Still some very warm temps around some parts of the metro (above 28 deg's in places), but cooler than forecast in other parts (below 24 deg's).
Will be an interesting night.

Wow @ Bellambi, Jimi and it falls in line with my observations at Bulli (approx 5km north) bout an hour ago.

We now have a light NW breeze that is starting to mix warm air down to the surface. Thermometer is saying 25.3°C but it's getting hotter with every wind gust right now.

Drove up to the Central Coast this afternoon, back this evening. Car thermometer showed 36-37 on the North Shore, 37-38 on the M1/F3 (elevation 200-250 metres) and 38 at Gosford. It was partly cloudy with bubbly-looking cumulus.

After Erina, is cooled down as I ran into the sea breeze. It was 31 near the coast.

On the way back I had a view of the ''Supermoon' - beautiful. It was 26 on the coast when I left around 9:45PM and 27-28 the rest of the way back.

It's a hot night now, probably still about 28. It's fairly clear with a bit of a breeze, orobably Northerly. I note that at Bellambi, it has shot up to near 30 when the NW'er broke through a little while ago, having previously dropped to 22..

Albion park had just risen from 22 degrees to 30 in just 10 minutes. That NW really packs a punch.

A min. of 23.9C in Canberra last night (probably - I don't think it'll drop any further); an equal record daily high min.? (WZ says 23.9C on 19th Dec. 1940.)

Canberra min 23.9C not a bad effort, the record high min they said on the radio for December is 26C apparently. (Of course they might have got that wrong?)

Min in Canberra will be 21.6c so no record there, but still their equal warmest December night not counting the 9am reset.

Looks like Sydney OH has a new December minimum record of 27.1, assuming that the temperature doesn't drop before 9:00AM. That smashes the old record of 26.3 set on Christmas morning 1868. It would be only the second time that the temperature at OH stayed above 80 F (26.8) for a 9:00 - 9:00 daily cycle. Yesterday's 9:00 reset is not relevant because it was already 27.5 by then and quickly rose from there.

The Airport seems to have smashed its old December record by over 2 degrees, at 27.5. Other Sydney and Illawarra stations may also have broken records.

A ton of high cloud coming across from the west looking at the satellite pics, be interesting to see what the max temperatures will be in the Sydney basin today

Well 9am has passed and the minimum of 27.1C appears to be locked in.

Is this the second hottest night on record behind the 6 Feb 2011 night of 27.6C?

The variability is really interesting - especially as we are also counted as Sydney on the rare occasions they remember us.
Hottest temp. recorded in our paddocks yesterday was 43.0 at 14.22, coolest overnight 20.1 at 04.23.
Now sitting at 35.9 with wind gusts from all quadrants bar NW.

We snuck down to about 17 or 18 overnight but it didn't feel like it.

The big cloud band is clearly visible to my western quadrants. Looks nice n dark too!!

Already about 28 out here, cloud cover coming over might stabilise that with any luck, otherwise it would have been a very hot day here.

I believe so. Only the second time it has stayed above 27 over a whole daily measuring cycle.

On another topic, the forecast summary for Sydney looks rather uninformative: "Shower or two developing. Cool change." That's all lots of people will hear. I think the BOM forgot to mention that it will be rather hot before the arrival of the showers (if they arrive) and the change, and that it looks like these won't be until late afternoon at the earliest.

A more succinct summary would be: "Hot. Late cool change with showers".

Temp surprisingly stable at around 26 or 27 degrees here since this morning.

Cloud thickening and keeping the sun out it seems.

We may get a spike if the cloud thins or breaks briefly later.

26 and a breeze feels quite ok so far smile

Very impressive figures with the hottest December night on record for Sydney!

However glancing around the remainder of the state, there hasn't been too many others broken really, especially long-term.

Just quietly, I do wonder how much warmer it would have gotten due to the urban heat island effect, given Obs Hill and the AP were the standouts.. one of the most developed sites in the state. I still feel 1868 was more impressive in the scheme of things (cooler site, less concrete)

We have a large break in the clouds coming over, the temp will probably rise with that. Otherwise still pleasant at about 26 or 27.

Stuck on about 34°C here with cloudy skies so still quite hot. The WNWer arrived at Albion Park around 1am and the temp remained at about 31 or 32 degrees until a few hours ago before gradually rising to 34°C.

Despite the low 30s temps at night, the min was an unimpressive 19.8°C at Albion Park since there have been 2 higher minimums in this month alone. The minimum here was 22.0°C. Moss Vale however, did not get below 24°C which is the warmest night there in its short records.

Something I didn't realise, yesterday was actually the hottest December day on record for Albion Park, beating the 39.0°C figure by 0.4°C which was set on Dec 19th 2004.

The main focus of records has been the coastal strip, both urban and non-urban sites. The most significant all-months records that I've seen have been Sydney Airport, Point Perpendicular (sites merged) and Narooma. (Nowra is an all-months record for the current site but higher values have been observed at the pre-2000 site).

I don't know what the observation time range would have been for the 1868 reading at Observatory Hill.

From the SMH Sat 26th December 1868:

“Excessive heat has prevailed during the past few days. Thursday was one of the hottest days we have had this season; a hot wind was blowing all day, and continued during the whole of the following night, and up to yesterday afternoon, when a change (as agreeable as it was sudden) took place. A heavy thunderstorm broke over the city, and the wind, which had been blowing from the north-west, suddenly shifted round to the south-east from which quarter it blew very strong for an hour or so. It rained heavily for about an hour, and a change in the temperature was extremely pleasant and refreshing”.

Would seem a very similar scenario to last night and this morning, so the 1868 minimum most likely occurred during night of the 24th.
