Yes I love the idea of that Seabreeze, especially the table of contents.

Table of contents sounds good. Will make it easier to find old posts. Great idea Seabreeze.

Today is the summer solstice. After today the days will get a little shorter each day, although the latest sunsets in Sydney are on the 7th and 8th of January.

Some decent gusty showers on and off here all day, and more to come tonight looking at radar! Glad there’s some warmth forecast next week, will be a pleasant change.

No rain here since before dawn. It was a cool, fairly cloudy day with sunny periods. It's now a bright, full Moon night with scattered cloud, although the radar shows showers about.

It looks like a post-Christmas hot spell is on the cards, with GFS most bullish, showing 27 degree 850 temps near Sydney on the afternoon of the 31st. The models do seem to be converging, although the others are not as extreme as GFS.

I might start a heat thread, depending upon how it looks in a couple of days.

Not exactly weather related but has anyone else noticed that there are no Christmas beetles this year?

We usually get a lot of them here in the few weeks before Christmas but I have not seen a single one.

Hey, that’s so true! Now you mention it! Haven’t seen a single one. Or a Bogon moth either. Wonder if the beetles make an appearance next week when the warmth arrives?

I’ve noticed a long term decline, there’s less than 10% of what there was 10 to 15 years ago. 2 main factors are urban sprawl taking away habitat, and a dry winter/ spring this year (November at least, not withstanding the large 100mm fall towards the end of the month). It’s very local, some areas may have none, others will have millions.

Re Christmas beetles - I've noticed a decline over the years. I also can't recall seeing any this year. In the last few years they seem to have become rare. I think that they are less common in the more built-up areas but even so you still saw them there. When I was a kid in Sydney's Western suburbs where there'd be thousands of them. You needed insect screens on open windows and doors (no one had air conditioning) otherwise the house would be full if them.

---

Cool and partly cloudy this morning, actually the 'coldest' morning in about a month, down to 13-15 in most of Sydney. I heard some heavy rain last night. I see that Sydney OH picked up nearly 8 mm in the small hours, Chatswood 4 mm. It seems to have been mostly restricted to the coastal fringe.

We have had quite a few beetles lately. Amazing how they get inside the house through gaps in the verandah door.
Not as many this year as in some years but more than other years. I haven't noticed a declining trend as such.

Despite the fact that it is a mostly clear and sunny morning we still just managed to get a brief shower.

Last 2 carbon copy days of 25C, very pleasant for this time of the year for those west of the coast, before things start on another warming trend tomorrow.

Massive decline in the Illawarra. When I was a kid (50 years ago now), I would only take me 5 mins to collect a jar full of Christmas Beetles to empty down the back of my sister's dress.

Now..like many, I have not even seen one !

I remember running around as a six year old at my dad’s 40th (he turned 67 this week) collecting an empty plastic bottle of them - attracted by the outdoor lighting they had up. One or two a night these days

This year these beetles have been very rare, maybe for some weather related reason such as the drought. Usually though even in the past few years if my verandah light is on there is usually a bunch that sit onto there.

Water temp at Newcastle (Merewether beach) has dropped 2° in last few days to 19.4°. Might be more by end of week with NE’r set to continue.

Here's my summary of Sydney for December, showing Min, max, rainfall and comparison to average:
Code:
Sydney OH 19.3 26.8 95.0 +1.0. +1.3 120%
Bankstown 17.6 29.7 114.8 +0.8. +2.2. 170%
Richmond 17.0 31.0 101.2 +0.8 +2.1 148%

In summary, a warm, wet month with above average rainfall.
Minima about a degree above average.
Maxima we're about a degree above average near the coast, 2 degrees inland.
There were no very hot days on the coast, but the outer West finished with a week-long run of very hot days.
Sunshine hours at the Airport will finish at 8.0 following a run of almost cloudless days from Christmas. This is close to average.

I've made guesses about today's maxima, so final average maxima might be 0.1 different.
I used 1971-2010 averages for OH to make them comparable to the other sites.
