooler nights and days this week (not today) but back into heat by Saturday.

I don't remember seeing that dreaded red line over this part of the country SO PERSISTENTLY in my days of model watching. At least last night cooled off a bit but tonight will be too warm. House will stay hot.

From the BoM's summary page for Sydney last month (January 2014).
"No thunderstorms were reported at the airport, the first time since January 2007 (average 3 storms)."

Clearly we used up our meagre storm rations for the whole season in November last year.

Looks like Bathurst broke a 46 year old record for heat in January. Long term average 28.3, actual in Jan 31.9 giving a 3.6 degree over run.

We didn't break the individual day max of 40.2 but the sheer number of days above 30 and 35 were much greater than usual. In fact only 9 days under 30 degrees.

We usually average 2 days over 35, we had at least 10.

We had a lack of rain and cooler days to give respite. The hot temps ok if you get a break from them.

Yep, a long hot summer anywhere west of the Divide, not so much on the coast but we've still had long runs of sunny warm conditions (so the ice cream vendors won't be too displeased).

00z GFS shows some hope of a tropical moisture incursion at the end of its run, it will probably vanish though. But Ken Kato was flirting with some rain around that time for South-East Queensland at least.

Still dry as at the moment though with 13C dewpoints despite the deep and strong NE'ly.

Indeed. November has pretty much been it this season! So far the airport has recorded 7 thunder days since September (5 in November), with the average 15 until the end of January.

A very warm night here last night (comparatively for us) at around 18 or 19. Tonight should be 10'ish so a whole lot nicer indeed. smile smile Might finally cool the house down for a couple of nights.

A bit humid here (vs recent times) this morning. At least the temp should be quite a bit lower, sad when a max 1 degree above average is considered "cool" instead of "warm".

Can't see any rain in this cloud for us, maybe a spit or two, no more.

It's cooled right off here too. It started out like every day for the past week - a warm night followed by a sunny morning, reaching 25 by about 9:00. But then instead of the Sea Gales, we got cloud closing in from the South. It started to cool off from around 10:00, dropping about 4 degrees since then.

We now have a few light showers about from unbroken overcast, the temperature 20 point something. What I call a cool day for this time of year.

The BOM's temperature forecast for Sydney is not much use on a day like today. They should have said something like 'cool change around mid morning with temps dropping to about 20-21 for the rest of the day'.

Interesting to note that the change has been charted by the NZ Met, shown near Sydney and across the Central Tablelands at 11:00 AEDT. Why doesn't the BOM do this, given their critical impact on the weather, especially in coastal areas.

http://www.metservice.com/national/maps-rain-radar/maps/tasman-sea-nz-colour-latest

P.S Sydney Airport has dropped nearly 7 degrees from a 9:40 am max. Penrith, Richmond and Terry Hills have dropped 5 to 6 degrees, so it's a significant cool change.

You're right there. The BOM's forecast might make one believe it will be a 25 degree muggy but showery day. Quite different to the now almost chilly (for summer) conditions at present.

No storm here. Just that maritime fungus casting its pall over the coast. For ice cream vendors a grade 3 alert is in effect on the Enhanced Tourist Industry Cashflow scale.

When you compare the BoM chart and the NZ Met chart for 11am EDST it is clear the shape is the same. BoM call it a trough. But, I too, much prefer the NZ Met version showing it as a cold front. Given the change in weather with the temperature drop and so on I cannot understand why you wouldn't put a cold front on the chart.

Agree - NZ chart is more expressive with just a glance

Temp stabilised here at around 25, hopefully it will hold at that and reduce after about 3 o'clock.
