This is what is heading our way at Belmont

In the first 2 photos there was a clear slot forming with some rotation around it.

When the storm hit the wind was pushing the rain up road on the hill we live on.

Thankfully no broken windows this time around, the hail fell for quite a period of time though. The sky looked pretty tame above us before the hail fell, my only warning was hearing the rooves up the road of other houses getting hit before it finally got to us, it took several minutes of hearing the noise before we had hail actually start to fall at our place.
You've got to feel for those who had vehicles written off in the pre Xmas storm and likely had their new vehicles hit again today.

In one word - WOW!

That was amazing and scary all in one go. The hail did not seemingly want to stop!
Fifty cent size was around the biggest (20 cent size average). I got photos and video footage, just uploading now.

Here are two quick images of what is was like above us, 7 minutes or so before the storm appeared on the radar to be over Oxley. Ominous but not too bad. You can see a little of the green in the second image.

When I wrote my first post about my concerns it was about to explode on top of us here, the wind quickly picked up and was very gusty, then what sounded like a wall of raining coming could be heard in the distance. Then there was an odd whack, and I thought 'was that hail?' Then sure enough the heavy rain and small hail, then medium size hail then golf balls. Just crazy and the noise on the back deck eek

AND I cannot express how incredible it was to 'hear' the storm track away, the roar of the hail falling, so different to what I heard as it approached.

Here are some more images.. now just have to get the video stuff happening.

The larger pieces of hail that fell. I love how some was as smooth as a babies bum and some so jagged.

The beautiful rainbow afterwards

Here is the fluffy white bum of the storm some time after it left as I was outside checking on the baby birds and talking to the neighbours. Many cars in the street are hail damaged.

Some great pics there guys. Was watching your storms on the radar and they looked awesome. All the way from Ballina up to the SE corner.

I love the sound hail makes as it gets closer , sounds exactly like a frieght train moving through only it gets louder and louder as it gets closer and you just think 'uhhhh yeah... Here we go'

Went up to my usual spotting location along Birdwood Tce at Toowong and grabbed a couple of the storm this afternoon. Was probably around the Jimboomba - Tamborine area. Nice overshoot top. Greg

Video of exploding tower over Moreton Island, taken from the west from the mainland, soon after 6 pm ... and then the moon emerged from behind the clouds. Just beautiful.
It happened quickly and visibly over about 6 minutes. Video sped up x8. Have also included accompanying radar image.

Sure was a crazy arvo.... Solid bit of rain and some small specks of hail.
Plenty of very close CG's and then some really close flangs.
One seamed to hit in the park at the end of my street few hundred meters away and I was angry that I did have the HD video recording it as I normally do trying to get a close hit.
A few minute later I heard 2 ambulances. Didn't think anything of it.
This was the result , very sad for a new family... RIP

Missed a likely hailstorm (given the strength shown on the radar) here by about a kilometre. So close, yet so far! Only some very fat drops here at the house, not even enough to wet the ground. It was a very lightning active storm.
I only have an ordinary point and shoot camera, making night-time photography near impossible, but some lightning I was able to capture -

Nice pics everyone!! That would have sucked missing the storm by such a close margin. I can totally relate tho. But just think, what if it had really big hail. if it did, at least you avoided storm damage repair costs. wink

Yep a bit disappointing but as they say you can't win them all. I'm thinking probably small hail on the eastern side of town (Arakoon and around the golf course) and on the extreme coastal fringe around Smoky Cape / Little Bay possibly getting large hail -

Mother Nature doing a balancing act though, as this side of town (western side) has done better than the eastern side during Jan 20th's and Australia Day's heavy t'storms.

~~~
I guess it's not a bad way to end an already stormy January though. Very nearly snatching the crown off December for the stormiest month of this season (and had that storm been a kilometre further west, it would have).
Looking at tomorrow with a glass half full approach, perhaps the slight chance of a storm about locally here, and I'd think most likely later in the afternoon or evening if something were to eventuate.
Wynnum Nth 24 hour rain 28.2mm. I am about 1km NW of the official Wynnum gauge which for once has the same amount as me.
February off to a good start with one quarter of its average already registered.
Note attached pic of the storm falls. The Brisbane River appears to be a dividing line, with nothing registered to its north.
Nice pics and info 'guys' . Thanks for posting
Wonder if we will have another branch of the ECL outer arm today?
ACCESS suggests the wind pattern is different. Today we are embedded in the massive surface Tasman troughing
2pm surface stream from the south west from the high rather than the ECL
THe 500 hpa ( mid layer) is from the west at 2pm
and the
200 hpa upper layer is from the west.IN fact the sub tropicaljet streams over us
I think that means limited shear
ACCESS just showing a small tad of rain just coastal south of the border
Got these shots looking East yesterday afternoon. Suspect it was the tower over North Straddie referred to in earlier post .
I love those crisp updraft photos Ken and Footsoldier. Perhaps I should have stayed around Wellington Pt.
Sensational photos all! Thanks for sharing smile Although it was very humid we got zilch here over the border yesterday afternoon, but around watched an ominous purple cloud mass slowly drift further south and out of our reach...no hail at least!
