Yeah, a much better explanation than my stoners rant, thanks WR smile. Wind generally takes the path of least resistance, in a nutshell.

Thicker high and middle level cloud has limited temps down here so far to 16 or 17. A few blue gaps appearing now, so a late spike of 19-20 isn't out of the question.

Looking forward to the cooler/colder change that is to follow. I wish I was at Kalkite. Dave will certainly see some snow. Temps already remaining below zero up high in the alps, and the coldest air hasn't even arrived yet.

Hoping the incoming cold blast will be enough to leave a good coating about the NSW Snowies, and it had better stay there for me on Wednesday when I fly from Melbourne to Sydney lol. And there had better be mostly clear skies over Northeast Victoria/Southeast NSW/ACT too! smile

The synoptic charts and ACCESS also have something interesting unfolding along the NSW coastline late next week, as the next cold fronts swing across Victoria and then exit into the Tasman Sea. Maybe my first proper ECL? smile

It's bad enough we get lots crap overcast days when the SE'er sloshes dank Tasman air over us. It's grossly infair that we have to put up with cloud bands moving all the way across the continent to seal us beneath concrete dome skies, especially when they deliver little or no rain.

Yep I share you guys hate towards those annoying NW cloud bands. The satellite picture tells the story really.. Look at it, just bellowing an endless supply of waste across NSW.

On a nicer note, I have been staying up the southern highlands on my grandma and pop's farm this weekend (15km SSE of High Range AWS and 10km west of Berrima) and this morning, I can actually see frost on the hills which is nice. The thought of frost didn't even cross my mind because I thought it was much too windy and cloudy.

The weather yesterday was cold, windy and around 10°C for much of it. Was good weather for gallivanting around the highlands in the car. Doing more of the same today and driving home to Wollongong this arvo with my pop.

So guys, if you's see a grey 200 series LandCruiser with L plates on it today, look out!! Hehehe.

Knot- Yeah, if we had the Great Divide moved, you would essentially get your SWer's more often.

hmm Plane propeller he he. 0 to 104.
Onya L's WR. Good one.
Warmish nite and hasn't warmed up much since.Sitting around 15. The wind is? Yeh u guessed it. A Nwester. Went beach fishin late yesterday arvo and it felt hot. Petty the jewies didn't come to the party after dark. Still, you can't go past a roarin blaze on the beach even though it wouldn't get crackin due to the damp driftwood from the day before.
Some light rain about from the grey sky

Don't be too harsh on these NWCB's chaps. They can deliver some pretty handy ppt to inland areas. Has been too much NWCB and not enough NWRB of late though, and for that I share your frustration. The Wimmera, in particular, looks forward to them for the autumn break, but so far its let them down.

On another note….looks like high country DaveM is going to have to put his snowshoes on! Look fwd to his reports on return!

A satisfyingly cool day with some drizzle. Forecast was for 18 but has peaked just over 15. Newie daytime av max for may should come in bout average now but thanks to cloudy nighs , partic past few nights the av min temp will come in about a degree above the average.

Sydney (OH) finished the month virtually spot on average for temperatures, 12.5 to 20.7*, verses 1981-2010 averages of 12.5 to 20.6.

Rainfall (109.8 mm) was close to average - 93.4% of the 1981-2010 mean. It was parcelled out in small packages and spread over many days - 16 out of 31. However, the distribution was odd:
  • 6 days had exactly 0.2mm, at least one of which (6th) looks doubtful.
  • Only 6 days scored 1mm or more.

Although it feels like it's been a gloomy month, the average sunshine hours (assuming that today was at or close to zero) came in just below average: 5.9 hours per day Vs 6.2. We did have a run of bright, sunny weather from the 6th to the 15th, which would have pulled up the average.

I expect that the month was pretty average for the rest of Sydney as well. The BOM will issue their report in the next couple of days.

* Assuming today's max of 15.0, the coolest since Aug 11 last year, holds. Even if it drifts higher during a cloudy night, that won't much affect the average.

Edit Reason: One doubtful 0.2.

I don't mind these kind of days in winter, sorry! If it went on for too long (like in the UK), I agree it would be depressing. These high cloud/inversion cold type days have been completely absent for a couple of winters by the way. Disappointing it wasn't a colder airmass, then we would have seen single figure maximums out west smile.

No need to apologise.

It's felt like Winter for a week or so now. A few cold nights, cool short days, the Autumn trees mostly finished.

The first and last days of Autumn this year make an interesting contrast - Sydney Olympic Park max:

Code:
- March 1: 37.1
- May 31: 15.0

It looks like the cloud has finally cleared. It's now a cool, even cold, damp night with a bright Moon and stars out. There might be a dense fog tomorrow if the cloud stays away. The humidity will stop it from getting too cold.

Good contrast there! In a true continental climate you could have a negative max at the end of autumn and a 30C max at the beginning (somewhere like Minneapolis).

The wind with this incoming front should stop any fog I reckon. We will probably get past today's max tomorrow, so bizarrely we will have a colder day preceding the front than after it. That's uncommon even for Sydney, which doesn't play by the rules of 850 temps.

Temp dropping now with the cloud blanket pulled off. Clear and crisp. Norah aws, which is about the same distance from my location as Nobbys aws, will post a slightly below av max temp for this may. Av min temp will be about average for may.
From morrow only 3 weeks to winter solstice. Good to see some doona nights comin up. Magnifique!!!!

That colder change is just should be through Sydney in the next couple of hours. Could be a brief shower with it.
Perisher has had almost 30 mm of rain, which would equate to 30 cm's of snow considering how cold the temps are down there.
It will feel very brisk today once the winds turn south west.
A real wintery blast, and Knotty Boy might finally get his south-wester.

The air is certainly cold. Goulburn dropped 4 degrees in the hour from 6 am - 7 am (5.5 deg's - 1.5 deg's) with a strong south westerly blowing.

Thanks for that picture Homer.

The change passed through Point Perpendicular just before 6:30, dropping the temperature from 13 to 9.

It's just passing through Albion Park now.
