So most of you will remember this being a fun little forum game originally run by member "WWW". I decided it was time we brought it back!

But this time I am hoping to take a lot of the work off by automating as much of the process as possible. I know it's a bit late to be starting it now, but I figured why not give it a shot, and if nothing else, it'll be great for working out functionality/bugs so it's nicely refined for next season smile

Entries will close automatically on the 1st of November. If a question is answered before the closing date, it will be removed from the competition to keep it fair. I've tried to modify a couple that have already happened, so we should be OK. Keep a copy of your answers somewhere for your own reference (they are provided in a nice list form after you hit the submit button), as currently you can't see them again once you leave the page.

The site is very basic at the moment as it was whipped up as quickly as I could to allow people to get their answers in, I'll add more functionality as time goes on, including the leaderboard, and make it a bit prettier.

If you come across any bugs or errors while trying to submit your answers, please do let me know. It's extremely time consuming testing all the possibilities, so I haven't.

You can only vote once, and you can not edit your answers once they are submitted, so re-check before hitting the submit button! If your answers become invalid due to a bug or something, I can fix them manually smile

Simply click here to see the questions and submit your answers! Lets see how this goes, and all constructive feedback welcomed grin

I also wanted to ask, would you prefer if other users answers were visible to everyone else (as they were when posted on the forum), or do you prefer them being hidden?

Must be doing something wrong!! I have tried 4 times but keep getting the error message (or some variant of it) "The 2 Day field may only contain a numeric value". But i have only entered numbers in that field!

Odd .. is that the only one it's complaining about? Should accept a value of 1-31. If it's still complaining fling me a PM with your answers and I'll add you manually until I can find the culprit frown If it gives you an error, just click back in your browser and your answers should still be there.

My apologies, like I said, far too many options to check for bugs myself, but hopefully I can get them sorted quickly, bear with me smile

If anyone else has errors while submitting please feel free to just PM your answers (and let me know what the error was, please).

It should all be made visible. Part of the fun is comparing what others have done.

Yeah, I have a similar feeling about it too. Means of course others can use your answers to kind of get an average, but in the end it's all still just guessing for a bit of fun. Will also mean you can review your own answers on the site too. I'll work on the functionality and see what becomes of it smile

Why not wait until November 1st and make them visible once it closes?

Worked that time. I used the up and down arrows instead of typing a number, don't know if that would make a difference.

Strange indeed. Possible maybe you're using a different character set and the validation didn't like it. Something I'll look into anyway smile

Answers are set to go public on the 1st of November and you'll be able to access them through the Entries page by clicking on usernames (and hopefully just by hovering over them, for newer browsers). smile

Wish I'd started it earlier so it wasn't quite as rushed. Only came to mind yesterday morning and one of my servers died half way through, so I've surprised myself by getting it at least partially functional in that time smile

There is now a complete list of the questions on the "answers" page, if you wish to copy them to work on and submit later. This page will contain the actual answers as they happen. Unfortunately those I'll still have to keep an eye on and enter manually, so please let me know if an event happens and I miss it! smile

Can you use the little up/down arrows to select a number instead perhaps? Still not quite sure where the issue is.

Edit: oh 17 doesn't have arrows. Hum. I'll look into it today but PM me your answers if you'd like and I'll enter it manually.

Just realized the error you're getting is from the first validator, not the 2nd like Firepac's. Make sure you're not entering spaces or anything that's not a - or . or a number. If it still doesn't work, just shoot me a PM smile

Also had a look and Darwin has possible thunderstorm on their forecast for tomorrow. Don't make me remove a question please!! poke

Scoring system done, averages will now display on the Answers page once entries close, and the leaderboard works (but will be empty until a question actually gets answered), and prettied a few things up.

Very close to being completely finished functionally grin

For those wondering how the competition and scoring works, take a look at one of the previous competitions. The scoring system is basically identical, except for a slight change with Q16 (landfall does not affect score): http://forum.weatherzone.com.au/ubbthreads.php/topics/1205882/1/Annual_Tropics_Competition_201

No problems Things, but I'm not going to miss out on a bit of fun in the sun! So I'll play from the side-line! Here's my tips... smile

