Does anyone know why that happened today?

Simply put, thick cloud cover preserved some of the morning inversion- and at this time of year, zero sun means little heating at the surface to break it. Moss Vale is well above any inversion in this type of pre-frontal setup, so the temp there wasn't as cold relative to the airmass (still 1-2C colder because of the cloud cover though).

Assuming full sun, the coast would have reached 20C quite comfortably with a 925 hPa temp of about 11C (roughly the temp at Mt. Boyce), whilst Moss Vale would have seen about 13-14C.

And yeah, a sight for sore eyes seeing a below average maximum across the board today. Tomorrow will be warmer in absolute terms- funny how it works like that on the coast.

Thanks DB, I know about inversions and I thought that may have been the case, but I thought the wind would have definitely broke the inversion so I thought it may have been something else.

And yes it should be warmer tomorrow because of the Fohn effect, especially with the strong winds and sunshine that are forecasted tomorrow.

Well it got 20 degrees here today before that high cloud got here, but once that cloud got here the temp was on the decline pretty well instantaneously.
For most of the afternoon there was plenty of beautiful mammatus cloud about.

A bit of bluster outside but I go to bed unhappy as it looks like only NW/ West winds all week. maybe next week my beloved S'Wester will blow my socks off.

32 knot gusts at the airport already.

I see a 70kmhr gust at Canberra too. Judging by the forcasts we should see the winds really pick up after Lunch im guessing.

Love the forecast - Very Windy smile

Winter Shminter. Didn't get anywhere near forecast low of 9 . Was still 13ish at 3.30 and got just below 12 eventually. Seeing all those dense lows marching eastwards to battle but kept too far south by high pressure defense and not able to bring relief to a dull non winter siege on the coast here is frustrating. damn the swell is non existent so NW winds only keeping a flat ocean clean. Sux sux sux.

Gusting to about 60kmhr at this stage in the west, picked up straight as the sun came up.

Severe Weather Warning
for damaging winds
for people in the Metropolitan, Hunter, Illawarra, South Coast, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, South West Slopes, Riverina, Snowy Mountains and Australian Capital Territory forecast districts
Issued at 4:53 am EST on Tuesday 24 June 2014.
DAMAGING WINDS ABOUT SOUTHEAST NSW, INCREASING AND EXTENDING TO SYDNEY AND THE HUNTER DURING TUESDAY.

Weather Situation
A cold front crossed southeast NSW late yesterday, and an intense low pressure system west of Tasmania is expected to move east/northeast through Bass Strait today further intensifying the westerly winds over eastern NSW. Locally gale-force northwest winds are expected about the southeast of the state this morning. Gales are expected to become more general and stronger during the day and extend to central parts of the coast this afternoon. The gales will combine with snowfall over the southern ranges to produce blizzard conditions, refer to the Severe Weather Warning for Blizzard conditions for the southern ranges.

Winds locally averaging 65 km/h with gusts of 100 km/h are expected this morning in the Snowy Mountains, Southern Tablelands, Southwest Slopes, Central Tablelands, ACT, South Coast and Illawarra forecast districts. During Tuesday damaging winds of 65 to 80 km/h with gusts to 110 km/h will become more general through the above districts and extend to the Sydney Metropolitan Area, the Hunter district including the Central Coast, and the Riverina. Winds on the Alpine Peaks may reach 90 km/h with peak gusts to 130 km/h.

Strongest winds so far have been at Thredbo Top Station, which reported average wind speeds between 93 and 110 km/h, and wind gusts to 126 km/h between 9am and 11am Monday. Cabramurra reported wind gusts to 98 km/h at 4:15 pm Monday, and Nowra and Bellambi Point in the Illawarra reported gusts of 90 km/h early this morning.

Was never going to get that low on the coast with the wind that was predicted. Apparent temps however are worthy of winter, with negative values at Bellambi this morning.

I find yr.no to be the most accurate short term forecast available. If you're in a frost hollow, subtract about 2-3C from the minimum shown in calm conditions, but if you're well exposed the value is about right more often than not. Also for maximums you can usually add 2-3C if it's sunny.

http://www.yr.no/place/Australia/New_South_Wales/Swansea~2147737/hour_by_hour.html

As you can see, a mild 12-13C predicted for tomorrow morning as well because of the wind.

Well, windy, cool (3.3), drizzly in Bx at the moment. Some higher areas nearby MIGHT be getting some light snowfalls. Very little precip, wind chill making it QUITE chilly. Shame I'm working.

Lol I such a weather 'Jeremiah'. NW wind has picked up some knots. I love this site for what you can learn from other folks. Am I on the right track in the following example. Current Ap Temp at Nobby's Aws of around 4 degrees with a steady wind speed of 40kmh means a wind chill of minus 6. That about right ? Just wanna wrap my neurons around this stuff.
I used this Bom site for above wind chill factor

I think that site uses Williamtown Aws for stats. Swansea about halfway between Norah Head Aws and Nobby's Aws which are both exposed coastal sites unlike Williamtown which is inland.

Further to previous post. Norah Aws Ap 8ish and ws of 20kmh gives wcf of 2 degrees.

Edit Reason: Norah aws stats
