Temps in the Southern Tablelands certainly aren't as cold as what they were this time last night. Especially Cooma Ap which appears to be getting affected by that NNE'er that I was talking about last night.

Edit Reason: Cooma Ap,

I had no problem with Kizz's statement before and Blair, with thanks, answered it accordingly. Good stuff. It's great when queries like this can be sorted so amicably.

Again tonight, already lows of almost -10 at Perisher and TTS, and almost -6 at Cooma.
Fantastic temps to see.

Mostly clear and crisp. A few mid level clouds. Limp westerly. Still sub 10. These cold crisp mornings with dry air do wonders to bare hands. Ouch.

The cloud that came through saved us from a very very cold morning here. Only got down to 2.6. Perfect timing for patchy cloud to block the sun, only risen to 6.7 atm

Made it to 6.1C in Canberra. I am really disappointed with whoever writes the posts on The Canberra Times's Facebook page who says it's "bad news". Cold-weather whingers really give me the tomtits

NE'er on the beach now, how awesome to see!! can smell that ocean moisture and feel a change in season with it. Give it a week or two and we'll finally start to see that heat build up over the interior as this wonderful ridge sets in over the tasman eventually

Yes LRH that NE'er was certainly evident this afternoon with wind gusts from the NE getting up to 40km/h at Bellambi!

IMO though, it's quite disturbing to have a NE'er so strong in winter. And a NE'er does not feel nice in winter either. Too cold and moist.

Is this a sign of strong NE'ers all through summer that ensure crappy surf from 9am onwards every day? I certainly hope not.

CW- I fail to see how it is different. Everyone has different opinions; and just because you like the cold and frost, it doesn't mean everyone likes it.

In fact I would much prefer 40C heat, than -6C cold. 40C feels nice occasionally smile

Was today's NE'er a sea breeze or just the general circulation? Ocean temps off Sydney are about 17 degrees, a little below average. Maybe it's cooler inshore:

http://new.mhl.nsw.gov.au/data/realtime/sst/Sydney

In Sydney's outer West, it got close to 20 this afternoon, while about 17-18 near the coast, not enough of a differential for a sea breeze I would have thought, especially given the cold start.

What's been noticeable in recent days are the catabatic winds, which cause the tempersture to drop sharply when they reach the coast (e.g Observatory Hill around 10:00pm last night).

As for Summer, who knows. Weather in late Winter and Spring have very little correation with Summer temps in Sydney and nearby areas.

Reillyp: one difference is, the 40C temperatures drag on for ages and ages and happen almost every summer now, while the 6C spells like we are having now, are uncommon and last only a few days

I always remember having the odd spell of high 30s occasionally getting up to very low 40s when I was growing up on the NSW coast. The cold spells have certainly been less fequent of late but who knows. We may be seeing the return of the cold fronts. It could be a cycle that lasts a while.

C'mon. Man up! Make it 50c lol.

Well certainly boring weather courtesy of exceedingly large elephant high sitting on the continent. Massive. What's there to say. Simply no stimulus. I thought all this supposed increased energy in the system was meant to bring increased extreme weather occurences. Seems opposite is true. No decent storm in 7 years. Banal.

The problem is that upper level temperatures (500 hPa and above) seem to be warming faster than surface temperatures, leading to decreased instability, with the result being less snow and storms. We might also be seeing a dilution of El Nino as well, since warmer than average SSTs on this side of the Pacific are decreasing the temp differential with the eastern Pacific.

All of this is pure speculation of course...

Enjoying the cooler nights atm. I noticed Canberra almost got to -8C this morning and another -10 for Cooma Ap, enjoy CW. Re the NE'ly winds yesterday, yes it was more a general circulation, the winds higher up were E-NE (e.g. Mt. Boyce, Cooma). They did back around to the west later though.

Morning all.

Had the last few Days at The Entrance, I was at North Entrance and the nights were surprisingly cool.

Days very pleasant of course.

Heading through Yetholme Saturday arvo, there was still nice snow in shady areas and cuttings.

Good frost here this morning. smile

Not as cold here as Canberra and Cooma areas though, fair efforts there!!

Going to be a week of morning frosts and sunny days out here. smile

Yeah I always thought that we were going to see more extreme events. Remember all the weather docos that used to be on the Weather Channel on austar? They used to quite commonly say "The weather will become more severe and unpredictable because of global warming and the greenhouse effect". Still hasn't happened yet... In fact it's getting worse.

And Wind Junkie: Re- 40-50C, I would have been quite happy with those temps today, as I had a temperature/fever. I was pretty much shivering my @R$E off all day at school and I was so tired and drowsy. It felt like the coldest winter day I've experienced this year (although it was fairly mild in reality). When I got home at 3pm and went straight to sleep and I just woke up about 10 mins ago!!

Get stuck into the lemon and honey reillyp. Can work a treat. And I can tell ya I just might need it myself as been feeling a bit off colour this arvo. If I succumb to a winter bug it will be first time in yonks. Anyway hope you feelin better mate.

Was a warmy today. 20 degrees. Had a dank SE for good part of afternoon. Was cool on skin. Some smoke haze at sunset. Burn off somwhere. It is now still, clear and chilly.

By the way. For those who live near ocean or lake, have you noticed how clear water is. Lack of rain run off maybe. Quite topic of conversation up this way.

Another stunning crystal clear morning, a wee bit chilly got down to 1.0, but can't complain about the warmth of the sun right now.

Looks like things will warm up from now on, a weak change tonight which will introduce some cloud and wind. EC is keen on a solid week of onshore winds next week as well with some showers for the coast. I'm enjoying the cold mornings but we desperately need some moisture on the coast before the fire season really takes hold.
