Finally getting myself a new DSLR camera for christmas. It's been way too long.

Need some input from you guys who do weather stuff.

Tossing up between a 600D kit which is $400 on special or a Pentax K-50 which would cost me about $550, maybe a touch more.

Very tempting to spend a bit extra and get something more expensive. In the end though, I'm interested in nuts and bolts of photography rather than megapixels and extra-features. I figure either of these will give me more than enough to start off with, and in the future once I'm more proficient I can upgrade. Seen demo shots from both and the image quality boost I'd get from a better model seems marginal compared to improving my basic skills.

Love the idea of an articulating screen on the 600D. Love the idea of weatherproofing on the Pentax since I tend to use my gear in a way where it might end up in the rain or get a few knocks and bumps.

Looked at mirrorless and while the size difference does appeal, feeling like I can get more for the price in a entry level DSLR?

Any input or experiences very much appreciated.

Forgot to mention -

I'll be doing landscapes, weather, everyday stuff, and eventually want to do some macro photography of insects and other small things.

Hey. Chris. I am in the same boat. Going to Antarctica next year so the chrissy present this year is a Cannon 700d kit from camera house. Was a grand after cashback in the end but that was with 3 lenses, a spare battery, a tripod and a camera bag so well worth the coin. I know 400 bucks is a big jump above what you are looking at but it is a fantastic kit. Although the bloody missus won't let me play with it until xmas day. Women are harsh aren't they? Don't know if you know but the entry level DSLR's tend to have a crop sensor which changes the focal length of your lenses.

That sounds like a great deal Brett. You're going to Antarctica?! I'm very jealous. Have a trip planned next year to Nepal but would love to go way down South. Is it for work or are you doing a package deal?

They certainly can be poke I became expert at stealth unwrapping presents and playing with them when Mum wasn't around as a kid.

Unfortunately a grand is too much for me at the moment. Have had a bunch of bills lately...almost had a heart attack when looking at electricity. Turns out they were estimating my usage for the last 12 months and I've used a lot more than they guessed frown

I guess the positive about going with the Canon is that I'll have some extra money to play around with for buying a tripod, case, extra battery.

Just a holiday mate. Missus and I don't have kids and are at the point where constantly working for the future seems pointless. Decided a year ago to do it so it will have been in the works for 2 years by the time we go. Just think it will be the most amazing place to lay eyes on really. I don't think you'll be disappointed with the 600d. It looks like a pretty good piece of gear. You'll def want a tripod though. The one that came with the kit is pretty basic but it will do the job to start with.

Ended up getting a 600D kit for $400. Couldn't go past the price in the end...would have preferred the pentax but I think the 600D will be more than enough for me to get started with.

Thanks for the help.

That's an awesome price really. Good to start with. Add some high quality lenses over time and when your ready( if you decide you are into it enough) you can upgrade the body. I look forward to seeing everyone up shots mate. Oh. Was that the the 18-55 or the 18-135 with the kit?

i still have 6 days to wait for mine. The missus isn't falling for it when i get up early n the morning and say merry christmas grin

Only the 18-55. Yeah will definitely be adding some lenses eventually, just want to understand all the numbers and settings first.

That's awesome Trav good to hear you're happy with it - was a bit stressful trying to choose which camera...so many brands/types. Don't forget about the $100 cashback if you haven't done it already.

Yeah I'm still hunting for a tripod. Don't want to spend too much but definitely don't want to get another flimsy one like I've got at the moment. Will let you know if I find anything good.

Would love to see any shots you guys want to share, will keep my eye on these forums.

Yeah mate thanks for reminding me haha I forgot about the cashback.

Straight away after the first time I used it I was blown away by the photo quality.

Just remember when you are looking for extra lenses down the track that the 600d has a 1.6 crop factor. So what ever the lens is multiply by 1.6 for that effective focal length. Eg. 10mm on the lens will actually give you a 16mm focal length.

Sorry mate missed your post. Went instore at Big W. Wasn't 100% sure about Kogan and the like - have got stuff from them before that had an Australian warranty but it took a long time to get a faulty phone replaced. Not sure if they've gotten any better or if it's different with cameras.

Thanks for that Brett. Still have a lot to learn.

Found my weatherproofing smile - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Pro-SLR-Camer...=item2a46dd68d9

Found this tripod that looks decent and doesn't break the bank - http://www.dx.com/p/1-5m-aluminum-alloy-digital-camera-tripod-5kg-load-max-15247#.VJPQ4V4ZeG8

The gorillapod ones look quite useful - http://joby.com/gorillapod/focus

Yeah. I am interested in the gorilla pad a swell. Looks like a sweet little piece of gear. And don't worry Chris. have just as much to learn. Last time I shot with an SLR it was still with film. 'Crops' as such did not exist and photoshop was a dirty word. I have been sucking up a heap of info off youtube. So learning as much as I can as quick as I can.

Also if you shoot in raw Photoshop wont recognise the raw format. So you will need to dl lightroom or something similar aswell..

This is the tripod I got. I like it does the job and reasonably priced.

There's a couple of ways to do it:

-One is to use the live view function, then zoom to x10, find something that is a good distance away and shift the focus ring around until it's perfectly focused. Then at that point make sure it's in Manual Focus and get out of live view. From that point on until you change the aperture or ISO. You'll need to redo the focus again.

-Or use one of the AF points to focus on a distant light in Auto Focus, then lock it into MF. Same thing applies to when you'll need to focus again. That's what I did here:
