Magic shots Colin, thanks for posting. Quite surreal here up on Mt Lindesay this arvo so calm n peaceful, you wouldn't have known such a monster was lurking down Brisbane way from up here. I am on the western side though. Some crazy pics coming in, one on HSC showing toppled shipping containers at the port

Thanks Sameoldstory, it is exciting, it is eerie and it does get very wild and sometimes a little frightning. Had everything today from heavy rain, Hail, Strong winds and lots of thunder and lightning.

Every time I see photos/reports of notable supercells like this I try to imagine going through the 1985 storm must have been like. To have winds even stronger than today along with insane rain and huge hail...

The only words to describe 1985 is Code Brown. It was horrifying and I was right smack in the middle. I know it will happen again and it scares me.

Thanks Joesk. It jacked up as it drew closer to the Bay. Became very photogenic.

I'll post shots from my area later this week when I've got some time.

Massive wind gusts there at Brisbane Airport! RWM is at Wynnum North, I'm hoping everything's alright at his place.
Great pics too Colin.

Coffs Harbour got to 37.4ēC today, the warmest day there since 9th January 2013 (37.7ēC).
Unlike other places on the MNC, we had a seabreeze here this afternoon. Then just after 4pm, the wind suddenly turned to a strong, dry WNW'ly. The seabreeze must have been a shallow and very localised feature.

It was another nice storm event here. Hit two days in a row by awesome and frequent lightning storms, and then yesterday's surprise evening storm that defied the odds and reached the coast. 17 thunderstorm hits here so far this storm season.

The storm MAY be the one that struck Narrabri much earlier but certainly it commenced well west of the mountains . It passed over Glen Innes (19mm 65km/h winds - 8.30 EDT) before Grafton . It's still rumbling away east of Yamba and I'll now be watching its path out to sea...
Your storm was the same one that hit Narrabri. The track of those two long-lived storms yesterday. The northern one continued out to sea until about 2:30am, "dieing" about 200kms offshore. It lasted about 11Ŋ hours.

A lot of footage has been emerging on social media of some of the damage caused by the storms, not only around areas like Brisbane Airport but also other areas like Maryborough. Pretty extensive damage in the areas affected.
Unfortunately, the TV media seem to be a bit slow in catching up this time.

https://www.facebook.com/100003376007884/videos/1018409428281581/

Below are some photos I took (the 1st one isn't mine - it was taken by Karl Hircock from Media Ninja and shared to fb and the 2nd one was taken by Phil Hishon and shared to the HSC page). Radar measured the heights of the 2nd cell that passed by here (I haven't uploaded those photos yet) a bit over 14km high at the time.

A couple of questions if you get the chance Ken.

Is there widespread damage from this storm in the NE suburbs or is it just fairly localised?

Also, is there any table or graph that shows highest recorded wind speeds in SE QLD from storms? I've only come across this one, but it stops at 1995.

In terms of recorded wind gusts I think the only 150+ gust after the time period was the Double Island Point record. This would make today's storm the 3rd highest recorded storm wind gust?

EDIT: Interesting to note how many violent storms there were in the past. This graph and other data I've come across shows that the frequency of severe storms has really dropped off in the last 20 years, although the intensity of those fewer storms perhaps hasn't.

Thanks CJI, Mad Elf #1.5 and Seabreeze.
Thanks for posting those photo's Ken. There is a Beauty on the South Brisbane Storm Chasers page which is mind blowing. Just highlights how much the Supercell continued to build as it approached the Airport after moving over Bracken Ridge.

Natures fury , don't forget the gap storm, no question about it that was 150k+, my tv antenna , clothesline and pot plants can vouch for it.

Without a doubt, but there were no recorded wind gusts from the Gap just Doppler imagery. Still, even if today was top 5 rather than top 3 that's quite historic.

Ha, that is were they came from. Do you want them back Big T? We were in that storms path as it moved out to the Bay, it was powerful here, we even watched the house behind us Whirly Bird go flying off and we were on the tail end. We watched what we believed to be a small weak rain wrapped tornado hit a few yards. The damage along the Jinker Track was jaw dropping, and the amount of sheds in Brendale with damage was incredible. I know you were hit with a Micro Burst/ Straight Line winds but I swear by the time it hit Joyner, Brendale etc etc there was rotation in that storm with so many signs twisted and just the damage done was different from the Gap's Damage.

Reports on local papers website at home on Sunny Coast that a "mini tornado" hit Dicky Beach at Caloundra. Apparently a lot of damage done in the area especially at caravan park there with roofs torn off caravans. Some good videos of the storm near there on their website.

HSC has an excellent one of some poor bugger stuck behind a pillar outside the airport in the 150 plus km winds...the noise of the wind is unreal in that video.

I managed to get up to Jacobs well to get this photo, I was planning to go either Wellington or Cleveland point but ran out of time. The structure would have been amazing to capture had of I been closer. Well done on the forecasting once again, I had my doubts whether anything would fire up. Most people on here called it would happen North of Brisbane which it did.

Another photo of the clouds trying to grow at Kingscliff in Northern NSW. At a loss as to why this area didn't fire up, yet they got some good storms down in Yamba?

Very Nice photo's Glen. Love the colours in the 1st photo.

Thanks sharjay for finding the news stories. As I said earlier and Ken also stated later, the media seemed to be way behind with the storm coverage. Seemingly there is lots of damage around different areas.

Wynnum Nth 24 hour rain 3.0mm from 3 TS's. Brisbane Airport only 7 km away and Port of Brisbane only 4 km away copped 158km/hr winds. Max wind here 57km/hr from the north. Lucky for us we did not get the big winds here.
