Hi all

We are giving Weatherzone a facelift!

Over the last few months, we have been working to build a new homepage, update and enhance the look and feel and provide a better experience for our users. Most of the content is the same but these changes have provided us with a platform to make further continual enhancements into the future.

Today we have opened up our beta test site for all forum users to experiment with as we look to add the finishing touches and fix any remaining bugs.

Weatherzone Beta: http://beta.weatherzone.com.au/

A summary of the changes includes:

New Look and Feel

Things to look for include:
- New icons
- New design with backgrounds that change with the weather
- New fonts and colours
- New navigation - live content to entice users into other sections

New Home Page

- Large Dynamic Map
- Zoom in on your area
- Easier district and map management
- Warning Ticker
- New Video panel
- Enhanced Extremes and records

- Auto complete location search

We would be really keen to hear your feedback - particularly if you notice any bugs or functionality that is not working correctly. Please post any of these reports in this issue.

While we are always interested in suggestions for additional content or things that are missing on the site, that is not the main intention of seeking feedback right now. So, if possible, please keep "suggestions" out of this thread and just send them through the normal feedback channels.

Have fun!

I like it so far! I think it's great, a nice improvement... not too 'radical' a change for people. I think that's one big consideration for upgrades/enhancements to websites these days, in that people will have been using this site in it's current form for a great many years and if things change suddenly, even if the changes are great, just having to retrain your brain where to look on screen for things can be too much for a surprisingly large percentage of people.

In all honesty, I don't like it (and leaning towards hating it).I hope the subscription price doesn't rise because of changes to cover the cost.

The map of Australia looks amateur with the bold numbers. They completelyt cover the country, and ofcourse Melbourne is now located somewhere between Adelaide and Canberra, but where?

I suppose it is following the format of 'The Age' which is owned by the same company as WeatherZone.

For a long time I thought Weatherzone was superior to the BoM website, but now it looks like another weather site created by a Year 10 High School student looking for their first weather project working on their first website.

Please please please don't change the format- although this is unlikely now that the money has been spent.

Also, why are the tweets the dominating feature on the right hand side instead of weather news. Also makes it look unprofessional. The tweets should be at the bottom instead of the news.

Please keep it looking professional like it is now.

Why change something if it is working fine.

Sorry for the blunt review, but honesty is the biggest asset.

A step backwards for Weatherzone.

Also, a shame that some of the forecast areas are missing as well. Specific example includes the forecast for Dandenong is missing for metro Melbourne even though BoM has it in their list.

I know this is quite specific but it is a wider issue.

I use news.com.au ( for free ) for local forecast area which includes tidal, sun and moon info as well as most of what WZ already provides. Maybe for my $60 WZ could include these.

I really only use my $60 WZ access for the Forum for a greater diverse knowledge of what is going on, but it is so heavily censored it is really not worth the outlay.

As for the revamped version I find I have to go through extra steps to find what I am after compared to now.

With the background of Weathewrzone looking like the current weather, how does it know what it's like if I'm in Melbourne compared to Darwin? Or will it be Sydney based just like that other weather service (based on Foxtel)?

The background weather graphic is derived from your local weather location.

RWM - all of the information you describe is (freely) available on the local weather page. Additionally, forum access is free.

Thanks all for your feedback so far - keep it coming!

Credit given where credit due: I just discovered that you can see synoptic charts for all over the world.

Love it.

But unfortunately the world countries list is incomplete and I am very frustrated that Macedonia is still missing from the list despite sending an email to Weatherzone. It would be handy to have it on here instead of having to go to external sites.

The response from Weatherzone was that you get your list from the WMO and Macedonia wasn't there. I can definitely say this is untrue. It is there. More specifically it is under The Former Yugosalv Republic of Macedonia.

This was Weatherzon'es chance to refresh the list, but I suppose colours and graphics were more important than facts and information.

Quoting my earlier post to Q&A:

..surely to the reformatted site???!!!!

When I first saw the new weatherzone site, I didn't like it. But once I actually explored the site, I liked it quite alot. I really love how the main map features an interactive world synoptic chart and observations. I also like how theres a radar and sattelite, and these features can be ticked or unticked depending on what the user wants on the main map. A real winner!

I also like that right at the bottom theres an extensive list of extremes and records.

However, I don't like how on the main map theres only forecasts for today and tomorrow. Why not 7 day forecasts?

I also feel that on the local weather, near the bottom underneath the "sun and moon" times I feel that it is a little too cluttered.

Overall it is a radical change but it is a change for the better (for the most part). More conservative people will probably dislike the change, so I think there should be an option to use the old style or the new style, like there is here on the forums

Northdandy - I have kicked off an internal task to add forecasts for Macedonia.

Orangeroughy - thanks for the feedback. As I mentioned in the first post, this relaunch is more about a redesign of the look and feel rather than adding new content. However, we will take your suggestion on board for future updates to the content of the site.

Reillyp - thanks for your feedback. We checked the usage statistics of the homepage and the *vast* majority of users only ever looked at today and tomorrow on this map. The number of users who used this map to go beyond tomorrow was negligible. Most users go to their local weather page to access 7 day forecasts for their specific location. Therefore, it ended up being a design decision to only display Today/Tomorrow on this map and leave the 7 day forecasts to the local weather page.

While all of these suggestions are great, what I am *really* interested in is any bug reports i.e. things that don't actually work on the new site. Do I take it that the lack of bug reports means that everything is working as it should? If so, great!

IE9 does not render the pages properly. However, I am assuming that you don't support older browser versions such as that.

Fair enough, I must be one of the few people that use the 7 day forecasts on the map (mainly NSW/ACT) because I like comparing other places weather, without having to click into every individual forecast (which I'll now have to do).

I'm sure I'll get used to it! smile

Theres no viruses or bugs from what I've seen, and it seems to be faster than the old site. Everything also works.

BTW: Happy Birthday Matt smile

Northdandy - your wish is our command: http://www.weatherzone.com.au/world/europe/macedonia

Kizz - can you please clarify exactly what issues you are experiencing in IE9? Feel free to send me an email directly (mpearce@weatherzone.com.au) with screenshots if that would be easier. We do support IE9 so it is important that we iron out any issues in that browser.

Thanks all for the birthday wishes smile

MASSIVE smile on my face Matthew. Thanks very much for that. Makes my conversations easier with my fellow MAcedonians when I tell them to visit Weatherzone. In the past their first impression was "pft, no Macedonia". Lol. But now it will be better. A big win for me.

Getting used to the new layout. The big winner is definitely the dynamic map. Love the zoom as well, as others have mentioned.

Perhaps the Extremes can be near the top, like an IN YOUR FACE approach for others that visit the site from overseas, but no big deal.

Also love the background that changes depending on the weather.

Thought has definitely been put into this upgrade. Well done

MP - is this upgrade anything to do with why my Android mobile phone now (in last several weeks)has put an "m." in front of the URL for all my book marked IE weatherzone saved sites??

If so, I HATE IT. I hate the "mobile" WZ offering when I want to be logged on via my paid account and will cease my subscription if this cannot be resolved.

Petros, if you scroll down to the bottom of the page there should be the option to access the 'standard site' which will load weatherzone as per usual.

For the record, once I checked the "std site" box on one IE bookmarked page on my Android phone, it somehow carried through to all the other bookmarked pages. So back to being a happy, and as usual, somewhat bewildered, little customer.

A long time since I have commented here

As a long time subscriber to Weatherzone the good news is that I can live with and will adapt to the new Weatherzone format.

The bad news is unless there is a change made to the printed lettering, the contrasts, the grey tone of the lettering which I can barely read due to the grey tone lack of contrast with the back ground, I will probably cease my subscription.

