Long time lurker; first time poster.

Quick edit: this is regards to the image posted with the comment "Looks like Himawari 8 resolves ocean currents as well though it is only in a horizontal band. Wonder what's that all about?" found on page 1 of this thread.

By the looks of this image, it's the Bonney Upwelling - or the Great South Australian COastal Upwelling system; one of only a few in the world and one of the largest.

It can extend from Ceduna, SA to Portland, Vic. I lived in Portland most of my life before moving to Adelaide, and we actually have a festival for the system.

It's an amazing system, bringing all sorts of aquatic life up as nutrient rich waters churn around.

More info can be found wikipedia at this wiki link.

Great! Thanks for that, it's amazing some of the features that are to be seen in the Himawari-8 imagery.

The very powerful Typhoon Meranti approaches the Chinese coast after skimming Taiwan - with another in tow it seems!

Two more typhoons, the second (No.22) a "super typhoon", they have been spinning up there regularly for a little while now.

Can pick those days along the Victor and SE coasts during summer when the up welling is working. Water temp drops dramatically, 40 degrees out of water....somewhat less in. You can go from boardies surfing to bringing back the steamer.

The system and trough that hit South Australia the early morning of 28 Dec 2016 has shifted to the east. The actual cyclonic part has moved out but the trough remains - plenty of big clouds this IR image shows, lightning as well as seen on the lower left insert. Perhaps some impressive desert falls...

Yeah, it's great isn't it!

Most image I get from:
http://rammb.cira.colostate.edu/ramsdis/..._true_color.jpg
Also:
http://rammb.cira.colostate.edu/ramsdis/online/himawari-8.asp

BOM has their version:
http://satview.bom.gov.au/

This site is pretty good:
http://himawari8.nict.go.jp/

I also like this site - the images are from a lower earth orbit satellite:
https://lance2.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov/imagery/subsets/index.php?project=aeronet

Enjoy!

Lots of technical info about Himawari-8 (&9) here:
https://directory.eoportal.org/web/eoportal/satellite-missions/h/himawari-8-9

Himawari-8's twin, Himawari-9, was successfully launched into a geostationary transfer orbit on Nov-2 last year. It will act as the backup until 2022, when the two satellites switch roles and H-9 becomes the operational satellite, and H-8 becomes the backup.
