Hi all, just wondering who is doing cover cropping in their operations. For those who don't know, cover cropping is a crop grown with the intention of leaving the residue on the ground to cover the soil and improve the soil.

I have been doing more reading on this of late and have read about several people trying it out even in the mallee. The idea of putting in a cover crop over summer sounds like madness to many of the croppers as it uses soil moisture but the theory is that the presence of a living root in the soil for as long as possible does so much for soil structure and fertility that the water use is justified. Just wanting to know it anyone on here is doing it.

Ah good! I am seeing a few people doing it more in my region of Twitter but the idea seems to be slow to catch on. Hopefully people will get on board soon. Diversity is key to soil health and cover crops are part of the solution.

More and more vineyards are doing it now in between rows.... mulching it down into the soil just before spring.

That's more along the lines of green manure Teckert. Similar principle of feeding the soil but discing it is basically killing most of the soil microbiology you are wanting to feed! Cover crops are both feeding the microbiology and also covering the soil to protect it from the elements.

What I am talking about here is planting a diverse mix of grasses and broadleaf plants to keep a living root in the soil for as long as possible while providing cover for the surface.
