G'day and bula everyone! smile

Summer is waning fast, and the 2016 Autumnal Equinox is only about 4 weeks off! Won't be long until Roaring Forties start kicking into gear, and enormous, powerful winter storms start ripping north across the Southern Ocean from Antarctica en route to Southern Australia! smile

Dreading the chill that lies ahead, but hoping for a better chance at seeing some snow in coming months. smile

WZ predicting an early start to the snow season with a dusting at Uluru this Wednesday crazy
http://www.weatherzone.com.au/news/uluru-could-see-first-autumn-snow-on-record/481283
With wednesdays forecast temps in Alice Springs 17C to 35C and no 'moisture laden cold front' in sight, looks like someone at WZ has been on the happy pills!

I'm really excited too at this early season snow prospect. With the reported wind direction out of the south east, and my elevation being that of Uluru, I should expect some snow a day or so later as this system tracks east. Whoohooo!! laugh

Gave a few of us something to smile at LG smile

First thing I did (remembering it was April 1) was check the week forecast for The Alice, temps all high 30's all that week - not especially conducive for snow. grin

We've all fallen for something at some stage - just your turn. grin

I was very disappointed the snow didn't eventuate, there or here.

To make matters worse, there was no explanation from the WZ forecaster as to how he got it so wrong.

Where is the accountability these days.....sigh.

By the time winter rolls around this year I will at long last have gotten my licence and with it comes the hope of some snow chases.

Quick question for the veterans out there. Do I need a 4WD or just some snow chains for my Toyota Corolla Hatch?

Locke, I take it your in Brisbane. If so forget about Stanthorpe and those area's and just go for Guyra. Time your chases so that you arrive before the snow falls. You won't need chains as if it is thick enough they close the highway anyway. I have never used chains due to me timing my arrival before snow falls. Be prepared to take any day off work. I normally wait til I see a window of snow fall that will enable me to stay overnight. Last year I left Brisbane at 8pm as the snow looked like it would start pelting down at 1am. Got to Guyra at 2am but I was fine. The following night I got snowed in. Highway was closed til midday on my final day and got out.
When venturing out you will only need to walk around. but occaisionaly I went for a drive to get to the Caltex up the road. Caution should be taken and if you do 5km/h you'll be right ( This is when the highway is covered)

Ps I just drive a Toyota Tarago and its fine ( Fantastic chase car as it is high off the ground and very roomy smile The best chase cars are the SUV sized cars. Something that is high off the ground like the SUV's. But really unless you are going off road driving in the snow I can't see the point in spending doe on a 4X4.

Hi Locke

Front wheel drive lancer

All wheel drive WRX

I have traversed snow up to 14cm in both of these vehicles without chains needed. I do advise against rear wheel drive vehicles in the snow as they are a lot heavier in the back and promote the rear end sliding out and it's very hard to get back under control even with traction and stability assist. I do advise a manual is better suited to frosty and snowy conditions as taking off in Second assures no wheel spins and maximum traction.

Grip, low torque and a suitable drive shaft (Front Wheel drive or All Wheel drive) will get you to and from safely.. Goodluck out there!

Good advice Warren and welcome to the forum.
That Rexy is a nice looking car. In fact I wouldn't mind any Subie for that matter; they're all meant to be pretty good for the snow too.

Thank you smile. They are excellent for the snow, Subaru and Mitsubishi are unrivaled.

As for this years snow season... I have my doubts for much snowfall for the central tablelands, but who am I to decide? Heat like this usually brings on some wicked thunderstorms, and as long as there is thunderstorms... There is moisture, and if there is moisture.... There is snow somewhere! It's been roughly +6 Degrees higher than the average April temperature where I live which is just at the base of Penrith and there has been an unusual decrease in thunderstorm activity.

I wish I could say the calm before the storm? Bring on the snow!

Hi everyone,
It's that time of the year when i return to the forum to annoy you all. This year however there has been some changes! I am no longer based in Tamworth. I can no longer give updates around MT Kaputar, Nundle, or Walcha.

Now I'm on the not so chilly Central coast and look forward to finding where is in driving distance. The old Suzuki Sierra is getting bored of the humidity and so am I! Where are some good places to head from the Gosford area?

Thanks in advance guys and girls.

