Can you believe this? Another group of walkers scored a bullseye by hiking up to the summit of Mt Bryan along the Heysen Trail from the west side on a pre-planned walk on 11th, in falling snow!

Falling snow and excited visitors on Mt Lofty summit Saturday morning 11th July 2015. Please do watch the video in fullscreen to get the full atmosphere smile I was on the summit from about 630am to very approx 1030am. This snowshower lasted about ten minutes and tapered into rain mixed at times with what looked like sleet and perhaps some snowflakes for the next very approx ten minutes. There were no other snowshowers while I was there. There was some patchy hail lying on the ground prior to this snowshower which was picked up and inspected by many people. The wind while I was up there was much less than I predicted, which was very helpful for the assembled gathering some of whom had waited outside probably since before I arrived, the building being shut till I don't recall but perhaps 8am. If there'd been the expected half a gale I suspect some of us would have hypothermiated. When I arrived at 630 am I was surprised to find the gate to the drive up to the summit open and many cars parked in the summit car parks.

Please go to YouTube here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmAxWWN0TJw and watch in fullscreen. The embedded video below won't play fullscreen at least on my Firefox browser and it needs to be seen in fullscreen smile

Below: A link to a gif file of infrared satpic images from about 1am to 4pm Saturday 11th July 2015 in 1 hour intervals. Should open and play in your default browser. If it won't play on your computer please post letting me know.
Source: Brisbane Storm Chasers website http://www.bsch.com.au
4km resolution Infrared (IR) satellite imagery from MTSAT-1R for the Australian region. Images taken at 1 hour intervals. That should encompass the period when the snow fell except perhaps in the northern Flinders Ranges, Gammon Ranges and Freeling Heights where snow could have fallen after 4pm??
South Australian time CST 0103am Saturday 11th to 0403pm Saturday 11th.
GIF file size 6 mb. I have striven to convert UTC time to local CST time correctly - not so easy at 3am in the morning wink

Sharyn & I stayed in Mt Bryan township on Fri night.

On Saturday morning we left the township and headed to Hallett. From there we first went to the start of the walk to Mt Bryan from the western side. I think this was where John & Phil experienced their snowfall.

After experiencing nothing here, we went back through Hallett and on to the start of the eastern ascent walk via Mt Bryan East road an adjoining road which skirts the hills to the north of Mt Bryan, taking note of the high spots in the road. When we arrived at the eastern side of Mt Bryan, we experienced some sleet.

From there we headed back to a 670m ASL spot (#3), the furthest one from Hallett. Here we had more sleet. Then we went to spot number 2, again at 670m ASL. It began to sleet, but then turned to that characteristic wafting of snowflakes. This continued on for about 10 minutes, during which time the back window of the van was covered in snow.

As there were no more showers visible, we decided to head off on our trip. We had travelled about 3-5km on the Hallett to Jamestown road, when a large dark bank of cloud was visible to our SW. We hotfooted it back to spot #3 where we encountered Josh & his girlfriend. Shortly afterwards it began to snow again, more than previously at spot #2. It was falling quite solidly. It was incredible to see it being blasted up through a gully by the strong winds.

Sharyn was very happy to have experienced her first snow falling. Afterwards at spot #2, we ran into John & Phil and swapped experiences.

Later, when we were ca 5km from Jamestown, we saw a whitish covered hill with a tower, probably in a NNE direction from the town. After grabbing some lunch, we headed in that vicinity but if it had been snow, most of it had melted.

Some pics to follow when I have downloaded them. Apologies for the long post.

Very glad to hear you and Sharyn had such a successful snowchase Werner, and congratulations to Sharyn on her first experience of snow falling smile
As far as I know it's quite unprecedented in modern times to have a small flotilla of our snowchasers circling the Mt Bryan Range and all I think seeing falling snow too!

Here are some pics from our snow experience.

The back window of the van after the first 10 minute snowfall

Sharyn enjoying her first snowfall (at location #3)

Now it's getting interesting!

Individual snowflakes

Snow's still falling steadily but not enough to settle on the ground

A nice background shows up the falling snowflakes

The strong wind was blasting the snow through the gully in the background

Enjoy!

Were these pics taken on the road that goes around the northern side of Mt Bryan Werner? Pretty place to watch and photo snow falling through the trees wherever it is. Looks like it was quite a heavy fall at times (for SA anyway). Is it okay if I post about three of your pics into sasnows.com with due acknowledgements and also onto a page on Facebook whee I'm slowly gathering some videos and photos from the event before they disappear forever into the practically unreachable past.
Well done to you and Sharyn smile

Yes, these were taken on Banbury road to the north of Mt Bryan. Banbury Road runs principally in a NW-SE direction with either end joining onto Mt Bryan East Road.

