Hello UK Steve. I note that those May averages are not too different from what would be typical of the Sydney area (away from the coast or CBD) in mid-winter (July), except that the sunniest day would be about 10 hours. Also, max temps under 10deg are uncommon - the lowest would be around 11-12. Your readings for June 3 (range 7 to 10) would be an exceptionally cold winters day in the Sydney area.

I'd probably find a Sydney winter to be pleasantly mild although I would miss the chance of snow. Sydney's winter daylight hours would be a plus though.

20.0mm yesterday has pushed the monthly total up to 98.0mm. A total well in excess of 100mm is likely this month.

There's been a notable lack of sunshine this month. In the first 15 days of June we have had just 33.9 hours of sunshine. That's even less than the 51.6 hours of sunshine we had in the first half of January, which is an incredible statistic given the vast difference in daylight hours between the two months.

The first 15 days of June actually recorded fewer sunshine hours than the first half of every month in 2012.

Monday 11th - Very cool, wet dull and gloomy. Max 12ºC, Min 10ºC.

Tuesday 12th - Overcast and chilly. Max 13ºC, Min 9ºC.

Wednesday 13th - Slightly warmer, some sunny periods. Max 16ºC, Min 8ºC.

Thursday 14th - Dry for most of the day and not feeling too bad in the sunshine. Wet weather moved in during the evening. Max 17ºC, Min 5ºC.

Friday 15th - Wet overnight with further short bursts of heavy rain during the day. Max 17ºC, Min 10ºC.

Saturday 16th - Another dull and gloomy day with frequent rain showers. Max 15ºC, Min 11ºC.

Sunday 17th - Dull and overcast. Max 17ºC, Min 11ºC.

Yet another poor week with overcast skies, cool temps and frequent rain. Nothing summerlike at all, very boring. For the first time since 1991, we have gone 18 days in June without reaching 20ºC.

A slightly better week in store this week. Less rain and potentially a day above 20ºC on Wednesday. Still looking unsettled overall for the rest of June.

We finally reached 20ºC for the first time this month with a maximum of 21ºC this afternoon. Unfortunately, it's back to normal over the next few days with more rain and cool temperatures.

Tomorrow is the summer solstice. Sunrise will be at 4:44am and sunset at 9:33pm. Twilight begins at 3:54am and ends at 10:23pm.

Looks like an incredibly wet time coming up in the UK - likely to be some flooding over the next few days. Amazing that for mid winter here we are still way warmer than you guys so far this June!

We have already had more than 100mm for June so far, with more on the way. The sunshine total for June up to the 20th is just 54.8 hours. That's even less than the 64.7 hours of sunshine in the first 20 days of January.

January had 92.6 sunshine hours and it's possible that June will not beat that total.

Hello Steve:

Firstly, Many Thanks for those Kind July 4th wishes.

On my thread, you remarked about the Record-Breaking heat in Little Rock--the capital of Arkansas--on Monday.

Officially, the temperature topped out at 105F at the North Little Rock WFO (Daily Record, broke 101F in 1998) and also topped out at 105F at Little Rock's Adams Field (Airport) (Daily Record, broke 101F in 1998).

Both the above readings TIE the Record High Maximum for Little Rock in June (Tied 105F on June 20, 1936 & June 29, 1988). The 107F you saw was the Maximum recorded at the Little Rock Air Force Base (which is in Jacksonville), (Daily Record, broke 103F in 1988).

You also asked if Mena ever had a 100F Maximum on July 4th (Independence Day). The answer is no; according to weather.com, Mena's Highest July 4th Maximum is 99F, recorded in 1964.

A dry Pacific cold front came through on Tuesday and gave us some slightly cooler air, the Maximum here Tuesday was only 98F, but the Minimum this (Wednesday) morning fell all the way down to 61F. More HOT & DRY weather expected here for the near future---hope this warmth can translate into your area.

Kind Wishes & Take Care~~~Wet Snow

It was spectacular here. We had about 20 minutes of really torrential rain, thunder and constant cloud lightning. Some shops in Birmingham city centre were flooded and there were sandbags near a few shop entrances this afternoon.

There's a small slope near my house and it turned into a river with part of my garden looking like a lake. No water got into my house fortunately.

The nearby weather station at Coleshill recorded 29.6mm today. That takes the monthly total to an amazing 150.0mm. Skies cleared and it turned very warm and humid. Max was 25ºC with a dewpoint of 21ºC.

Here's the news report from the Birmingham mail.

Steve:

Looks like some really wild weather you've been having.

WoW! A monthly raintotal of 150.0mm=5.90"--that's more rain than we've had here since April 4th.
Another dry and HOT day today (Thur., a Daily-Record Tying Maximum of 100F), the next mention of rain in our local forecast is a chance of rain on July 7th. I'd Gladly trade you some of our Warmth for some of your Rainfall.

