Have just been doing a bit more digging. Interestingly, the 6am temperature this morning at Sydney is only the 6th highest on record for December (digitised 3-hourly data go back to 1955), with the highest being 29.0 on 8 December 1990.

Most of the cases of warmer 6am temperatures have lower temperatures earlier in the night. However, a possible candidate for a hotter December night is 26 December 1957, where the lowest 3-hourly observation between 6pm and 9am was 28.8. (It jumped from 28.8 at 6pm to 36.4 (!) at 9pm). I'm currently chasing up whether any record exists of the "overnight" minimum from that day.

(In 1957, Sydney, and other major city sites, used a midnight-midnight day, so the minimum was 20.4 at the following midnight after the change had gone through - this was a common scenario during the years (1932-1963) when a midnight observing day was used and has led to a lot of hot nights, many more than with a 9am-9am day, being lost from the record. With a 9am-9am day, 26 December 1957 would have been 25.1 (9am temperature the previous day) or close to it, although of course there was also no daylight saving time in 1957 so 9am then equates to 10am now).

Temora at 1.30 was 19.7 degrees and 5.2 mm rain, so the change is on the way.

Yes. West Wyalong about 21 as well. Young about 26, we got to 32 in clearer skies, cloudier again and about 30 here now.

Change not a long way away although it seems to be only slowly pushing northwards at this stage. Could still be a few hours away from here I suspect.

Bombala went from 25.6 at midday to 13.2 an hour and a half later.
It's a proper cool change.

Looks to be a decent rain band developing in the Illawarra but nothing is showing up in the obs.
Is it virga?
WR?

It's a classic setup for virga, though judging by the strength of the echoes at least a little precip should have hit the ground. Campbelltown AWS has fallen below 30 under that blob.

That's what I thought Humphrey.
It's getting very dark here so I expect some virga to not fall very soon. smile

You were correct with your cloud cover estimate but the heat of the air mass has won out in the end.

Wow at Bombala!!!

At the moment, we have Forbes at about 25 degrees and Parkes (30km from Forbes) at 30 degrees. Neat little show of where the change is out that way smile

Still 30 here, Young now 21

I can report that a few drops of rain are reaching the ground here in the southern suburbs.

Yeah Homer, GFS nailed its cloud prediction. Obs hill has been on around 34C so far, perhaps a break in the cloud helped spike it up to 37C, otherwise a puff of hot air. Good work by the BoM, though if they stuck with their 37C they would've been spot on

There were brighter periods and sunny breaks in this area between about 11:30 and 13:30, probably also at OH about 10 km as the crow flies, which would have allowed the temperature to spike. There seem to be breaks incoming on the Sat Pic, but the cloud seems to be backbuilding over Sydney.

Change reached Ulladulla, dropping temp by 7 degrees so far 30 -> 23.

Temp at Cowra (normally say 2 degrees warmer than here and about 5 warmer than Orange) now about 25 degrees, similar to Orange at 25, we still 29.

Change hitting Cowra but not really at Orange and not here. Getting closer though, prob here in about an hour or so I suspect.

That's a bit strange because it hasn't hit Cooma yet.

That's what happened. Was quite a bit of sun in the city and surrounds around lunch time allowing the temperature to rise.

Temp now dropping further, Orange (23) has dropped to below Cowra (24) as it should be and we have dropped to 28.

Maybe Cooma is being shielded by topography at the moment?

It's only 21 there so it's not hot anyhoo smile

It takes a long time for cooler air to work its way into Cooma. The Nimmitabel spur of the GDR (plus the manly heffalump) ensure that direct Southern Ocean air is cut off. The Snowies block the cool air from the SW of course, so it's up to the laconic easterly change to dribble in from the Numeralla quarter.

All virga Homer, except for a few sprinkles in the last hour. So the rainband that you were talking about didn't produce any rain.

Just came back from the beach and it was beautiful there with no wind most of the time. But the flags at the next beach to the south were suggesting SWly wind and a slight temp drop in the car to 28.5C from 30.0C. The proper southerly is still further down the coast.

Winds around Sydney are shifting Southerly, but I think that the real change is still on the Illawarra, maybe near Kiama as at around 5:00PM.

One for the heat haters and rain lovers tomorrow as the trough looks to stall around Forster. Soon 'recovering' however, with two more 30+ days for the Sydney area in the coming week if the forecast is correct.