Hi Locke
as for snow chains it depends where your chase takes you. In some areas it is the law to have snow chains with you and penalties apply if you fail to comply. I chased all the way down through the Alpines 3 years back. For the price and the area they take up I would throw a set in and follow the manufacturers directions as to speed etc.

I have just noticed for VIC "Diamond pattern chains are now mandatory for all vehicles entering the Mount Hotham Alpine Resort. Ladder chains, spider chains and snow socks are not permitted to be used at any time. - See more at: http://www.mthotham.com.au/plan-my-trip/travel-to-hotham/by-road/chain-fitting-info/#sthash.D2FFz0Lf.dpuf"

Some hints on snow driving and chains can be found here.

Loving the satellite... and the charts and models! Winter is on its way to Southern Australia (five weeks to go until June 1st), and the first cold fronts and winter storms from Antarctica are now on the move in the Southern Ocean, marching north! grin

Little sign of any snow for the Australian Alps and the highlands/ski resorts of Tasmania at this stage; the air appears to be still too warm, so any precipitation will mainly be rainfall. But this is just the start; hoping the high pressure area we've been trapped under for who knows how long can be forced north soon and allow the cold air to come flooding in from the south. smile

With ACCESS having several intense cold fronts lined up over the coming 10-day period, it's only a matter of time before the first snowfalls finally arrive. And after nearly 7 years since I was playing in the Sewlyn Snowfields near Cabramurra in the NSW Snowy Nountains, I am hoping to hit the ski fields this year, especially since my fiancee is coming out from Fiji! I can no longer settle for merely seeing snow from off in the distance, as I did when flying from Melbourne to Sydney last June. smile

Indeed. Ta for the heads up DB! The usual downgrades notwithstanding, we look to be heading into a much more wintry type pattern than just a week or so ago. Mind you, the models haven't really downgraded this juicy low due over the weekend and into early next week, so predictability may be on the improve.

Has everyone noticed the high pressure systems are way north this year where they are supposed to be. This could be a big winter for the southern states if this continues. Not too sure what this has as a reflection of going to nina or if this will continue. In a normal winter the highs are supposed to be at the Brisbane latitude's, which they are at the moment. Keep it up.

Snow is on the ground after some good snowfall throughout last night, settling above 1700m, falling down to 1400m.

Very noticeable PC. Quite a rapid shift into the central latitudes. The recent transition down here to the more typical wintry set up has been quite marked. smile

Agreed! Don't want those highs slipping too far south of Brisbane's latitude now and robbing Melbourne of its winter storms now do we! Lol wink

My fiancee who lives in Fiji is as thrilled as I am to see snow blanketing the High Country via social media, including Mount Hotham, Falls Creek, Thredbo, and Charlotte Pass! Assuming her visa is processed in time, and the winter storms continue to roll into Southern Australia from Antarctica (and the La Nina predicted for the Pacific in coming months takes shape and can offer a helping hand), she and I will definitely hit the Australian Alps, most likely in July/August! smile

Personally I'd love to take her to the Selwyn Snowfields near Cabramurra, but that's dependent on whether we make it to Corryong, Northeast Victoria, and even then there's no guarantees we'll make it there. I can't take my car to the snow, and my parents may not take the only car that has snow chains. poke

As a back-up plan, I've set my sights on the ski resorts closer to Melbourne, mainly Lake Mountain near Marysville, and Mount Buller, as well as to a lesser extent Mount Baw Baw.

But can anyone offer me any information about any snow tours (whether day tours or for a couple of nights, etc) that operate from Albury/Wodonga, servicing the Mount Buffalo, Mount Hotham, Dinner Plain and Falls Creek? I found just one (shown below), but further info would be much appreciated, cheers!

Also, any information on ski tours that operate to the NSW Snowy Mountains from Canberra? Vinaka! smile

Awfully quiet in this thread at present!
Looks like the first decent front of the year and a possible ski season kick starter next Friday into the weekend. It's a fair way out but some encouragement is in the models.
Hopefully we can get some discussion going as the models ebb and flow and hopefully start to align.

AccessR has 850hPa temps flirting with a brief dip into sub-zero territory later today over the far south coast of WA. Not quite in the zone for a Bluff Knoll snow dusting, but not bad numbers for for this time of year.

Hmmm I don't have my Forester any more, only a 2 (sometimes 1) wheel drive!!

Can't see enough snow to give me any issues though. Might go for a drive too if it looks intereting enough. Car's too clean, may as well dirty it up a bit grin

The forecast seems to have backed off a bit for Saturday around the Shooters Hill area.

Well done Homey!!!! grin

I have a Ford G6E and I love it, however these days they don't have a limited slip diff, they rely on traction control instead.

In slippery conditions give me a limited slip diff any time.

It spins up one wheel too easily. Of course sometimes I do give it some encouragement whistle

Last year the forecasts were a bit off aswell... Around this time, it forecasted rain but I went anyway and was pleasantly treated to atleast 2cm on snow on the ground and some intense snowfall!

The forecast seems to have improved a bit. The BOM has snow falling down to 1200 m instead of snow showers to 1200 m . Willy weather has Oberon with rain 5 to 10 mm. WU weather has rain 7 mm for Oberon. Been watching another forum as well as Blackheath weather on FB . These guys as well as the guys on here know what they are talking about ( me excluded ) .When those guys get excited, I get excited . Lol . It's starting to look like an early morning run up to the CTs tomorrow. We will stay overnight as well. It would be good to see the first fall of the year.

Not sure, Meteye has removed most of the pixels in the area, only Shooters has a purple square now!!

I work in the morning, will have to see how it looks as the morning unfolds smile If you see a red falcon up there, it'll be me!!

I think you're right Cheers, there will be another chance. Doesn't really look like there's much in it, but there's no doubt that it has snowed there (Shooters Hill) this morning but probably only 1 or 2cm right now.

I followed through with this system. The snow was very minor .

It mainly snowed at 7:30 and a short burst at 8:00 and another very minor burst of sleet at 10:25.

Either way, it was something! But no cm's to report unfortunately.

The next low and cold front looks to be peaking across SWWA and it will be a decent cold/wet outbreak right across the SW land division.

Good chances of a few cms of settled snow on the higher parts of the Stirlings.

Might have been a little about. Cant confirm at this time. Remarkable thing about the system that passed through was the very meagre rainfall totals in the stirling range region -well spotted a day or so prior by the bom.

Still very cold air aloft which will persist for a day or so yet but without much prospect of ppn in the right places.

It was pretty good when I was up at Mt Selwyn last Thursday and Friday. Snowed in the afternoon on Thursday and heaps of snow on the ground. Friday was heaps warm with snow melting rapidly unfortunately, but conditions couldn't be better with clear sunshine all day.

Snowy Mountains on track to reach its average winter snow peak depth I think. It's been a struggle to reach the 60 year average in the last few years.

Yes it really had been a case of hot then cold. The climate is becoming more intense and certainly allot more random these days. Maybe the days at looking at averages are over ? In the future we may gauge events by peaks and lows ?

What is the average winter snow peak anyway? There's been a lot of damage over the past few days due to this unseasonal warmth and rain. Hopefully the next 4 days of snow will make up for it though.

The average peak is about 172cm. I can't remember the exact figure. The weekly readings are by Snowy Hydro at Spencers Creek, I understand it gives a reasonable guide to Alpine snow conditions. There has been a lot of melt this week you are right, down to 95cm, but maybe another 50cm on top of that from tomorrow thru until the next measurement at the end of next week.

Well, looks like SAM index is forecast to go relatively strongly negative towards the end of the month, that coupled with the continuing negative IOD and hopefully the snow season will end with a bang.

Snow depths analysed to the nth degree by http://gergs.net/gallery/.

Total carnage up in the resorts now. Rain, floods and wind damage. A lot of people will be hoping the season finishes with a bang.

Does anyone know how long the lag is between when SAM goes negative and South East Australia begins to feel the affects of the westerly belt shifting further north?

It looks like SAM is forecast to go the most negative it's been in winter so far. SAM (AAO)

Been watchig that SAM through the winter with interest. From my perspective you can already see the result of the swing in SAM with the two week dry forecast across much of Aus....read before that there is a delay of a week or so with cold fronts...but then you will also need the LWT to play ball with SE Aus to see a good result.

Wow at the SAM forecast right now! History says the lowest index was -2.5 in late 2002 and the current forecast looks like it could go even lower, perhaps reaching very close to -4, which should do wonders for our ski fields. Just need the LWT to play ball and we could get smashed.

Maybe a little snow on the Stirling Ranges or even the Porongorups today? Albany's temp dropped to 5.6°C at 10:49am with a band of showers and storms, which moved NE towards Porongorups and Stirlings.

The front currently blasting its way across SWWA looks like delivering some more snow to the Bluff and possibly other peaks of the Stirlings. AccessR has 850hPa temps well below zero through today for Mt Barker, which has a forecast max of only 9deg.

Albany's hovering around 7°C with the radar showing showers passing through; so one would think snow is a good chance on Bluff Knoll, maybe even a little sleet on the Porongurups.

Light dusting on Bluff knoll - Monday 8th( afternoon into evening). 2nd hand account suggests it may’ve been 1-2 cm after initial snowfall in the afternoon. I didn’t summit until pre-dawn Tuesday and by then cover was quite patchy.

Another light, patchy dusting on BK overnight Wednesday the 17th - similar cover to last week’s, but temps were colder - at or below freezing. Fingers crossed one of these will jag a lot more moisture before winters end.

If only there was an area like the Oberon Plateau over Albany way, you'd be laughing. Fronts have been peaking over SW WA all winter, even Geraldton is tracking much cooler than Sydney.

I've been to Cape Leeuwin- a wee bit windy but otherwise a great climate for the heat haters among us. Margaret River is exactly due west of my suburb in Sydney, yet the average temp is a fair bit cooler.

Also, Albany was the first burgh of European settlement in the Quokka state- why oh why isn't it the capital? smile.

Yes Albany much cooler than Perth.

My son lived at Augusta WA (near Leeuwin) for a year or more - usually cool and windy and often damp.

I reckon Dunsborough would be a pretty decent place to live for the heat haters. Right on the coast and the hot NE winds come off the water there.

The hills above Albany do get above 1000m, but that extra couple hundred metres like the OP would make all the difference.

Ta Finners. Fits with one or two other reports of patchy light snowfalls elsewhere in the central ranges.

Wet snow was falling at the Summit of Mt Canobolas mid to late arvo today. Thin, patchy settling right at the summit and not much lower. A non-forecasted event, so the summit gate wasn't closed. Temp was abt 2deg. Will see if I can post a video later if I can figure out how.

Could see some snow on the Central Tablelands from about 2am to 3am in the morning 25 Aug to start and it might go for a few hours hoping.
The charts state 850hpa is at 1 deg, 700hpa is at -7.5 and at 500hpa it is predicted to be -25.
I'm optimistic but the volume is any bodys guess, my model states 13kg/msq but that my only be 2mm.
Fingers crossed though.

Some decent cold air with the southerly, Goulburn and Nerriga are on 5°C. There may already be snow falling in the higher parts around Taralga and Crookwell.
Oh boy there's going to be massive amount of snow somewhere.

Already reports of snow at Black Springs about 1200m ASL.

Allbeef, 925mb charts are ones to watch with temps about 4 or 5°C at that elevation on GFS. 850 and 700 aren't that impressive.

My inexpert thoughs:

Winter 2016 has generally been warm and wet, with Spring starting off in a similar vein.

If it's wet, it will be snowing if you go high enough, but lower / marginal areas will tend to get more rain and less snow, with what little snow that settles being soon washed away. In fact, if we had ski resorts at 2,500 metres, they might be having a bumper season, but places like Selwyn and Lake Mountain don't fare so well.

This is what seems to be happening this year. Higher places like Spencer's Creek are doing quite well (relative to the last 20 years or so anyway), while lower levels are struggling to retain cover: http://www.snowyhydro.com.au/waterenvironment/snow-depths-calculator/

Meanwhile, outside the Alpine areas, Snow Season 2016 seems to have mostly fizzled out after early August except in a few high spots like Shooters Hill.

Big snow events are possible up to about mid October, but that would involve a big break from the current pattern of warm wet troughs dipping down from the tropics followed by weak cold fronts from the West.

Trailing edge of a strong rain band passing through sw w.a on Sunday night, caught by just enough of the following cold pool to produce a very light dusting on Bluff Knoll.

Sad when the only snow reports are from WA, though. Albany gets far more fronts than it should for its mediocre latitude. You guys need to get rid of Perth's garbage by building a big landfill on the top of the Stirling Ranges wink

For the past 6 weeks or so, the fronts approaching Oz have been peaking over WA, before pushing into the interior and forming troughs and rain bands that then have descended into the south-east. We've been getting the dregs of these cold fronts and have struggled to receive much cold air.
It's been a tough snow season in the alps, just plodding along with generally small top ups to keep it afloat. In that respect, it's done pretty well to survive this long.