Kind Wishes & Take Care~~~Wet Snow
P.S. Still a warm 98F here at 5:47PM.

June 2012 weather stats

Average mean: 13.3ºC
Average max: 17.2ºC
Average min: 9.4ºC
Highest max: 24.7ºC (28th)
Highest min: 15.6ºC (27th)
Lowest max: 10.3ºC (3rd)
Lowest min: 4.7ºC (10th)
Rainfall: 154.0mm
Rain days: 22
Wettest day: 32.0mm (3rd)
Sunshine: 89.1 Hours
Daily average: 2.97 Hours
Sunniest day: 8.4 Hours (19th)

An absolutely awful month. It ranks right up there with some of the other abysmal summer months we've had in the past. No settled period of weather during the entire month (the longest dry period was 2 days). Shocking sunshine totals as well, with June actually recording less sunshine than January for likely the first time ever. Half of the days were almost totally overcast. The only highlight was last Thursday's spectacular storm, which is probably the most intense storm I've ever seen in the UK.

I've decided to change the way I post my weather reports. There isn't much point in doing daily summaries as most days there isn't much weather of note happening. From now on, I'll post the weekly stats for the nearby met office station at Coleshill (approx 10km from Birmingham city centre) along with details of any interesting weather events that happen.

Monday 25th: Max 20.7ºC, Min 9.3ºC, Rain 0.2mm, Sun 4.9 Hours

Tuesday 26th: Max 19.7ºC, Min 12.4ºC, Rain Trace, Sun 1.3 Hours

Wednesday 27th: Max 23.2ºC, Min 15.6ºC, Rain Trace, Sun 5.9 Hours

Thursday 28th: Max 24.7ºC, Min 13.6ºC, Rain 29.6mm, Sun 6.0 Hours

Friday 29th: Max 19.4ºC, Min 12.8ºC, Rain 0.2mm, Sun 3.0 Hours

Saturday 30th: Max 19.4ºC, Min 11.9ºC, Rain 3.8mm, Sun 5.5 Hours

Sunday 1st: Max 18.3ºC, Min 8.4ºC, Rain Trace, Sun 8.0 Hours

Data from ogimet.com

A spectacular storm on Thursday (see above post for info), otherwise the coolish and unsettled theme of the summer continued. Thursday afternoon was actually quite pleasant once the rain moved away and skies cleared.

Forecast for upcoming week - Cool and unsettled, mainly overcast conditions.

The June CET was 13.5ºC (-1.2ºC below the 1981-2010 average) and the coldest June since 1991. The last July with a mean below 15ºC was 1988 (Average 14.7ºC)

Wow - terrible summer in the UK. perhaps it'll cheer up in time for the Olympics. Looks like the jetstream is responsible - but have also noticed the Gulf Stream has been weaker than normal / displaced for quite some time - see here -> http://weather.unisys.com/surface/sst_anom.gif - wonder if this has anything to do with the current weather pattern?

June's temperatures in Birmingham were pretty close to Sydney's June temperatures (min/max 9.7 to 17.7). Sydney was wetter (over 200mm in most suburbs) and sunnier (5.3 hours). Anyway, hopefully the UK can get all of this bad weather out of the way before the Olympics. I note that Wimbledon seems to be getting reasonable weather when I've looked in.

It's a cold clear night in Sydney now (7.6 degrees at Olympic Park at 11:30pm).

If you think this summer has been bad, we've had much worse in the past.

August 1912 is considered to be the all time worst summer month on record.

Quote:
August. The wettest (average 183 mm, 231%), dullest, and the coldest (12.9C CET) of the century. This is the only month which holds all three worst records, so it is without doubt the worst summer month on record. London only had one day over 21C, but Birmingham and Manchester had nothing higher than 19C. It didn't make 16C at all in Aberdeen. There was local frost on the 3rd. Some places had 250% of the normal rainfall. There were many days with over 25 mm of rain and maxima beneath 16C. On the 26th a deepening depression brough severe weather to East Anglia, resulting in the Great Norfolk Flood. There were 206 mm at Brundall, and 186 mm of rain at Norwich, with the rain continuing for 30 hours from the 26th into the 27th. The pressure at Great Yarmouth was 978 mbars. 100 mm of rain was widespread over Norfolk and Suffolk, with a westerly gale. The worst flooding caused by rain in East Anglia on record. Norwich was cut off for two days, with over 40 bridges destroyed, with flooding 15' deep in places. Three people drowned, an one particular variety of Norwich canary was lost. Much of the Fens stayed under water through the following winter. Widespread gales midmonth. It was not surprisingly an extremely dull month, with an average of just 94 hours. The highest temperature recorded all month was under 23C (73F) at Welshpool on the 4th.

Not bad for winter, although I would miss the chance of snow if I lived there.

No sign of any immediate improvement, the prospects for decent sunshine totals this week look poor.

Here's an excellent summary of the weather prospects for July posted on a UK weather forum.
