Morning all

Cracked 29 around 1pm yesterday.

Despite last weeks rain, had 62mm here, the grass is crunchy again already.

I see BOM are forecasting 35 here on the West Coast tomorrow.

Hope we get something out of Sunday's forecast rain.

Hot! The forecast high for Ouse is 38C tomorrow. The official Tasmania record for December is apparently 39.2 at Hobart Airport in 1998. Not sure why Hobart's 40.7 in 1897 has been swiped from history - not from a stevenson screen I suppose?

yep: There is a record of 40.6C set in Hobart on the 30th Dec 1897 still appearing in the climate stats section (see below) - is that the one you meant or another figure?

Anyway here's a couple of GFS-generated maps with fire risk on the left hand side and temps on the right hand side:

Ken yes that's the one. I was under the impression Hobart had a stevenson screen by 1897. It's not a rouge reading either, there was a 40.0C reading before it and 37.9C on the 31st - extreme heatwave in south-east Australia at time.

Now this is what BOM have as the Tasmanian record list

Curious really. I sent thru a request for an answer still awaiting a response.

Definitely seems to be incorrect, didn't Tassie do 40 last summer?

What about the 41.8 in Jan 2013??

Something whacky with that list above.

That list I put up just covers December.

Seems hot in the west and there's a seabreeze in Hobart. Long way to go to get to 38C in the upper Derwent valley.

Friendly Beaches on Tasmania's east coast made it to 39.8C - an easy record for them but they have only been in it since 1998. I am taking Hobart's 40.0 and 40.6 in 1897 as legitimate measurements eventhough they are not on the Tasmania record list.

If they are not right for some reason then today's maximum is a new December high for Tasmania

Didn't think there was a 39.8 in it, impressive, oppressive number.

Had a seven day run of 30, 26, 29, 30, 34, 32, 33 in Westbury. warmest week I've had in a while.

Cheers Yep - my bad!! smile

Snowies, that is a very warm week for there.

Looking at the models, GFS playing with the idea of big rains on Sat 26th. BUT it looks a bit outlandish compared to EC & Access.

Interestingly CMC is a little optimistic too.

Hope the rains eventuate. smile

BOM has told me that the state and national extreme lists only cover readings from 1910 onwards. It doesn't matter whether a record was from a Stevenson Screen prior to 1910 or not, they don't include them. I don't really get that but what can you do. They say it's for consistency.

Hobart's 40.0 and 40.6 in 1897 were from from Stevenson Screens.

Now it's easier for them to say it's warming, "we took the hottest records out" should be a rider.
