I'm thinking, my partner was explaining most of our rain comes from the south east and the Southern part of me says - what the heck - rain comes from the west, but I have been studiously studying the satellite pics and clouds and indeed, the rain does come from that sector. The stuff comes in from the west still but flows around and then does a whizzy over the sea and returns and showers us.(Sometimes)
I know everyone here knows that but my penny has just dropped.
Talking to someone on phone this morning and she said - lovely rain last night - I said - none here, you and Sth Johnstone get more than us, with a slight chagrin in my heart.
I can't wait to see the rain come directly from the west, that will make a delightful change of cloud gazing.

We do get rain from the west here in Cairns. It comes in the form of a rare event called a thunderstorm. Apparently they happen once or twice every decade

Blue sunny Dry Season skies here first thing in the morning for a couple hours. Now it's big build-up type clouds, but doesn't look like rain. No pool to fill, but I could give the garden a good soaking.

We get a few storms from the south-west, coming up from Georgetown way. Haven't had any for quite some time. Most of them split when they got here.

They must be getting some decent totals on the tablelands. The cells are just sitting there.

Hopefully, when the MT dips to the south a bit we can get under some of the monsoonal flow, which is happening around Weipa at present.

We should start to see an increase in rain from Sunday, "possibly".

Some decent falls on the tablelands, normally a precursor to our rain in my memory but sometimes by weeks...

Nice day today though:

Nice pic RF.

Looks like I am going to finish December with only 15.6mm recorded. Unless something pops up in the next 9 hrs.
A measly 491.4mm for the year. Roll on a wet 2017!!!!

Been meaning to say I have seen a few Queen Green Ants in the last few days so the rain can't be far off. Usually starts in a week or 2 from when they appear. Last year they suddenly appeared about 9/10 days out from xmas. More reliable than models wink

I hope everyone has a happy and safe new years. Looking forward to an exciting year ahead.

I remember when I came to Cairns ten years ago and the wet seasons were wet wet wet. I remember the monsoonal rains, where you looked at the radar and the entire 128k radar was blue with yellows and reds all over the shop (I am colour blind so I don't know the actual colours of the BOM radar).

But I remember looking at a 'full radar' as if it was normal in those days. The rain was widespread - EVERYONE got it - today its localised and you have to be lucky to be under them. Even with the summer storms on the Tablelands - those days EVERYONE got a good decent drop. Now the MJ will dip past with one or two areas of in / outflows or convergence - and the rain event is over that that tiny localised in an hour or two. I think it was 2009 or 2010 we have 2.5metres of rain.

Either way, I miss those days. Let's hope we swing back to those days... this year was an absolute shocker of a year for our weather.