Yes, you may post the photos as requested.

This video below I filmed on the Lofty summit on the morning of Saturday 11th July 2015 was probably taken when the falling snow was about at its densest. I'm pondering the question of how snowy are the flakes. I'm inclined to think it wasn't purely light and fluffy snow flakes. I think at this time in the shower it was more likely a mix of some fluffy flakes and some flakes that were either sleety snow ie the flakes had been partially melted and refrozen on the way down, or they formed in the cloud above not as fluffy floating flakes but as ice flakes of some kind, in the same way that hail is composed of ice and not crystalline snowflakes. Adding to the difficulty of coming to a conclusion is that the flakes were small as flakes go.
I was so preoccupied with getting a video record of the falling flakes while the shower lasted that I didn't even think to examine the flakes on my jacket at this time. However I do have one observer's opinion. During the video you can hear a man saying: "See how light and [unrecognised word] it is [pause] that's snow [long pause] only just."

Facebook page with shared videos and photos of snow in South Australia on 11th July 2015.

I've published a Facebook page titled "Snow South Australia 11th-12th July 2015" here https://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/pages/Snow-South-Australia-11th-12th-July-2015/1043999472297447
I'm sharing to this page videos and photos of snow in South Australia on 11th July 2015 as I find them on Facebook and anywhere else that shares to Facebook. The page is still a work in progress and entries are in no particular order. If you would like to add any images, videos or reports, or you would like me to edit an entry already on the page, you can post onto the page and I'll respond to it. By the way, I haven't found any reports of snow on 12th yet - I put 12th in the title to cover that possibility and the title now can't be changed smile

That's a good link - I've just checked it out and here's some info from that report.
The Bureau of Meteorology in late July 2015 published on its website an illustrated report or article called "A significant low-level snow event across eastern Australia" here http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/updates/articles/a011-eastern-snow-event.shtml . It's brief but provides a useful overall summary of the July 11th to 17th snow event across eastern Australia. If that link should break in the future, when published it was located in the section of the BoM website "Climate and past weather - News and reports" and its product code was IDCKGMTA00.

Of particular relevance to South Australia is "Figure 1: 11 to 16 July 2015 Mean Sea Level Pressure charts for 0Z (10am AEST)" and the following text:
"The period from 11 to 17 July 2015 saw a sequence of strong cold fronts affect eastern Australia. The most significant feature of this sequence was the occurrence of widespread snow outside of the Alpine region of southeastern Australia, extending along the Great Dividing Range from west of Sydney to the Granite Belt in southern Queensland. While few notable temperature extremes were observed during the period, the extent and depth of snow was remarkable by recent decades and resulted in disruptions at several major centres.
A sequence of cold fronts affects eastern Australia
After a mild start to winter 2015, the morning of 11 July saw the first of a sequence of strong cold fronts to affect eastern Australia (Figure 1). The first front brought early morning snow down to approximately 500 m in the ranges east of Adelaide and in the mid-north of South Australia. Light snow was reported as settling in the higher parts of the Mount Lofty ranges and further north around Hallett and Burra, and around Mount Remarkable in the southern Flinders Ranges."

I haven't seen any reports of snow around Mt Remarkable elsewhere on the internet - if you see any please post them into this thread. I'm not sure if I mentioned this before but from memory on MetEye what I assume was Mt Remarkable had a snow pixel on it for the longest period of any location on Saturday 11th. Mark was up there but two or three days early wink While on the subject of MetEye, I noticed that images grabbed from MetEye and posted onto the internet were missing the ranges north of Port Augusta and so didn't include pixels further north than Pt Augusta, so it pays to go to MetEye if you're thinking of snowchasing, rather than rely on grabs posted onto the internet.

Here's a link to an animated gif file of BoM's mean sea level pressure charts from 10am EST 9th to 10pm EST 12th July 2015 http://sasnows.com/2015/mslpgif/BoMmslp9to12July15gif.gif (source BoM Analysis Chart Archive). If it doesn't play when you click on the link, try opening it in QuickTime Player or another player.
To examine other BoM charts for the period at various levels of the atmosphere, go to BoMs Analysis Chart Archive at the time of writing located here http://www.bom.gov.au/australia/charts/archive/index.shtml .
"I quote: "This service provides free access to archives of Mean Sea Level Pressure (MSLP) Analyses, Upper Level Analyses and Tropical Gradient Wind Analyses, for the Australian, Southeast Asian / Western Pacific and Southern Hemisphere regions."
