i actually meet one of the returned soldiers from the middle east last night. certainly was a chartered flight, the 2nd aircraft was not part of their contingent. he didnt know what that plane was coming in for.
xavo, i didnt get a good look at the raaf plane, was thru the trees, certainly an airbus from what i could make out.

the 707's used to very regular visitors to tville skies. used alot in fa18 excercises for refueling of course. a few years ago, our news crew had the chance to go in a 707 to film a refueling fa18 thru the windows. sadly i couldnt go that day. once in a lifetime experience, i was pretty cut. Noisy but elegant aircraft.

Anyone heard more about the Virgin flight that made an emergency landing in Adelaide today? Only info i got was about possible fumes in the cabin and some people taken to hospital.

Scariest landing of my life couple of weeks ago - can anyone give me some insight into what happened here? Plane was a Saab 340, from Helsinki to Aland (Finland). Just before landing (after the descent had begun) the pilot banked very sharply, to the extent that I had an almost perpendicular view of the sea. Seconds after, while still on its side, the plane dropped altitude very sharply, leaving my stomach in my mouth (and almost its contents). After this, the pilot quickly corrected to normal position, but seemed to have trouble doing so, as the plane swayed from left to right. While it still seemed as though he was struggling to keep it stable, the plane slammmed into the runway with a neck cracking crunch (felt as though it literally dropped onto the runway), and fishtailed to its eventual stop. Thoughts?? I reckon it was a close one ....

Well, the sharp bank could be turning onto finals, but the losing height thing makes it sound more like a sideslip to me which would indicate that the pilot was too high when he was approaching the runway and didn't want to go around. Struggling to keep it straight sounds like a crosswind and slamming it onto the runway sort of backs this up as he probably wanted to get it on deck really quickly, although this could've been wind shear though.

Here's a video of the last concorde landing at Birmingham airport back in 2003.

Sad to see them go Steve, most wonderful aircraft though I never got to travel on 1.. I did however see one of the Air France ones up close & personal.. dont blame them though, the sound of those low bypass turbojets were absolutely ear-splitting to say the least lol.

Music to my ears tho.. (or whats left of them after concorde's take-off run)

A plane landing at Birmingham airport had a very bumpy landing last Tuesday.

Quote:

ALMOST 200 terrified passengers screamed in terror when a nightmare landing at Birmingham Airport saw the plane bounce 20 feet into the air four times.

The aircraft smashed into the runway each time with a big crash, and then bounced back up, according to an ex-RAF man who was on the flight.

Grandfather-of-eight Tommy Price said the plane bounced a total of four times before screeching brakes brought it to a halt.

Airline Monarch sought to play down the incident, saying the flight had ‘bounced slightly’ after being hit by cross winds, but admitted the landing was so heavy they had engineers check the plane over for damage afterwards.

Has anyone here experienced a bad landing before?

Hey all you aviation people... A question...

I was in Sydney last Thurs and was on a flight home to Gold Coast on Virgin leaving about 1730ish... There was a strong N/NE blowing and I was sitting in seat F - window seat on the right side of the plane. Taxiing out to the far end of 34R (i think thats right) I looked out over Botany Bay only to see a low level water spout zipping off across the water... Sky was clear with some cirrus only... Willy Willy on the water essentially was what it looked like.

Was this a vortex from the landing plane that passed us? Blowing out across the bay? Anyone else seen this before or know what I am talking about? Am I crazy? smile

Would love an explaination.

Don't think it would be a vortex, that would be highly unusual I would imagine.

Here's a couple of vortices that can be made by planes that I know about:
http://www.airliners.net/photo/USA---Air/Boeing-C-17A-Globemaster/1807597/M/ -> where the tarmac is wet and the water is sucked into the engine.

http://www.airliners.net/photo/KLM---Roy...dcdab584985ce17 -> the vortices (sp?) created at high level by wingtips/(winglets?)

http://www.airliners.net/photo/USA---Air...dcdab584985ce17 -> the vortices created by propeller tips.

and last but certainly not least (especially if you're caught behind it in a light aircraft...
http://www.airliners.net/photo/Singapore...2e4937d8614b29d -> wake turbulence created by all aircraft, but more noticeable by widebodies or 'heavies'.
There was a better picture than that on the site, but I couldn't find it.

Boing? Maybe that's the noise it makes when it hits the runway?

I thought they were only making the 800 for cargo, or is that the 800i?

hmm, interesting but probably going to be way to expensive for the everyday flyer imo. in the current age when business travel is at a minimum and people are flocking to budget airlines how many are going to be able to afford to fly in see thru airplanes that have their own golf simulators and the like.
and while on the whole see thru topic, what if you wanted to sleep while others in the plane wanted to see outside???
