Of course the time span is far too short to infer a great deal but my dad took daily max/min temps and rainfall measurements for most of the 80s at Hazelbrook in the Blue Mountains at ~650m ASL. The winter readings for both max and min are only about 1 warmer (I've averged them) than what Katoomba (1017m) currently experiences most winter's now. I'm pretty sure last winter would have been warmer, or as warm in Katoomba as any of those 80s Winters were in Hazelbrook. Yep, if this trend continues (which I'm sure it will!) Winter's are going to be very tame in the Blue Mountains indeed.
Another big difference between then (80s) and now is the astoundingly dramatic drop in the intensity and duration of fresh/strong/gale force Westerly and South Westerly winds. The trees don't really even have the marked 'flagged'' look that I remember as a kid. Finally (and sadly), even frosts, at least at 650m in the Blue Mountains are becoming a rarity in Winter.

Another ridiculously stunning day out here. About 16 degrees and full sunshine. This tin shed just became hot enough to turn on the cooler, no decent breeze to get the accumulating heat out of the un-insulated metal clad building. Crazy!!

It's looking like some wet stuff moving in. Hope we can have a better month than last. Look's like some of these showers could beat last months total for here.

I decided to walk to Berala train station (a 1.8 km or so walk) instead of drive as I head out to dinner. After looking at the radar loop I have gone from being confident of no chance do rain out this way to having a seed of doubt, with the potential for a wet walk home.

Personally, I'm hoping for it to be wet overnight. It's ridiculously long overdue!

Once again the southerly showers have slipped north of us. Seems to be a trend of late, I'm guessing it is due to the land breeze that we get off the escarpment, which pushes the moisture offshore.

Steady light rain has started on the North Shore.

The showers have been developing and inching closer over the last couple of hours. Up to 12mm on the Northern Beaches. Closer to home 1 mm at Chatswood so far.

There was some decent moderate rain about an hour ago, almost heavy at one stage which was great for a change.
The incoming showers are looking good and more wide spread on radar now, could be some ok totals by morning and about time even tho it's still not cold here atm for this time of year but who cares. Let it rain!

Sky is crying at Norah. Some handy falls. A fairly mildish night temp wise. Encountered some fog on Pacific Hwy not long ago near burned out big prawn servo. See gargantuan high straddling continent. More like mid April weather. If we dont get a fierce cold front in June I will go insane.

Damn those storms out to sea look good on radar. We've had no rain yet as expected, but with any luck once this land breeze wears off, the offshore storms MAY just get pushed in! smile

And I agree WJ, very typical April weather.

Woke up to a single clap of thunder at 5.30am this morning, which would be right on the one day this week I didn't have to be up before 6am. Constant rain from home to work with some pretty heavy falls when under the yellow on radar.

Wind direction flip flopped around overnight at Norah. Now out of SE and rain coming onshore. Yes reillyp some nice 'terminator eye' red out to sea on radar.

I heard some rumbles (plural) this morning too Rojo. Nothing too close and all CC/intracloud stuff.

Rain generally missing here, though there are some inky black clouds on the coastal fringe. The beaches will do well today, but lighter falls even a little way inland as all the forecasts suggest. Canterbury has done OK though I see.

Very warm and sticky though as others have pointed out. The airmass gets a little cooler over the coming days before more 70F days next week. Hoping for at least 2-3 weeks of winter...

I see Newcastle just had a quick fire 20mm in the last half hour.

Nothing up here yet, although clouds are starting to build up nicely after a nice warm sunny morning!!

Getting really tired of this cloud. We are getting a few peeps of sun today but not enough, and it means my house is cold-as in the evening.

Here is a short timelapse of one of those clouds building up and fading away to nothing. Taken with my mobile phone.

There have been a few moderate showers here during the last half hour os so. It's felt fairly cool today although I note that Observatory Hill almost made 20 today during what must have been a short burst of sunshine around mid afternoon. Increbibly, that will be only the third sub 20 maximum there this year.

I note that Ocean temperatures have dropped back towards the seasonal average so that would take the edge off the warmth on the coast: http://new.mhl.nsw.gov.au/data/realtime/sst/Sydney

GFS seems to be indicating a cold front the weekend after next.

Some local cooling perhaps near shore due to the westerlies over the past couple of days, but still a lot of very warm water just offshore if you look at the SST anomaly chart.

Unusually for a southerly airstream, we had more cloud than further north capping our max at just 17, which may be one of the few below average maximums we get this month. Sub 20C days for Obs Hill might be few and far between this year.
