Had some rumbles on and off throughout the morning, inlcuding two close ones. Otherwise nothing special but still good to hear some thunder. Shame about all the cloud, if we had some proper clearance, it would've gone off.

All over now, looking forward to the weekend and early next week, if the models are to be believed.

Looks like the worst of the storms are over for Melbourne. Would love to be proven wrong... frown

While I'm at it, I'll write up my story for today, based on the Weather Chaser Melbourne radar archives. smile

The first showers for the day arrived in my around 6am, with the first thunderstorms developing above the Dandenongs around an hour later. Shower and thunderstorm activity increased in my area from around 7:30am onwards, and up until 9am we picked up 1mm of rain. As stated in my post at 10:27am, we had some thunder, but it was sporadic, random and occasional, and I didn't see any lightning.

Up until around 10:30am, the showers and thunderstorms were mostly occurring as large clusters with locally heavy falls, but from about 10:30am they started coming in waves. The first wave lasted up until about 10:45am, with the second striking around 30 minutes later. We had a red-core cell embedded in the northern front edge of Wave Number 2 pass directly over me around 11:18am, bringing a brief burst of intense rain, followed by another one or two cells that brought more moderate/heavy rainfall around 10-12 minutes later as I was heading to Tecoma.

Wave Number 3 burst across the Dandenong Ranges as a more solid squall line around midday, with more intense rain and a few bursts of thunder (close lightning reported back at my house near Belgrave by my family), but it was over within 15 minutes.

Wave Number 4 arrived at 12:30pm, a bit less intense than Wave Number 3 though but of similar duration (minus the thunder). Around 1pm, the clouds broke up enough to review some sunshine and blue sky (the day had been virtually completely-overcast up until then).

Wave Number 5 hit around 1:20pm, and it was by far the most-photogenic storm of the day, with its arrival preceded by a bank of very dark cloud (almost shelf-like) stretched across the western sky from south to northwest. Strangely, there was hardly a breath of wind as the shelf passed over, in fact near-total silence except for one single rumble of thunder before the rain fell. 15-20 minutes later, the storm passed on.

On the backside of Wave Number 5, a band of moderate showers (Wave Number 6) developed and extended south, passing over my area around 2:20pm and lasting another 15 minutes.

The change arrived around 3pm, with the day's high temperature hitting a top of 20.3C just beforehand. The change brought in a shallow, dirty-grey stratus layer (yuck!). At the same time, another burst of showers passed over from the northwest.

The latest round of showers is coming through atm, some of which are quite heavy; we had a burst of quite intense rainfall a few minutes ago, with the peak rainfall rate being 31.0mm/hr. Still some more showers (maybe a thunderstorm or two if we're lucky) to come...

10.5mm of rain since 9am, so 11.5mm in total. Current temperature is 16.7C and falling. With the exception of the 25km/h gust I measured around 7:30am, winds have been light, registering barely 17km/h. Humidity is 94% and dew point at 16C. And it's just started raining again! smile

Looking forward to next weekend! If the synoptic pattern is anything to go by, this trough is set to retreat north to Queensland and stay there for the better part of the coming week, before extending back south and forming a low pressure system over Victoria, bringing heat and possible tropical humidity with it! Could see some more good rain and thunderstorms with it! Would be a fantastic way to say goodbye to spring and hello to summer! Too early to know for sure but fingers crossed... smile

16.5C out there atm. Still a fresh round of locally heavy showers racing in from the northwest, but they should be all gone in an hour or so; had some possible small hail around 20 minutes ago. Shame my tennis lesson has been postponed until tomorrow, but this rain is always welcome! smile

Yes not very happy about the overcast conditions and lack of good structure today Dawoodman! And once again Sydney robs and cheats Melbourne of the epic storm action we want so badly! mad frown

Still, on a positive note, it was nice to hear thunder, and all up I've collected 13.7mm of rain since 9am (14.7mm in total). The showers cleared off around 10-15 minutes ago. Currently 15.8C with 98% humidity. smile

We didn't get any of the NW'ly wind progged for today, stayed calm and heavily overcast.

With nothing significant in terms of a harbringer, nice steady rain set in here for 90 minutes at 3pm (including a couple of distant muffled thunder rumbles) to tally a very welcome 8mm smile

After an hours break, under the same high level cloud, the rain has just resumed (and its good stuff too), ...hope it can hang around for another hour or so!

We are at 1006 hPa, max temp got to 22.9C after lunch, still calm but temp is now 19C.

I can sense all Gippslander crossing their fingers in hope of an hour or so's more of this rain!

Sorry to be talking to myself, but anyhow we got one (and single) last boomer of a thunderclap over Maffra 30 mins ago as the rain resumed after an hours break, add another 3.75mm to the tally I posted above smile

Looks like the final scraps of the system are still bring showers in the Latrobe Valley atm, so hoping to pick up another mm here in an hours time to polish off a good rain day.

Don't worry about Sydney, we will repay the favour! Remember the overnight sound and light spectacular we got a couple of weeks after Sydney's big storms last month? I was spewing watching the Sydney radar that day.... but our revenge on Oct 27 tasted sweeter than even the most perfectly cooked KFC Hot n Spicy. Our time will come, mark my words... evillaugh

plus it seems Newcastle and the Wollongong area always get the lions share while Sydney itself gets the scraps!

Mildura is doing good atm, 3 cells yesterday plus another today and lots of storms in the general area last few days.

Haha thanks Hells Kitchen yes our time will come! grin

Anyway, my gauge recorded a few extra millimetres from those showers and drizzle patches that popped up over the Dandenongs around dinnertime, so since 9am I've measured 16.9mm, bringing my combined event rainfall total to 17.9mm! Wonderful!! That should keep things green and moist for a while longer! smile

Hopefully those showers to the south and southwest can make it into the Melbourne area overnight, more rain is ALWAYS welcome! smile

Tonight's my first single-digit night since last Monday, right now it's around 9.5C. smile

The passing of the trough began with some very strong gusty wind, WZ states 84Kph. 21mm in my gauge (although airport recorded 26mm) after 3 hours of heavy lengthy showers with rumbling thunder and some decent, loud claps in between, commencing at about 5pm yesterday and all over by 8pm. The only drawback was the barely visible lightning due to it still being daylight. Very nice indeed!

Well done Gabby and Alexia, the last showers last night got Maffra to 13.75mm for yesterday (and this thread). Very happy and looking keenly towards next Sun-Tue in these parts smile

Just wanting to cover the cold front currently brushing Southern Victoria, as well as yesterday's weather! smile

I hit a gorgeous top of 24.6C, and yes it was slow to get there with mostly cloudy conditions persisting until lunchtime. The sun was lovely, but the wind was a bit of a nuisance during my afternoon tennis lesson (even though the strongest gust was only clocked at about 17km/h). And I had a surprise spit of rain land on me from a stray, small shower overhead around 3:30pm lol. smile

Overnight low of 9.2C, and like yesterday it was slow to clear up and warm up, but now it's 21.4C. The radar shows a few light showers around in response to the cold front moving through, whether they'll reach me or no is yet to be seen. smile

I've already extended the dates once when the original 'event' had long gone, probably best to cover anything else (unless it's wrapping up the past event) in the Melbourne/VIC day to day thread, particularly if it's not really 'significant' enough to warrant it's own thread. smile

Cheers smile