Q1 The date the first rainfall (of 1mm+) falls at Port Hedland --> 12th December
Q2 The date the first thunderstorm is recorded in Darwin --> 6th November
Q3 The date of highest temperature maximum at Marble Bar --> 25th December of 49.9C
Q4 The date the first Australian-named Tropical Cyclone forms --> 5th March
Q5 The region the first Australian-named Tropical Cyclone forms --> Western
Q6 The lowest pressure attained by the first Australian named cyclone (in hPa) --> 982hPa
Q7 The date Townsville records its first 50mm+ daily rainfall total --> 23rd March
Q8 The date the monsoon arrives to the Australian mainland --> 20th March
Q9 The date the first land-falling Tropical Cyclone crosses the Australian mainland --> 5th March
Q10 The location the first land-falling Tropical Cyclone crosses the Australian mainland --> Kimberley
Q11 The severity category of the above cyclone as it makes landfall --> Cat 2
Q12 The Southern Oscillation Index (S.O.I.) figure average over the 6 months of Spring & Summer --> -15.5
Q13 The highest maximum temperature recorded at Broome (C) --> 40.5C
Q14 The total number of Tropical Cyclones that occur within Australian waters this season --> 3
Q15 The total number of land-falling Tropical Cyclones this season --> 1
Q16 The name of the season's most intense Australian-named Tropical Cyclone --> Stan
Q17 The total rainfall recorded in Mackay this wet season (mm) --> 744mm (assume 6 months from November to April)
Q18 The number of 25mm+ daily rainfall totals recorded at Cairns --> 9
Q19 The location that will record the highest daily rainfall total --> Tully
Q20 The highest daily rainfall total (mm) at the above location --> 245mm

OK, I have confirmed a storm was indeed recorded at Darwin airport yesterday afternoon!

Congrats to SimmoFNQ and EddyG for nailing it to the date!

Check your results here: http://nqlasers.com/WZ_Comp/results.php

Note the rank change is quite dramatic as there was no previous rank smile

Oh, and it worked, woo! grin

I had a discussion in mid October with someone that lives up there and she reckoned it would go off before the comp started. I threw a whacky one out just incase they missed the centre for a couple of weeks and had a fair inkling many would go November 1st . Sometimes you have to take risks Bello smile

Early monsoon during a strong El-Nino season, hahahahaha, nobody would have picked that. And if the more reliable models are right then the N & C QLD should be in the firing line for it as well.

So, it appears Townsville officially recorded over 50mm on the 29th of Dec at 7:30am, finally some half decent rainfall for the area! That said there didn't appear to be a whole lot of movement on the leaderboard this round (except I'm not at the bottom anymore grin ) smile

I have noticed there seems to be a bit of inconsistency with the rank change value, bear with me on that.

Cheers to Nerd65 for pointing it out to me, was a bit caught up with our own weather it'd seem grin

Q4 has been answered, and should be closely followed by Q1, 9, 10 and 11 grin
Q5 can't be answered until later in the season as scores depend on where the next cyclones form.

Wow, I'm not totally failing this time crazy

Congrats to croccrew for holding his ground at #1, Simmo for moving up to #2, and EddyG making it into the top 3 grin

So the remaining answers for the 2015/16 season are in!

For Q3, we had Marble Bar reach a maximum of 47.4C on the 5th of January.

Raquel was technically to be the first name for the 2015/16 season, however the BoM later deemed that Raquel would fall into the 2014/15 season due to forming on the 1st of July.

Stan followed, answering the Western region for Q5, and also Q6 with a minimum pressure of 975hPa. Stan peaked at Category 2 for landfall, answering Q11.

The SOI average for Spring to Summer months, September 2015 through to Feb 2016, was -15.3

Q13, the highest recorded maximum in Broome, was 41C on Sunday the 10th of April.

This season was one of the least active in reliably recorded history, with only 3 named systems in total, for Q14, and only 1 land-falling system, Stan.

Stan also took the prize for the most intense cyclone of the season.

Mackay recorded a total of 1255.2mm of rainfall for the months Oct-Apr at the Mt Bassett station.

Cairns Airport recorded 13 days of rainfall totals exceeding 25mm.

And finally, Q19 and Q20 .. the highest daily rainfall for the provided locations was Townsville! Having recorded 124.8mm on the 16th of March, followed closely by Darwin at 122.8mm!

And so, we have our winners! Congrats to LD4811 for taking first place, followed by Nerd65, and 3rd place, Seabreeze!

I'd like to thank everyone who entered for giving me a chance to trial out this new method of running the competition. It has always been handled by one of our great members "WWW" who had the time consuming task of collecting entries, data, and calculating the answers. The goal of this online based system is to take a lot of the time consuming elements out of the competition, to allow myself (and potentially others) to run it easily into the future.

Please note that some of the answers have been calculated a little differently to how they have been in the past, which can be seen on the Information page smile

I have a bunch of ideas for it next season, and I'd welcome any input you may have in regards to usability or potential features you'd like to see!

Check out your final result here!

Congrats LD4811 and also to Nerd65 and Seabreeze.
Must admit I'm pretty happy with 4th considering the underwhelming season and the random nature of success with any of the questions.
Look forward to the season 16/17 comp. I enjoy researching the season's potential at the beginning and then watching it all unfold over the months.