Yes OR.

Frequency of light dustings has been good this year - but getting a strong front with plenty of trailing moisture elusive...and time must be running out.

Looking north east along the summit ridge of Bluff Knoll Wednesday 28th, 6.30am.
Ground temps not a problem - at least not in the early part of the morning.

Indeed SB! That is an excellent pic! It not only captures the snowfall but also the wonderful views from BK across the Stirlings and out over the great southern land/farmscape.

Many thanks for posting it. Snow starved we are all!

Not a bad cover either for BK - thin but consistent. Is that rime on the shrub?

Yes a really well composed photo. As you say Mr O.R. the flat lands beyond are a very interesting contrast. Looks green as well smile

The only issue is something I have to correct myself on almost every time - crooked horizon grin

I'm so bad that I now remind myself to look at the horizon EVERY time I shoot - I still bugger it up though sometimes. I'm a shocker at it grin

It's a really lovely photo to look at and look at again. smile The effort taken to get that photo is MOST impressive and SB has done that a number of times. Obviously not as lazy as me grin

Crooked, yeah, but imagine the gale up there, especially near that escarpment edge. One of my now distant memories is how ferocious the gale was up that south facing incline at the top of BK.

All is forgiven SB! You just keep snapping away. smile

Haha, reckon you're close enough to the pole down there to pick up a bit of curvature. Good try! wink

I was wondering how you managed to get up BK so often; now I know your secret: just lead with the short leg going up; reverse that going down. laugh

Selwyn keeps getting massive amounts of snow and the webcam keeps changing between dead grass and pure white for as far as the webcam can see. It's really something to see smile!

This weeks Spencers Creek reading could very well be a season high.
Shame the resorts are closed.

Latest reading is in from Spencers Creek and indeed it is a season high depth of 170.5 cm's. First time ever the peak has been reached in October.
Such a shame the resorts are closed.

Indeed, don't reckon that snow will last long though. Having said that - chance of "top up's" next week too.

Actually, not quite the first (1968 was another example I found), but pretty rare.

Yep, the cruel irony of the Aussie snow season. However, if the Alps were in SW WA, this year would have been close to a record breaker and it would be skiable to Christmas....

Unusual to have peak snow after resorts already closed? Did CP close too early?

Mt. WELLINGTON, Vic. had good snow on it this morning, as good as seen all year from a distant observation.

The last few centimetres of snow cling on tenaciously at Spencer's Creek (1,830 metres) as at the 16th, down from its peak of 170.5 cm just 6 weeks previously in early October. It will be gone by the time of next week's check, if it hasn't vanished already in the warm weather.

Snow cams still show patches of snow on the highest ground.
The snow has long since departed from lower levels.

http://www.snowyhydro.com.au/our-energy/water/inflows/snow-depths-calculator/

So that's probably it for the 2016 snow season.

Was up in Thredbo, Charlotte Pass and Perisher on the weekend of 11-13 November 2016. Scored a nice late snow fall on the Sunday. Here's a few pics to set the scene.

Edit: The photos above are

1. Looking from Black Salees restaurant at the top of Snowgums chairlift (a.k.a slowbums or slowgums chair) Thredbo
2. Charlotte Pass
3. Same as 1 above

(by late, I mean late in the year, not late in the day)

Could be a chance today later on. Won't do the drive this time.

I miss the snow too. Japan in January '17 should fix that deprivation.

Not Australia, but thinking of those very cold days from a few weeks ago in Furano, Japan. What a contrast to what's happening here.

Kangaroo, are you back from Japan now?

What a change that must be, you've returned at possibly the worst time too.

Yes, feels like only yesterday I was naked, surrounded by Japanese men, also surrounded by the best quality snow I've ever been in.

Got down to some wickedly cold temps over there, hard to know who to believe. Furano resort reported -29 one night (but ski resorts tend to exaggerate). The town's prominent digital thermometer depicted -17 one night. I was so rugged up that it was hard to tell. My nudie onsen was indoors, so I didn't get to experience shrinkage or frostbite (or a combination).

Cheers.
