Eddy- You really should've mate. The water was as clear as it gets!

We have an absolutely howling westerly here, so your southerly probably isn't a true southerly. This westerly would have to be gusting up to 60-70km/h I reckon. It feels like winter!

No sign of any Southerly on the South Coast until possibly Ulladulla, where the wind switched from W to S around 9:30 and the temp dropped from 25 to 22. But further South at Merimbula, it's still Westerly.

The BOM were right with the forecast for OH, which at 34.2 was about a degree warmer than most of Sydney. It was the hottest day there since Nov 1 when 36.5, which might end up the hottest day there this warm season.

The Airport had an odd spike of 3 degrees up to a max of 36.7 just before 3:00PM. I wonder if it was real.

If You Look At The Obs For Nobby's and Norah head you will see southerly winds for a short period with a small temp drop, in fact Nobby's is still under a southerly air stream, not strong by any means.

Not long after that wind change here, there is not a breath of wind, humidity going through the roof!!

G'day guys! smile

This will be my only post for tonight. I'm totally exhausted from a very long day out and I'll jump off the computer to give my eyes a rest afterwards, so here's my report for today (you'll see why I'm tired btw):

As Steve pointed out, yes we had westerly winds here on the Sapphire Coast. Today was pretty good, rated 7/10, perfect for travelling south of Merimbula to Pambula, Eden and Boydtown (including the Davidson Whaling Station, Boydtower, Haycock Point, the Pinnacles, and the Nethercote Falls). Lots and lots of walking involved! poke

Most of the time it was gloriously warm and sunny (around 20-25C), albeit humid and partly cloudy. Around lunchtime to mid-afternoon, while in Eden, we had a few brief, localised, heavy showers brush by. Other than that, a fairly uneventful day, topped off by a golden sunset over Snug Cove and Twofold Bay (with Mount Imlay in the distance) back in Eden! smile

Sounds like you had a good day ASF!! smile

That westerly has some gusts that are absolutely roaring through here! Sitting outside atm and before the gusts arrive,I can hear the constant roar of the eucalypts and casuarinas. It's crazy windy for this time of year. It's typical winter westerly gale. In fact, I don't think I have experienced a windier night in January.

I know the nearby obs don't reflect it, but gusts would have be about the 70 or even 80km/h mark here. No joke!! smile

Ahhhh, a little taste of winter in summer can be nice.

Lol cheers Sea-Mist! I feel so much better after a good night's sleep! smile

Another beautiful day has dawned on Merimbula. Still another possibility of showers later, but otherwise gorgeous blue skies and delightful sunshine! Currently around 22C. smile

I forgot to mention that after the rain stopped in Eden yesterday afternoon, the roads were all steamy! And there was a bit of minor flooding around, most likely from the day before. smile

Haha same here. I feel a lot better a decent night's sleep, although I'm still a bit sore! 5 full hours of bodyboarding does take it out of you!!

That southerly never made it up the coast, and as result it's mild and sunny here this morning. I reckon that SWer will turn southerly before lunchtime, even if we don't get the actual change. smile

I could go for another surf if I wanted to, but I'm too stuffed!!

Sydney has gone through the forecast max and is nearly 29C under a southerly. Weird

The early Westerlies gave our temperature a head start and the clear skies have allowed continued warming for sites that are less expised to Southerlies, like OH. The Airport, very much exposed to S-SE'ers, is 3 degrees cooler.

I expect it to cool, off soon, with Sydney's normal SE quarter weather, including cool, gusty winds, low-flying stratus and possibly light showers / drizzle to reassert itself in the course of the afternoon, by 6:00pm at latest. It appears that the BOM was expecting this to happen by about midday, so they were several hours too early.

Only about 23 degrees here at the moment. Nice WSW breeze and a pleasant night last night which was even better because the house stayed cool yesterday.

Next few nights going to be in the 11, 12 13 range of temps which will be pleasant. Days around 27 and 28 not bad at all.

