It's more the crosswind component across runways that has a bigger impact on aircraft landing. Light aircraft have published crosswind limits while airline aircraft have max demonstrated crosswind figures. If it's mostly a headwind along the runway, aircraft can still land safely in surprisingly strong winds. Fair bit of turbulence about though.

Great to see some coastal areas finally getting a good drink. Still a few areas missing out but it goes where it goes.

We have had only light/patchy falls here. The Bx airport had 5mm on Sat night but town reports 20mm. Last night we had about 7mm as well.

Definitely patchy out here. A whole lot better than zero though, so that's good.

Enjoy the breeze today you coasties. smile

Any idea what the triangle feature is on the current doppler images @ Appin?

Not sure if it something wrong with it, or something else going on!

The triangle seems be in the radar 'shadow' formed by a wedge of 'red' signals. Perhaps intense weather is blocking the signal (?) The front end of the triangle (nearest the radar) is irregular, which suggests it is a 'natural' source (could be something else - even the terrain), rather than a doppler source.

Found this amazing graphic of Wollongong wind speed and direction in the site "Coastalwatch". They get kudos for amazing graphics! It sure says a lot about what has been happening down there today. The "rotation" is a beauty!

Wind and rain are starting to ease a little. Mostly drizzle now, but theres still the occasional heavy downpour in the mix. The action is starting to shift northwards.

The back ovals at my High School have been underwater all day because we have a creek right next to us, and it's a raging torrent of brown, muddy water.

Wind has shifted to the west now and I'd imagine it won't be long before it's shifts to the south. It's been quite a pleasant day here, temp probably hit 18c or 19c, cooling off now that it's fully overcast.

Gusty rain now. Certainly right about wind Andrew. Kicking in now from ssw and wall to wall grey. Some diehard still fishing on a breakwall. Talk about keen. Swell picking up

Still blustery. Cloud has thinned. Sun just winked. Stopped raining for now although band still to south so might get some more.

Think guy didnt catch anything Andrew. He looks like a drowned rat as he trudges down the road with a funny walk. Trying to stop his wet pants rubbing on his inner thighs I guess. Either that or he @@ooped himself. Head down into the wind too.

Bursts of high winds in eastern burbs and a washing machine surf and big swell at Coogee, waves reaching 8 metres off shore (MHL). Rain finally easing to showers along coast but still few cells heading Sydney way.

Total rain for event so far (to 3pm): Randwick 76mm. Top score in metro area (to 3pm) was 116mm at Royal National Park and 108mm at Sydney Olympic Park. Illawarra/South Coast escarpment hit hardest, as usual with these systems, highest 240mm at Robertson, 233mm at Brogers, and 226mm at Clover Hill (Illawarra).

Nice and spectacular video blizzard!!
Thanks for sharing.
Some big totals there Fujita, started raining about 3pm here and the wind has died with its arrival, although I think the wind should pick up once this main rainband moves further north.
Currently 6.7mm so far!!

Cannot see much on radar, however the 15:00 visible sat shows a nice spiral in clouds. Could provide a nice spike in winds later?

Go to http://realtime2.bsch.au.com/vis_sat2.html?region=sydney

and look at the 05.33 image out from Wollogong
