2 very large/broad developments in usual places of Cowra'ish and Trunkey'ish directions.

Very broad and well up. Not super high but 2 very large storm clouds. Getting a bit negrum arsenicum.

Great pictures Matty Smith, especially the lightning.

It's surprisingly warm at Observatory Hill: 27 degrees, even though today seems cooler than it has been since early last week. It seems to be sunnier there than where I am on the North Shore. There's also the usual heat island effect, worth a degree or two. It was gloomy and fairly cool this morning and I doubted the forecast max of 25 but there you go. Most of Sydney is at around 25-26.

I note that the NZ Met shows a front stalled over the Illawarra at 11:00 AEDT, apparently having slipped backwards: http://www.metservice.com/maps-radar/maps/tasman-sea-nz. Maybe the warmth, sun and front auger well for more storms.

The stalling front would probably explain why it is a few degrees cooler south of the Illawarra.

Heavy downpour in Millthorpe (near Orange). Plenty sparkage there too.

Lots of storms developing over much of inland eastern NSW

Some heavy drops just starting now, it's very dark and heavy rain is not far away. We might even get a decent drop if we get lucky.

A few grumbles up above as well.

Sparkage taking out the power a few times, UPS kicking in on the computers.

Hope we get more than just the edge of the rain, if we get the good bit - IT WILL BE HEAVY smile

Temp dropping like a stone, down 5 degrees in minutes. Heavy Southerly wind and very heavy rain. If this goes for even 30 minutes we may get 10mm or more easily I suspect.

Due to the 26C SSTs that are sitting just offshore it will be difficult to get a max below 25-26C at the moment. Can't see any autumn for the foreseeable future, in fact March has featured the most sustained warmth of the warm season at least for the coastal suburbs. This keeps up the rather Californian theme of the summer.

Good to hear Bathurst got a drink this afternoon, a bit of a day for the underdogs (we had 29 mm here also early this morning).

Had some nearly marble sized hail here in town, but damn there were some very good CG's. One about 50m away that I think hit a house. Torrential rain for about 10 minutes, gave the gutters a good clean out. Was nice to see.

But pretty sad that the first decent storm i've seen this season came in the middle of March..

The storm season in the last couple of years seems to have shifted from Summer to Spring and Autumn.

Or possibly an Oceanic / Island theme. Coastal Sydney has been like a warmer version of Auckland since shortly after the New Year, characterised by a narrow temperature range and no extremes.

Since January 7 at OH, all maxima have been in the range 22 - 29 rounded, with one warm outlier (32) and none cooler (the 'coldest' being 21.6). All mimima have been between 17 and 22 rounded, none higher and three slightly lower, the coolest being 15.5. Since early January we've had almost exclusively two types of weather: warm, sunny and about 20/21 to 26/28; and mild, cloudy, a couple of light showers and about 19/20 to 23/25.

And yes, next Monday's start to Autumn seems to have been postponed.

Sunday has a good chance of getting past 32C at Obs Hill, which might finally bring some 'character' to the weather. Looks like it might be a record run above 27C/80F for March too, although today was definitely UHI assisted.

00z GFS has some extreme storm chances for Sunday afternoon as well, but it will depend on the timing of the "front" I think. Sadly, it's now a front in inverted commas. End of GFS has another cold front around the equinox, sooner or later it has to be right smile.

Pretty early to be getting a front of that magnitude this early in the season. I remember in May 2012 we got a fairly significant one, perhaps winter will come even earlier this time round (around Easter if not sooner)