It seems in very recent times that a rather marked ignorance of customer's and reader's mark one eyeball limitations has set in amongst web site designers.
The appearance of the site has become more important than the ability to at least read the printed word easily and without strain.

I am seeing this shift towards a significant reduction in ease of readability occurring in a number of recently re-designed web sites all of which are now using much lower grey tone contrasts for lettering and often smaller print in their newly designed sites .

With the new print grey tones lack of contrast with the background which almost fades the print into the background, I am spending far more effort in trying to actually read and decipher those almost unreadable words than I am in trying to decipher the actual content of those words and paragraphs.

The printed word is the main means of communicating information to the reader so to make the printed word much harder to read is self defeating for a site that depends totally on it's ability to impart information for it's profitability.
The customer wants to be able to read across the subject without any effort or straining and to concentrate on getting the information in the message rather than just trying to expend a good deal of effort just trying to read the bloody thing in the first place .

I suspect that a high percentage of subscribers to Weatherzone are in their mid working or older years, those years from the mid thirties on and when eyesight is beginning to slowly deteriorate and the printed word gets ever harder to read.

And perhaps it would be wise for the Weatherzone web site designers to take a good look at the print font and grey tone contrasts of the world's largest web site, that of Google.
Google [ and Wikipedia ] hasn't got to where it is by making life difficult for it's readers of all ages by using a hard to read, small, very low contrast printed word.

Nor should Weatherzone

My eyesight is excellent and I compared a few sites that ROM mentioned WIKI and Wzone etc. Darker is definitely more easier on the eye and encourages the reader to scan and take in the info. That little bit lighter grey does make you look harder at it to read. Bugger maybe my eyesight isn't excellent haha. Valid points though ROM. Even these Forums are darker and easy to read.

Good layout, much more user friendly, especially for iPhone/iPad. I see you've reinstated the forum to the main menu which is good. I like the map at the front and how you can move about to see what's happening in the wider world and zoom in to a location, adding elements as required or removing them to unclutter the view.

Well done.

Isn't there till the option (at this stage anyway smile )to change the weatherzone page style. It is at the bottom, rather than keeping with the default style if that is your choosing?

Good to see so many people being receptive. Usually humans don't take change very well (especially with a website they've used daily for years)

I'll have to give it some time. Bit jarring at first but I'm sure I'll get used to it. Maybe some good points raised over legibility by ROM, but I'll hold off on any judgements until I spend more time on it.

I love the new weatherzone refresh and have been watching it since the start of this thread, however I have an issue with the current temp/humidity/wind display in Chrome, but is fine in other browsers such as Firefox, see the following video, so you can understand the issue.

Please click the "Full Screen" button for best viewing results:

Appreciate some input.
I just checked it on IE11 and it displays correctly (the writing/symbols are all contained within the box). Possibly an issue with Chrome?

Yeah it looks to be an issue with Chrome specifically. I have tested it on Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, Maxthon and the only one I see an issue with is Chrome.

Appreciate your input wink

I do find the colour scheme harder to read than previously. Too little contrast.

I have no trouble whatsoever with reading it, but I guess I still have young eyes smile

Why has Weatherzone gone back to default style? Is this happening to anyone else?

Ironing out some bugs I would suggest. A few people have been having some issues with the site in the last hour or so.

Hi great Page, just not sure if it's my end. I'm using chrome on my mobile I think chrome updated the browser. Now when I go on the forums the list is longer and narrower. I can still see everything as usual just have to scroll down a fair way to the bottom didn't do it last week. But yea probably just my mobile..

Once again great site.

Hi Heat Trough,

Thanks for your post. We have created a temporary roll back to the previous version of Weatherzone while we iron out some bugs that were causing some issues. Social media notification will becoming shortly. Point well made.

Not sure if it's just my problem, but my computer has reverted back to 'old Weatherzone'. Is this some cache problem just with me or has the new system been temporarily turned off to rejig?

If you're referring to GFS, ACCESS-R and the gang - Click on 'Radar & Maps', and on the menu that appears beneath, then click on 'Australian Charts' (on the right hand side of that menu). smile

The beta site appears to be still available: http://beta.weatherzone.com.au/

Please remove all fairfax advertising from Weatherzone refresh.

I am a paid pro member, and feel I should have zero ads, this is what I paid good money for, plus the other extra's. I really dont care for in house advertising, plus I think it is not that fair that paying members should have to put up with this.

So please remove these adverts, and the "network strip" at the top.

Or - have a menu for fairfax on the main menu bar under say - services, then I guess we will be all happy and not just weatherzone.

hrmm while it would be nice, you would have buckley's of that happening.
Every site you visit even if you are a paid member will still have links and ads promoting its business. It is in fact still 'in house' advertising.

Sure, other advertising is a different matter, but again, this is how a lot of websites survive. What would we prefer I suppose? Weatherzone with ads or no site whatsoever?

Which Fairfax advertising are you referring to?

The network strip at the top is common across all Fairfax sites e.g. http://www.smh.com.au/ so is unfortunately a non-negotiable.

Not on the current weatherzone site, can't see it, nope:

So is this the only reason as to why weatherzone is updating? Because we currently dont see any in house advertising?

I dont want it!

Now we are forced to view it, great. That is really sad to see that weatherzone is going this way.

Ram it down their throats, we dont care!

I guess this should read (after weatherzone refresh is done):

"Forced inhouse adverting"

Am I right?

Oh wait, there it is, so small it took me awhile to find it, at the bottom (not at the top IN YOUR FACE)

This is not a "network strip" - it is a tiny clickable icon

Imo, the network strip is fairly subtle. smile

I don't even really view it as advertising, it's more of a navigation tool to other sites within the Fairfax network.

Of course you don't, you're a moderator, you are loyal to Fairfax, so you would say this even if you did not believe it to be true in your own eyes.

In my view it is advertising. And if anyone says it is not, needs to look up the meaning of advertising in a dictionary.

Stated from Google Definition:

"the activity or profession of producing advertisements for commercial products or services"

So if anyone says that this is not advertising, needs their head red.

Clearly everyone involved with Fairfax (direct or indirect) will say they don't notice the advertising, this would be a no brainer.

Clearly here is not the right place to bring up this issue, because every single issue I have brought up here on these forums has been ignored!

When I notified someone here about the leak of usernames to the world on the new weatherzone refresh site, it was white washed over and nothing was done about that for 14 days (the leak was still in place 14 days after I reported it), until I contacted the Privacy Officer directly at Fairfax headquarters.

It took them less than 12 hours to stop this leak however, when I contacted someone here on these forums, it was ignored.

So clearly if I was to look into this in-house advertising for pro members (why should I pay money to see advertising that is clearly visible for non paying members?), this is simply not the place to get things done.

Right?

If it worries you so much, just use your adblocker to remove it, geez. It's a few pixels at the top of the screen, hardly obtrusive advertising. if Fairfax sites are required to have it then there isn't much WZ can do about it - you should complain to Fairfax instead.

Geez, it must be the moral of the whole thing, I guess....................... but many here don't seem to understand this concept (it is not a hard one to grasp, I tell ya)!

I will probably use adblock to remove the problem as I stated in my previous post (clearly you did not read this - ya know the one at the top of this page) however, as a pro member I think I have the right to tell weatherzone where they are going wrong. I am a paying member after all.

It is clear to me now, that this is not the place to do that!

I usually don't like flogging a dead horse, but when I think someone is doing something wrong - we speak up here in Australia, lets not get government or big corporation scared people, for god's sake, lets not follow the American clowns, if we do - it will be the end of us.

So much for free speech, and constructive criticism (and company forums) these days.

I think the point you are missing is that Weatherzone are not doing anything wrong.
It's just something you don't like which you do have the right to complain about as yes we do have free speech.