Looks still like warmer temps next week though for most of us. That should get a few people excited. smile

I look at today and basically believe Summer is now half done (for here)already noticing a slight shift in the morning sun position re the house and windows. In another 2 or 3 weeks the sun shift puts less light/heat through the house and by mid Feb the house will start to cool ever so slightly. smile

The Westerlies should be keeping you coastal guys sunnier at the moment, enjoy!! smile

And enjoy the cooler weather Dave.

The Westerlies have finished here for the time being - might be back Saturday, but it's still very pleasant outdoors.

I note that the BOM retrospecively adjusted the forecast maximum for Sydney just before midday to what the temperature actually got to, 29. The've taken showers off the menu, but I still wouldn't be surprised if we got some light showers tonight.

I hope those westerlies make a welcome return on Saturday so I can go for another surf!!

Yeah it is actually quite a warm and pleasant day for a southerly day. It's about half sunny and half cloudy today- almost full blue sky (apart from a bit of scud) to the eastern quadrants. To the western side of the sky though, there's lots of cloud hanging around on the escarpment. I reckon we may pick up a tiny bit of drizzle in the evening. I think Sydney will stay dry but.

Today hit a top of 27C at around 10am, since the southerly it's hovering around a pleasant 25C.

Glorious weather here in Merimbula! The Sapphire region of the NSW South Coast is living up to its well-deserved reputation today! smile

Blue, mostly clear skies above with a lovely sunshine, gentle westerlies, currently around 24C.

Just got back from a quick swim at the beach, where the water colour is just beautiful! The water temperature is down a notch from my last dip a few days again, 20C. The waves weren't the best, but still fun and enjoyable! smile

I noted a dense later of cumulus and altocumulus along the eastern/southeastern horizon, maybe the backside of the low that came through a couple of days again? smile

Here's a thought experiment for everyone; if there were only westerly winds in Sydney during summer and no weather from the eastern quadrants, how hot would it be? Minimum temperatures would probably be around the same, since places like Walgett cool to about 18-20C at night. Days would probably average in the mid 30s, with many days above 38C. A day like yesterday with a 33-34C max would actually be BELOW average!

Our only source of rainfall would be from storms or NW cloudbands, which might bring the very occasional cooler day.

I daresay that if the above climate was reality, Sydney wouldn't be the metropolis it is today. Something to ponder for the heat lovers perhaps? Perhaps the capital would be somewhere around Bathurst under such circumstances, I'm sure Dave would have loved that smile.

If Summers on the NSW Coast were dominated by a Westerly flow, the sea breeze would still cool things off a bit. Sydney would probably have a Summer climate like that of Perth. If the Winter flow was Easterly, Winters would be mild and wet and Sydney would have a Mediterranean climate. it was Westerly all year, Sydney would be pretty dry.

There'd be all sorts of things that would be different, including Ocean currents, the pattern of systems like East Coast Lows, etc, so hard to sure.

Steve Triple 7, I'm taking it to the extreme and eliminating any flow from the sea whatsoever. I know that's unrealistic, unless you bump up SSTs to Persian Gulf like levels. Agree with all your other points. I think the Perth like temps would come to pass if the GDR didn't exist, with delayed seabreezes. We'd still have the troughs and rain, hence still humid subtropical but it would be a more dynamic summer I'd imagine with more hot dry incursions and the occasional coolish SW'ly as well. Winter would be a couple of degrees cooler which I would like.

Looks like we should continue the musings in the D2D weather thread, I can't see any more weather out of this.

So what do we have to do, blow up the GDR and move it down just off the coast of Bega?

Back to reality now, not a bad day considering we are in a southerly air flow, still no sign of any scud!!

Extreme imaginary scenario.. don't think it would ever happen though.

The smoke from the bushfires caused by the dryness of the air would drop the temps somewhat along with the low humidity (As was the case in late Dec 01 when we had about a week and a half of just westerlies)

Perth is a good comparison as they can get weeks of easterlies, however even that is interrupted by sea breezes and the winters are dominated by wild and wooly westerlies anyway, which in our case would be easterlies if we were to swtich.
