Why don't they just call it something else or add it onto the base rate?

I don't really like politics. Seems like it's mostly two sides butting heads rather than discussing constructively what's best for the country. People pick a team and are for everything they do - while the other side is against everything. Doesn't seem like much independent thinking going on. I think they call it 'partisan' politics - it's horrible in the US.

All just a popularity contest poke I guess that's democracy though...and it's better than the alternative.

What would these so called 'experts' know anyway? wink

Is respect for academics getting worse? I guess anyone can figure themselves an expert these days with the internet.

...and you'd be part right.I am more disappointed that the Coalition were returned. They don't deserve to be there as they have been a total disaster the past 3 years under both Abbott and Turnbull. Though part of me is glad they didn't as I want to watch these muppets in the Coalition government negotiate with this senate. That and I get to lay the boots in every time they stuff up which is already heaps in just a few short weeks.

@Chris...Yes, that is the joy of politics. Though I don't agree with everythig Labor do all the time. I didn't lie Rudd and still don't. He was always in it for himself like Turnbull.

Just today Turnbull has been forced into an embarrassing backdown on his super policy he took to the election.

Blah blah blah blah. In actual interesting if somewhat disturbing political news today. Pauline gives her maiden speech loaded with her usual mix of false hearsay and badly delivered common sense. Greens and some od xenaphons party walk out in a disgraceful display clearly demonstrating their dislike of democracy. No good can come oit of this behaviour from either side.

This was a stunt. It is completely voluntary for mps/senators to sit in on speeches during debate or maiden speeches. The Greens wanted attention, sat in and then picked the right moment to walk out. While i dont agree with alot of tripe out of hansens mouth this petty childish antics from the Greens.

Hanson is an uneducated gronk. She is a cheese grater to listen to and an absolute dill. She said the same about Asians 20 years ago and they integrated reasonably well. There are certainly some issues with some Muslims but there are plenty of fine people amongst them also. Just as is the case with Australians.

I can't discuss the absolute stupidity her senator Malcolm Roberts spewed out because the topic is not permitted but regardless of where one might stand on it, his expalantion was pure tin foil hat shyte. An absolute nutter.

I'd sooner listen to Hinch name sick bastards that interfere with kids all day long than anything Hanson or her Senators spew forward.

I wonder how you felt when you saw Abbott and some other Liberal politicians running from the chamber when Gillard was about to speak Mick?

Funny how no-one wants to talk about the "economic" refugees that arrived during the 60's from England and various European nations. Afterall , this is the very excuse the Coalition are using to lock these people up on Manus.

Yeah Mick. Hanson is hardly a pillar of society but the fact is ANY elected official represents Australians. Not all of them but at least some of them. And those Aussies have the right to say their piece and to be heard(whether we agree with them or not) and pollies walking out like that not only shows a lack of respect for anyone they disagree with but a lack of respect for freedom and democracy in my oppinion. It is a clear indication and propogation of the massive divides in our country and the fact that many sides have no interest in fixing them.

Your silence on the Hanson/Abbott lunch stunt is noted Mick. The man was instrumental in getting her jailed and now they are besties?

This meme sums up the absolute staggering hypocrisy of the right and their desire to suck up to a woman they despise to gain her support for legislation.

my apologies for not commenting on every single piece of parliamentary news that occurs every day. if hansen and abbott want to kiss and make up then that is their problem and atleast they are being more mature than the Greens.

In regards to the above Meme, half the senate chamber went to congratulate hansen after her first speech. watch the video, they all line up in row to congratulate her. as is tradition for a new sitting member. again, unlike the Greens, atleast some in parliament are being mature.

Apology accepted. You're entitled to ignore the news that doesn't suit your agenda laugh Half the chamber need Hanson's support and are prepared to sell their souls to get it. Remember that one seat majority?

Mature like Abbott who along with Abbott was instrumental in jailing her? That kind of maturity?

You know one thing that stands out in your comments today is how the Coalition won the election (by the skin of their teeth ).

However the same cannot be said for Mal. He is on a leash quite clearly and the FRWNJ's are holding the other end. Remember this was a key election promise.

blimey mate, members come and go in the chambers all the time during, before, after all the different speaking opportunities or divisions.

unless it is a division or question time, members are not required to be in the chamber at all apart from their allocated speaking times.

obviously a huge issue for you but not for Hansen. the government needs Hansen, she didnt have to do the video. no one forced her to do it.

in regards to the super changes, i am surprised as you are. and thankfully a common sense backflip. pretty obvious that the electorate was not in favour of it and the representatives spoke. is that what they are not there for, representing? damned if you follow the party line, damned if you stand up to represent by the sounds of it.

...and yet other members have to suffer through that awful Michaelia Cash's nails on a blackboard screech, Abott's "umm ,err ,umm" and Mathias "I'll be bark" Cormann's robotic dribble. Thankfully for all of his faults at least Turnbull can speak. I'll grant him that.