Go onto any subscription website (that you pay for) and you will find in-house advertising. Third party advertising is normally removed, and is with Weatherzone as well. If it wasn't then you would have a case. But in this instance, as much as you hate it - you don't.
This is not just something that WZ are doing, it is standard across the internet.

And, its back to old WZ again thismorning. Any idea when the problem will be fixed and it'll be back? Not that I'm impatient with being back on old WZ, just curious to see when the new site will be back.

Today we have opened up our beta test site for all forum users to experiment with as we look to add the finishing touches and fix any remaining bugs.

Weatherzone Beta: http://beta.weatherzone.com.au/

A summary of the changes includes:

New Look and Feel

Things to look for include:
- New icons
- New design with backgrounds that change with the weather
- New fonts and colours
- New navigation - live content to entice users into other sections

New Home Page

- Large Dynamic Map
- Zoom in on your area
- Easier district and map management
- Warning Ticker
- New Video panel
- Enhanced Extremes and records

- Auto complete location search

We would be really keen to hear your feedback - particularly if you notice any bugs or functionality that is not working correctly. Please post any of these reports in this issue.

I've just checked the website for compliance using http://squizlabs.github.io/HTML_CodeSniffer/, you might want to do the same, especially in light of the recent court case against Coles.

MY suggestion for improvement is to remove the black border around the + strikes. It dulls them down a bit, they don't pop out.

But then they'll blend into the background of CC strikes, you wouldn't be able to distinguish between them at all. Imo, the black border helps them 'pop' out.
I'll agree that once you get to the blue and purple colours it does get harder to tell the difference, but with the loop you can go back in time and see them as they happened in the brighter white/red colours.

The option to unselect/select CC and CG strikes might be handy tool though?

Well as we are talking weather programs, Mike Manning had a great weather program that included a storm tracker. That is, you selected a radar site, indicate in the "app" where you were and then choose an approaching storm from the lighting tracker. The program would then, if the storms track was suitable (not to fast etc)would give an indication of when the storm might hit you. It was a really great part of his weather program Australian Weather Monitor (hey Mike whens the replacement coming smile )

Hi everyone. Yes the new look site is great and even I am having no trouble getting around the site. I do particularly like what apear to be slight larger labels and clearing links. I was never blessed with good eyesight so I appreciate sites that have good clear lables and buttons that are easy to read and find

Don't know whether this is the right place for site feedback, but here goes.

I've never had any troubles with the Weatherzone Forum on my computer, but have to say it's almost a nightmare on my phone.

I don't know whether it's my Sony Xperia Z that's the problem, or just a generalised mobile thing. My phone is up to date with all it's software.

When I open a thread I find that the posts are in different sized fonts to each other. Some a standard readable size, but others miniscule & an unreadable size. They have to be zoomed and scrolled back & forth across the page. Really tough going when there's a cyclone or 2 or 3 around and trying to keep track of busy threads.

Also - the Reply field has a miniscule font, which I have to zoom to read what I'm typing, it also jumps around a bit. Sometimes it's impossible to place a cursor; thankfully I have arrows on the keyboard.

Now that the cyclone rush appears to be over it's not a problem. Mainly though, I'm curious as to why it displays this way.

My two cents worth.

Same with me mate, I use a Samsung galaxy S4 and it can be annoying at times but it doesn't usually bother me too much. Your phone ain't the problem.

I was following 5 or 6 threads at one stage in the last few weeks - Marcia Pam Nathan Olwyn FNQ & incidentals.
Hard enough to shift around between them all on a 5" screen.
It doesn't happen on the two other forums I read on the phone.
Reading the notification emails is fine of course but I'd rather do it within the thread for quick replies.
Weatherzone is such a brilliant forum I just wonder why reading it on my mobile is such a total mess.

Some beefy winds due to the pressure gradient between the high and the low.
