Have done a certain amount of hosing down media hype today. The bit that's true is that if the minimum is 25 or above, it will be the highest December minimum since (at least) 1972. (The maximum of 37.8, assuming that's what it is, is the highest for Sydney in December since 2005, but there was a 40.9 in November last year).

It's not really a significant event for heat anywhere outside coastal NSW. You only have to go back to about this time last year for four successive 40s in Adelaide, for example.

As for it supposedly being Australia's hottest December day in 44 years, it's not even Australia's hottest December day in the last week. There's a reason why people call it the Daily Fail.

Thanks for clearing some of that up, but, what about tonight being the hottest night in 44 years? That is what the daily mail is claiming for tonight.

They do it (and get away with it) because the high majority of people just believe anything they read without checking. Another reason would be because they want to overhype it so their article gets more views. Quite pathetic really, but every day I see stuff on facebook that is "clickbait".

Hottest night for December (if the forecast is right), but certainly not for any month - as pointed out earlier, the all-months record only dates back to February 2011.

Max so far is 39.4C which is so very close to a rounded 40 and I doubt that the temp will go higher again with the scattered cloud cover that is now present in form of very dry cumulus.

Looks like our max is about 33 today. Pretty warm for us.

Warm winds will keep the temp up tonight in the house!!

BOM have upped the overnight minimum for OH to 26, with 27 at Bondi and Penrith.

That's really hot for a night temp!!

RP - our aircon is wall mounted and in the wrong area, no air in our living area. Tonight one of those nights it would be good to cool the living areas better. Fans will be going though. slow cool down tonight. Strong westerly sun heating the side of my house until sunset.

Well your comment about the forecast Homer is another example of wonderful forecasting. The min for Bondi is expected to be 27C but it is currently 24C at Sydney Harbour. So the minimum can only be 24 or less...

Yeah kizz, Thursday looking like a write off and will nearly be jacket weather.

That sucks Dave, hopefully your house kept reasonably cool throughout the day.

We have a seabreeze here but a very weak one. The temp has dropped a few degrees to about 33C. Meanwhile Albion Park with a stronger seabreeze is on 27C. Coast is on 24C. I have reset my thermometer so it will show the minimum here for tomorrow morning.

I wondered about that 27 for Bondi.
If any station is going to get a cooler min than everywhere else tonight, it is Bondi, because they'll have the sea breeze influence while somewhere like Penrith will probably remain influenced by the westerly.
I indeed thought it was a strange forecast when I first read it.
Some people at the BOM just aren't doing their job properly it seems.

Yeah exactly. If there was a strong NWer all night, different story.

Thick cloud cover here now but it is a relatively tame 25C at Albion Park thanks to the NEer drawing in cooler air throughout the whole area earlier. It is possible that a warm westerly will spring up later on, rising the temp beyond 30C. But the more likely outcome, IMO, is that the temp will continue to gradually fall to low 20s with calm conditions. Min so far at my place is 24.8C.

Sydney will of course endure a hotter night as there is a large expanse of hot concrete and buildings etc and no nearby escarpment to provide a night time land breeze, except for suburbs west of the Nepean.

Still temps over 30 in many Sydney suburbs at 9.30 pm.
It's just a chilly 27.8 here, but still with a light westerly.
Coolest temps, besides Sydney Harbour AWS, are, funnily enough, in the west, at Campbelltown and Camden.

Reading 27.6c here atm and Terry Hills AWS is reading 27.3c. Grateful the humidity isn't to high but it's still warm.

We will need a NW surge to stay above 26C all night. Many suburbs sub-25C now

Just got home from picking my bro up from the northern suburbs. Was a very interesting drive home watching the temp fluctuate as we hit pockets of warm air, and in Bulli it peaked at 30C but changed from about 22 to 28 through the trip a few times. Then it was 21 at a low point near my house, but it got back up to 26 about 2km from home and then back to 23 as I arrived.
