Good thing about the "internet thingy" is that data can be found fast:

SMH Monday Jan 16th 1939:

RECORD DROP IN TEMPERATURE.
Saturday night's southerly caused still another weather record to be broken. The drop in temperature from Saturday's maximum at 1.30 p.m. to yesterday's minimum at 8.50 a.m. was 46.1 degrees, which was the greatest variation of temperature ever recorded at Sydney within 24 hours. The previous record was 45.6 degrees in January, 1863.

Sat Jan 14th 1939: low 79.1F, high 113.6F
Sun Jan 15th 1939: low 67.5F, high 69.2F

I'll let you convert F to C.

It's a shame the AP site just missed that Jan 1939 record. I still struggle to get my head around it being 48c in the west on that day, I often wonder if the westerly had been stronger what the sites further east would have recorded.

Cheers Rob, that is 20.7C so that is indeed a record: 45.3-20.7= 24.6C difference. That makes it the record by a long shot.

Yeah CS, or perhaps the 48C might not have been accurate. I can't find any stations out there. As for Ap, that could've easily reached 46 on that day since it always seems to be hotter than Obs Hill on NWly days.

I think 48C is achievable in Sydney, but it's probably a once in a century event. Black Saturday yielded 48.8 at Hopetoun VIC, which is generally cooler than Sydney in a NW airstream despite it being close to the semi arid zone. All of Steve's ducks need to align, though: if one of them so much as farts in Centennial Park, then 45-46 is all we'll get.

Here's some info from the Sydney Morning Herald.

http://images.smh.com.au/file/2013/01/08/3937672/article.jpg

This was linked in the SMH on 8/1/2013 during another heat wave, 10 days before the 74 year record was broken on the 18th of that month.

Max on Sunday 15th January 1939 seems to have been 69.2F (20.6C) by 6:00PM Sunday 15th. Given the small temperature range, it was probably a day like today. Given that the next day was even cooler (16.9 - 19.3, 0.5 mm rain), it was unlikely to have risen after 6:00PM and it it did, it would not be by much.

So a drop of 24.7 degrees, probably the record, if not an official one.

There's a big rain-free gap in the radar around bathurst and Orange. In the last few weeks we have been missing out on most of the rain. Plenty of rain in the forecast but very little on the ground.

You must've been using a different converter to me Steve. The one I used said 20.666667 which rounds up to 20.7C. Not that 0.1 of a degree matters anyway.

Plus, we need to have the W/NWly airstream in the first place which is pretty uncommon in itself and hence we don't even get many 40+ degree days.

Interesting to watch the current 64 km Sydney radar and seeing the showers from the NW cloud band overlapping the SE stream showers.

Hello Rob G. You got in first, I missed your post and a few others - was positioned at the most recent post.

WR - I did the conversion in my head. Your converter is probably more accuarte.

Re Duck farts - they give off methane, a greenhouse gas, so.... not allowed go there...

But yes, 48C would need a strong NW wind that overcomes the seabreeze, a very hot air mass, clear skies and no Southerly before about 4:00PM. Doesn't happen often.

40+ days at OH are about a once in 3-4 year occurrence. They seem to be more common today than they were, but they go in cycles. There were none from Dec 1994 to Dec 2004, for example. On the other hand, they happen about once a year at Sydney Airport (median 39.9 annual max) and are more frequent in Sydney's West (median 41.0 at Bankstown).

Just looked at tomorrow's forecast. Odd that the BOM would forecast a minimum of 19, warmer than it's been most of today. I agree with the downgraded max of 22, although 25 by 9:00 Saturday is possible.

Finally, outlook for the start of 2017 is warm and dry: http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/outlooks/#/temperature/maximum/median/monthly/0

That will please some, dismay others.

Getting some very nice steady rain here now.
It has increased from drizzle to being quite noisy on the roof of the pergola.
The vegies are loving it.
It's only the second day in a month I haven't had to hand water them. Yesterday they got two drinks!!

I'll follow up the 15 January 1939 matter at work tomorrow. There are a few cases of days with very low diurnal ranges at Sydney which have been (wrongly) flagged as suspect and therefore don't appear on the public web page, and it's possible that day was caught up in that.

Great, Blair. Please let us here know what you find.

* * * *

Steady light to moderate rain here in Chatswood now after drizzle earlier, enough to make me wish I'd taken my umbrella. "Layers" shows a great brown-yellow blob the size of Jupiter's Giant Red Spot moving over us. OK, slight exaggeration but it covers most of the state. There are embedded storms near Condoblin.

Todays 19.1 max for Obs hill makes it exactly 8C cooler than yesterdays minimum.. this also has to be some sort of record.

That's a really great point mate. I'd be curious to know myself.

Steady drizzle continuing here but it looks as though a steady rain band is heading in from the north.
Temp here has been between 17 and 18 deg's for the past 12 hours.

Something to note, as soon as that tunnel is completed, and the dual carriageway is completed all the way to the QLD Border (god knows how long that will be) you will then be able to drive from Brisbane to Melbourne without seeing a single traffic light (depending if they bypass hexham) Hope you had a great bday

I was convinced that the last sub 20 for the year was going to be when it happened back in Oct for Obs Hill.

What a disgraceful day, we only reached 17.0C which was worse than forecasted. If I had to rate it out of 10, it'd be -1 and that's being generous. In fact it equalled the record coldest day for December at Albion Park, after the hottest day on record just two days beforehand.

Sydney and surrounds have too much inconsistency in there weather in the summer months. 22 today, 32 tomorrow an back to 22 again. I work in the car rental industry up here on the GC, and was speaking to some Tourists from California.
They were gobsmacked at the change of the weather in Sydney, they thought it was going to be hot all the time over the summer months. They were actually disappointed when the southerly rolled thru as they were told Sydney gets hot weather every day which is why they booked to come in December.

Obviously they don't get those cool changes we get over in the west coast of America
