Warming up quickly here on the way to 30 or 31, our record is 32.

An overnight of about 11 (at least that's not too bad) smile

Then a bit cooler tomorrow before the "heat" (vs just "warmth") should be shoved northwards. Then the nights cool again. Single digits coming in a few days.

GFS is looking at a rain even over much of eastern NSW around the 17/18th or thereabouts. It's 11 days away so quite exposed to changing or disappearing. Obviously I hope it happens, along with plenty of other folk I suspect.

Second half of April almost always will be cooler than the first half (especially around here), this is a really obvious transition month almost every year.

Many areas of eastern Oz would be running relatively similar stat numbers to here. EG we are 6.3 above average max, our average is 20.6 degrees, our coldest max so far is 26. BUT I know that at the end of April we will really struggle to get above 20 or 22.

I just keep looking forward to the coolness that must start to arrive over the next couple of weeks. At least down in Tassie & southern Vic there are cool changes whipping through and cooling for a day or two, just doesn't happen up here like that (inland at least). I envy the Tassies greatly with the changes coming through today and also on the weekend (with minor flakeage possible). They are flushing the heat potential away more every one that comes through.

Eventually that increasing pool of coolness down south will edge more northward and make the HEAT events far more difficult.

Any how, it will do what it's gunna doo and we are only able to watch. Thankfully we can't control it, we'd surely stuff it right up if we could. grin

Yes, it can't stay very warm for long. The sun's no longer up for long enough. While we won't see sub-10 here for a while, maybe we'll start getting a few sub-15 minima.

It's already 28-30 across Sydney right now, including coastal stations, so there's a way to go yet, certainly away from the coast. There's a brisk NW'er blowing, so the seabreeze will struggle to penetrate far inland if it gets going. I expect the BOM will 'upgrade' forecast temps soon.

26.6 the max here so far. Quite breezy now.

Think we will get to 31 or 30 without much trouble.

I think April records are at risk in coastal areas near Sydney, including that for OH (33.9), with less than 4 degrees to go and it's still only 11:00. There's no Southerly or cloud likely before sunset, and the sea breeze will struggle.

Inland records (mostly around 36-37, set on 4/4/86) are probably safe.

Possibly, but the problem is that winds are northerly along most of the coastal plain so all it will take is a few degrees on a compass rose for that to turn into a NEly seabreeze. Would be better if the NWers from the tablelands mixed down to sea level.

I'm watching the beach webcams. Bondi is good because they still have flags up at this time of year. It shows it's calm with an occasional northerly gust and surface conditions are clean. Obs Hill should therefore be ok for a little while.

Obs Hill has hit 33.1C. How much further can it go? The sea breeze is close as it is now established on the beaches and the Harbour. I'll be very surprised if we get the record.

This makes it the hottest day since 33.5C on 21 January. Not bad for April!

We in Nowra have reached a maximum of 34.5c so far today. Previous hottest in April was 33.5c, so smashed by 1c, however that's only 15 years of records. Still significant though.

The record at the old Nowra RAN Station was 36.4 on 4/4/86: http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/tables/cw_068076_All.shtml

Even so, it's probably still the hottest since then.

By the way, did 0.2mm of rain really fall out of a clear sky at OH between 11:30 and 12:00 when it was 32 degrees, 32% humidity and a drying breeze blowing? I don't think so. These phantom 0.2's distort rain day stats, although not so much the total rainfall. Even so, they should be fixed.

Only 27.4c here, seabreeze well and truly established along the beaches, not overly strong but strong enough to produce the odd whitecap.

Tocal (34c) jumped up 2c in half an hour as the wind swung from the NE to the west.

OH has a new April record: 34.0.

Let's see how far it gets. The sea breeze is very close now, although the Harbour Bridge flags still sho a brisk NW'er.

There's a 10 degree difference between Obs Hill and the Harbour no more than 2km away at the moment. Has been for a while

Seems as though I've maxed out at around 31.8 here. That was 2 hours ago. Can't see it getting hotter now, and we are currently at 31.1
Feels hot in that nor-wester though, which is quite gusty at times.
The bushfire smoke smell was seriously pungent here this morning. A thick blue haze was clearly evident. There is still a whiff of it now, even with these strong winds.

Tocal getting a late surge 36.3c

I'm still under a seabreeze here, currently 28.2c I think that might be it for here unless that Norwester comes through.
Thank god there's no bushfire smoke around here, just beautiful blue skies.

Taken from Jimmy's Beach looking in an easterly direction, you can just see the top of Yacaaba Headland.

36C peak now for Maitland, now steady at 35C.
Record for Maitland, not so for Tocal. (much longer records - going back to 1986 when many NSW April records were broken).

I'm amazed, some spots like Penrith and Richmond even scraped 37C and the fact that the Obs Hill record is broken. It "only" hit 32.4C here. I sort of wish it was hotter. Now it's cooler, and disgustingly humid. DP of 21C, in April!! shocked

Well done Steve, you picked it (the record being tumbled) and I doubted you. blush

Hottest day for Penrith, and also Richmond for the current weather station. (old station recorded 38C in 1986).
