We certainly have frost; temp sat around the zero mark since midnight; -0.3C at the moment.
The small air movements we've had ( can't even call them breezes) swung from SE to W to NW to E overnight; none however big enough to stop the frost.

And the day isn't looking much warmer really.

Oh well Hi ho Hi ho, it's off to work I go ......

This morning saw our 2nd frost here so far this season albeit light (but not as many as what the Downs have had so far this autumn) - pic below.

Some of this morning's mins around the general region include -2.3C at Applethorpe, -1.8C at Wellcamp Airport near the outskirts of Toowoomba, 1.1C at Amberley and 5C at Archerfield.

I was out and about around the border ranges Wed and Thu and it was pretty brisk. Maxed out at 14.7 at Applethorpe with Apparent Temp of 7.5C at midday. Fair bit of low cloud came over on Wed afternoon and evening with some drizzle:

I have 3 thermometers and all are checked against the Davis expensive model and being an ex BoM Weather Observer these thermometers are exposed as close as possible to BoM specs. The air temp is taken at the regulation 4 feet AGL. They are accurate to within 0.2deg against the Davis model..

This morning's temps did not drop all that much further from the massive drop early last night, with the min being 7.4 deg and grass min 5.3 deg.

Maroochydore station was down to 4.9 at 2am, but climbed from then on to be 9.7 at 5:30am. My first thought was maybe an incursion of moisture from the ocean as winds are expected to turn onshore today, but the dew point only rose about a degree, so not sure if this played much role. Maybe there was a change to onshore wind just above the surface?

Good evening, loving this cold weather though as Kazz said I don't like it at 5am. Theres abit of cloud starting to creep back in. On another note check out this GFS forecast sounding for mid next week looks different...not sure what to make of it but looks iinteresting doesn't look like a storm set up but looks odd?. I just clicked just in front of the precip around Warwick but other areas looked similar. Very stable air? Lots of moisture strong straight line winds but GFS and ACCESS has been hinting at some precip next week. Anyway here's the 2 images.

ACCESS has an interesting event arriving for us ~20_21st may
Long wave troughing arriving from the west and intensifying into an , u guessed.. an ECL off coat of sydney
lots of rain / stormy perhaps as that broad trough passes
http://www.bom.gov.au/australia/charts/viewer/index.shtml

Oh holy schmolly . There is a cold pool as well. with a deep low to drive the moisture on to the mainland
VERY interesting

Steve: I had a quick look at that run of GFS yesterday and it looked like it was due to a combo of a strong cold front with associated rainband (the sounding looked like it was just behind the leading edge of the front, hence the saturated profile despite the strong W'lies and no CAPE), a stregthening area of low pressure to our south and a big pool of very cold air aloft associated with an upper low and upper trough extending north out of it.

On another note, here's some autumn-themed pics I took last Sunday around Toowoomba. As an added bonus, the skies were clear and blue which made for the ideal background for the autumn colours and temp got up to 18C by midday so was balmy in the sun:

Seabreeze (named after the pub? :P) If you don't mind me asking, how many years have you been recording rainfall at SWR?
Just wondering if you have noticed much discrepancy between what you record and what is recorded up at the lighthouse each year,
even now looking at weatherzone the recorded fall for the year is 892.9mm vs 1074.6mm for you.

I've been recording rainfall at SWR since 2002. My totals are quite similar so far this year to BOMs gauge at Fishermans Reach which is about 4kms away from here. If I remember correctly it is sitting about 30-40mm behind me. The main reason for the difference between here and the lighthouse so far this year is that it missed out on the torrential thunderstorms in January. Currently in Port Macquarie at the moment so I can expand a bit further on the differences when I get home later.

If we had constant sw-w winds until December the whole area would be a dust bowl well before then.

Beautiful Autumn capture 'Ken'.
Here is a snap of the Tweed river on sunset yesterday. Nothing dramatic but refreshing to sit and reflect
Snap taken by 'betterhalf' on mobile phone
Tonight cool wet and overcast with lots of onshore showers

The main reason for the difference between here and the lighthouse so far this year is that it missed out on the torrential thunderstorms in January. Just checked BOM's gauge at Fishermans Reach, they've had 1052.4mm for the year to date which is 22.2mm short of my 1074.6mm (Fishermans Reach is yet to report its 24hrs to 9am rainfall this morning, so the difference could even be a couple of millimetres less). Smoky Cape is the outlier out of the three, but a decent chunk of it can be attributed to the differences in rainfall recorded during the January storms. There was one particular day in January when several heavy storms moved over and I recorded 87.0mm, Fishermans Reach recorded 114.6mm, but Smoky Cape recorded just 23.4mm! A similar day later that month which produced several heavy storms, I recorded 60.8mm, Fishermans Reach 49.8mm, with Smoky only receiving 15.8mm.
Additionally with the gauge at Smoky being 117m ASL on an exposed headland, over the years I've come to suspect that it can under-read if there are persistent strong winds accompanying the rain (usually during ECLs), generally not doing so to a great extent but if you get a few of these type of days during the year it can add up a bit.
Measured it out on Google Maps, about 11kms between the Fishermans Reach gauge and Smoky Cape. From my house, about 5kms to Fishermans and approx 6kms to Smoky Cape (so slightly further than I thought it was): http://i.imgur.com/Jg8PGWp.jpg

Thanks for that! I've long suspected that fisherman's reach was possibly closer to what swr was receiving.
My pop records rainfall in a manual gauge closer to IGA and on a day that smoky recorded something like 20-30mm he recorded 100.
Another day a bit after christmas I was over the river for a swim, storm come over and absolutely dumped down, again smoky gave a fairly small reading compared to what Pop had in the gauge.
