Bright violet-white CGs and forks.

EDIT: most action is South of me and mostly finished here. CBD is scoring a direct hit.

Cell to the North looks pretty intense, with a briefly black core near Terry Hills. That storm extends from Avalon to Glenorie.

Also this is from the other day... view from Mona Vale looking north-west towards the lower hunter.

And these were after some cells to the south swept out to sea...

Welcome Menthurae and thanks for posting those pictures. Great capture in the second picture.

What's your location? Just general area if you prefer, e.g. 'Sydney Eastern Suburbs'.

These cells that have been passing over the Hunter from the West are small and very lightning active, brief but very heavy rain in them, some with hail.5-1/2 mms so far.

Northern Beaches of Sydney.

Part of the reason I signed up was to ask a question of you guys and girls.

Do you feel that storm patterns have changed over the past few years (to decade I guess)?

When I was growing in the Hunter Valley up I remember having storms of much greater intensity that seemed to last quite a long time.

Since moving to the Northern Beaches around 2000 - I remember storms seeming to intensify just before hitting the area.

Are these just imprinted memories of significant storms or are storms really seeming to "peter out" much more quickly nowadays? I appreciate that there have been some significant events (i.e. tornadoes) in some areas of South Sydney that, to my recollection, haven't been seen before... but I thought I'd ask you weather aficionados what you think. grin

The Hunter Valley is known to get more powerful storms than Sydney and in fact gets some of the most severe in the country.

However, from doing a thesis on hail since 1950 in Sydney and also following storms in Sydney since 2001, there has definitely been an overall shift in a decline in both intensity and frequency in Sydney. There are exceptions of course i.e. the tornado last year, 10 storm days in a row in Dec 2014.. however there hasn't been any big seasons such as 01/02, 03/04, 04/05 or 07/08 (and even back to 90/91, 91/92) for some time. My hail studies showed there was an 80s to early 90s peak in severe activity in Sydney.

Evidence suggests a warming upper atmosphere and vertical wind shear, which would decrease storms over Sydney. However, it could also just be part of a cycle.

Some impressive booms could be heard from inside of my building in Darling Harbour.

Boy, if I thought it was humid before walking outside after work certainly have me a shock.

Bankstown AWS registering 7.4 MMS. However other AWS's in the area are showing about half that.

Looks like I'll have to do the good old look underneath the tree check to see whether it's dry. smile

Can see some towers bubbling away to the southwest on the train from my current location in Bankstown.

Can't imagine it'll be long before something pops up on radar in that direction.

Don't have a view directly west but fingers crossed there may be a round two. grin

Edit: just got a glimpse out west and can't see anything half as exciting. frown

Oh well, I live in hope.

I am no expert, but just going off memory / impressions. Certainly storms come in cycles. The first half of the 2014/15 season was a classic, last year a disappointment and this year off to a slow start but catching up, although this year's storms have been pretty tame where I've been. Having lived in Sydney nearly all my life, I feel that the overall frequency of storms is about the same as it was in the 70s, but hail, like frost in the Metro area and snow below about 900 metres, is less common.

* * * * *

The Illawarra seems to be getting a late surge of warmth. The Southerly passed through Ulladulla just before 5:00PM and is approaching Jervis Bay / Nowra.

The Sun is back. I think that's it for storms for Sydney for the time being.

Quite a lot of bubbling clouds towards my far south. Possibly the showery activity that's happening near St Georges Basin.

I've lived in Green Valley (west of Liverpool) for 65 years, and just going by my memory I'd say that around here the storms are in a weak cycle atm. I have also been in the local SES for 24 years and the peak of storms for us would have been the 90s through to the 05s.

In particular hail storms seemed to be less frequent in the last 8 years or so.

Managed to have a second round of storms this evening, lightning wasn't as frequent as the first storm but it was suffice.
Some very much welcomed rain in the second storm, at a guess probably about 5mm in total, will check in the morning.
Managed a few pics after work, nothing special, missed plenty of decent bolts due to the rain and failure of a smart app!!

Oh and look storm have taken the lead 2-1 over southerlies but I think an equaliser isn't far away!! poke

Did in fact get to 40C yesterday at Maitland, 41C in Singleton.
1st drops of rain fell on my car on the way home, strange to have that with the temp still at 39-40C after 3pm.
Only 1.6mm according to the weather station, but seemed like a few mm.

Started drizzling here in Darling Harbour in the last 30 minutes. Has steadily increased but there's nothing on radar.

Yes it has really closed in around Sydney now. Cannot see the tops of the higher buildings as they are shrouded in a featureless stratus layer.

Feels like there should be an international cricket match on today. Is there any major outdoor event on today? It usually works like that in Sydney.

Hi all smile

I survived Wee Waa, Green fields very kindly turned the heat machine on for me. smile

Helping move house in 42 or 43 degree temps is something I have done in the past and of course this weekend did it again.

Not a lot of fun for this ole fart, did a fair amount of sweating (rivers actually). Sleeping wasn't easy either.

Was an absolute blessing to get in the car to drive back home to Bathurst.

Got some half decent sunburn on the weekend, got knackered working well into the night trying to pack & clean etc.

Certainly remember why I no longer live in those hot areas and moved to cooler climes. smile

Still sore and tired but I may just possibly live a little longer.

Looking forward to tonight as temp should drop to about 11 or 12 and let me get some heat out of the house.

While I was away. Bx had pretty warm temps as well, up to 34 which is hot for here, so I would have been sooking anyway grin

Saturday morning should be about 5 - even nicer. smile

No rain out here, couple of spits. Missed the stormage in general the last few days.

About 24 degrees

A handy 6.6mm in the 24 hours to 9am, hopefully another 10mm or so would be nice this afternoon!!

Been a mostly overcast day, sun did make an appearance there for a short while and had some nice sting about it.
Fingers crossed for more storms this arvo.
