Grass is starting to brown off in parts of Illawarra - near beaches and on sandy soil.

I went for a little (emphasis on little in size too) surf at Port Kembla yesterday and immediately on getting out of the car put both feet into a massive patch of bindi's, I must have had 30-40 in each foot.

It has been perfect weather for bindi's, wet winter, followed by dry Spring to make sure they are as brown and hard as possible.

Well it's a bit of a contrast to yesterday. Grey dome skies, light winds and light rain. After a very warm night, the temperature has been going backwards since around 8:00AM, it's now about 15, after having around 22-23 all night.

History will record today's maximum as whatever it was at 9:00 (e.g.22.4 at OH).

I chose a good day to catch up on indoors work.

Dont understand how that works.. surely the max would be taken as the temp at 3-4pm (ie. peak of the day)

You would think so LRH. It doesn't really make sense, but all maximums are taken from 9am to 9am and for the most part, this system works okay and you do get a max at the peak of the day.

The minimum was 21.7C. The 9am temp was 22.4C as you said but at 9:10 it was 20.7C.

Does the 9am temp count as the maximum or the 9:10 temp? In the later case it would be 21.7 min and 20.7 max which would be very weird.

As I understand it, the maxima and minima are the highest and lowest temperatures reached between one second after 9:00AM one day and 9:00AM on the next. So assuming that it doesn't get any warmer before 9:00 tomorrow (a safe assumpption), 22.4, or any higher value it might have reached between 9:00 and 9:10, would be it. Theoreticall, one day's maximum could be equal to the previous day's minimum, but it can never be less.

The 9:00 reset mostly works OK, but when a cool change arrives shortly before 9:00 it can give odd results, so that recorded 22 degree maximum doesn't really reflect the sort of day we are experiencing. But then, any other reset time would have the same problem in rapidly changing conditions.

P.S. It's now down to 15.3 at OH, up a bit from a low of 15.0 at 1:30PM. That's down 8 degrees since 8:30AM, the Ice Age cometh.

At Singo now, not far before going home, raining heavily and only 12.6C. Radar looks heavy around here.
This system seemingly has come from nowhere, only 1-5mm was the forecast right across the Hunter today.

Board shorts this morning, tracksuits this afternoon!!
Temp is currently 14.4c and falling, 4.2mm so far and judging by the radar we should go close to doubling that.

Had the day off with the kids and took them for a drive up the mountains to get them out of the house. At midday It was 15'c and raining moderately at Richmond, 11'c at Kurrajong Heights, 10'c at Bilpin and 8'c at Mount Tomah.
The highlight for the kids was getting an Apple pie from Pie in the Sky.
What a diiference in weather from yesterday to today, going from Summer back to Winter.

I have had 18mm since midnight, currently 12.5c here. I went to Mt Wilson today and arrived with the cold front, I think it was about 6c, but not much rain. Nooroo garden looked great but it was a bit cold to really appreciate.

I'm just watching the Mt Stapylton radar in Brisbane and watching that storm intensify as it approaches.
Any of us Sydneysiders get frustrated seeing this? It seems to be a regular occurrence, whereas, in Sydney, when storms come off the ranges, ours die in the arse?

It makes you sick, but its one well defined line!!

Sun is making an appearance here just now, doubt it will heat things up, currently 12.4c

In Sydney, it started clearing from about 4:00PM with the Sun making a reappearance. It's now pretty clear. It's warmed up too.
After falling as low as 14 in the mid afternoon, the temperature shot up to 17-18.

Believe it or not - and almost a Ripley's, there were a couple of rumbles of thunder around Kiama near sunset yesterday.

A weak southerly surge was coming up the coast late yesterday, undercutting the westerly. This had generated a small patch of showers that paralleled the coast from around Batemans Bay to Berry.

Saddleback mountain was just in the right position to the wind change to provide enough uplift to get shower into storm. It was all short lived and died within 30 mins over the ocean.

This is not the first time I have seen this. One August several years ago Saddleback provided just enough lift to get a storm going that moved offshore Kiama and became a weak supercell. Normally however even Saddleback's extra lift is still not enough to overcome other factors.
