I take it back, epic does not do it justice. A solid three hours of constant lightning.

The synoptic map does have that trough reaching the coast tomorrow morning so guessing this cluster is riding a weak change. You wouldn't think there would be storms after the anvil-filled crud fest and NE'ly gale we had today, but then again stranger things have happened.

These storms just keep on throwing up new updrafts! So good. Reminds me of when I used to live in Darwin.

The band is moving north and like you said balmz making new cells ahead of the main band,it all might reach Sydney, and if it keeps the new cells forming ahead the system might reach me,up here in the Hunter in a few more hours.

Look's like there is a slight chance of some stormage moving in. I just hope I did not jinx it. Lightning visible to the south.
It's been a couple of days of the SSS, sorry I had to say it but it's still looking ok atm.

And now we're getting another decent storm with even more lightning, although mostly sheet lightning rather than CC and CG lightning of the former storm.

Looks like more to come too. Just brilliant, absolutely brilliant. smile

Great stuff champ, and looks like more to come for you tonight. I was a bit younger than you - maybe about 12 (year 6) when I really got an interest in weather, and it was a day like today..... (for you) that did it for me. Plenty of storms, and one particular day, about 5 decent thunderstorms over an 18 hr period that finished at about 10 am on a Saturday morning. The last one, was the best.

Make the most of it buddy. These type of events are quite rare.

Look's like one of these situations where cells erupted in the basin atm. Hoping at least.

Thanks Homer, I think a similar night to this one back when I was 7 in year 1 in 2005 that gpt me really interested in weather as well. smile

I got woken up at about 11:30 by an extremely loud bout of thunder and looked out my window (west facing) and it was absolute insanity. Flashes every single second and soon after, the thunder was non stop for 5 mins!! Similar to what ipex in Katoomba was saying. Some of the different lightning was amazing!

It was the best storm I have ever witnessed in terms of lightning and thunder.

I took a 10 minute video and got a few nice video stills which I will share at a later date as there is a blackout atm. I'm just lucky I had charge left in my phone!! smile
Edit* Lights have just came back on.

There is now another very lightning active storm brewing to the NW. Will this be storm #5?

Hopefully this line gradually moves up into the basin so you Sydneysiders can get a drink and a lightshow!

Sounds fantastic mate, so happy for you experiencing that - like Homer said, it's not an everyday occurrence, so soak it up. smile

So, it's been a frustrating day here in Katoomba. This arvo we had continual storms just to the south, this evening storms passing us by off the north (made for some good lightning off in the distance though). Now, as I'm about to go to bed, there is the sound of thunder rumbling for the first time in a few hours - on radar it looks like there's some 'stormage' immediately south and west, and its moving NE, 's it shouldn't be long till something reaches us. Looks a bit more like thundery showers than fully-fledged storms but I could be wrong… hoping some of it makes it across for the Sydneysiders too!

Yeah ipex, that usually happens to us as well regarding the way the storms move either north or south. So frustrating aye!! Yeah it looks like you should get a storm up there judging by the radar.

Yeah Marts, it should keep its intensity through the basin, as it didn't break when moving down the escarpment here so I would assume that Sydney will be the same. Hard to tell though. Hopefully for your sake it doesn't fizzle.

Some nice lightning to the west from a cell that looks like rubbish on radar. Not as regular as the last storm but still a few very bright flashes. Hopefully I can get some sleep now or I'm going to be tired for work experience tomorrow!

What a chase! 9/10. Started out at Hill Top/Buxton and got the pulsies there with some small hail on two occasions and three mid level funnels, before heading to Yass for the evening action. Saw two beautiful sunset storms spitting out a few CG's with absolutely gorgeous colours. Then headed east and caught up to these cells after dark, which produced an alright lightning show and quite a nice gustfront, although CG's were not frequent. Intercepted at Goulburn with some hail to 1.5cm, before more hail at Marulan.

The real fun started near Bowral, as I waited for the line to come through. CG's picked up massively, eventually dropping overhead with more hail, incredible amounts of rain and wind. Finally made one last intercept near Bargo where the storm decided to drop a ridiculous amount of staccato CG's over the town in a very short period.. I have never seen such an intense barrage of close bolts before, it was seriously intense. About 10 bolts in the space of a minute within 200m of me, I almost lost control of my bodily functions...

Finally home and off to sleep!!

Cheers Homer, good to see your still around.
A nice light show across Northern Sydney around 0300,a good albeit early start to the day.
As for the rest of the day for the Basin, maybe some weak storms west of Penrith, and rain later this afternoon/night for the rest of the Basin.

Hope you nailed a few of those close ones on video and or photos ben! I can confirm the quality of the CG's at times. I missed out during the early afternoon as I was at Gundagai so had no good road option east. The storm that exploded on top of Albury at around 2pm looked briefly supercellular but nothing similar developed in the Wagga/ Temora area as I expected.

Around 3pm I began to notice the cu to my west drying out so headed to Yass then through canberra to Michelago to intercept an outflow dominant line that did produce some reasonable lightning around 6pm. Once this pased overhead I saw a new storm developing just west of Canberra so raced north again. I got one epic stacatto CG on video from about 10km away, If someone was able to get a photo of it from one of the lookouts near Canberra it would have looked sensational with the sunset colours around.

Must have just missed Ben as I was also in Goulburn until around midnight, picking up a few more bolts on video but pretty well spaced out unfortunately. On my way home through the highlands I saw a sneaky little storm west of taralga pumping out CG's at around 12:30am.

Funny night last night. Storms kept dodging us to the east and west. However around 9.30 the sky cleared to reveal the back end of a passing storm that was flashing away like mad - in the manner of other posters comments earlier. I stayed out and watched it retreating from us. Shame it Juuuust missed us.

We had more rumbles in the wee hours and a couple of mm.

Clear sunny and HUMID!! today. Unfortunately it looks like a couple of the "bigger" days in our forecast have been pulled back. Still I think a good chance of decent precip somewhere in the coming days. smile

Tennis WILL be steamy tonight. smile

Glad a few of you other guys had some fun last night too. Hopefully everyone gets a turn at some point.

Sunny and warm now with light Westerlies. It cleared up shortly after sunrise after a decent drop of rain last night. Checking last night's radar, it looks like I slept through the best of it.
