The only baking I see for Sydney will be of the kitchen kind. I see strong to gale force sea breezes and massive coastal up-welling.

The heat could still reach the coast on one of the days but Western Sydney will definitely be rather hot. Not incredibly hot but still well above average in the high 30's.

I'm not sure what your seeing there Wave Rider, but Melbourne looks like it could be baking hot too. 25th & the 27th looking really warm.

That's what I saw on last night's models but definitely very warm for all of Vic and NSW in the latest runs. No winter style cold front hitting Victoria either, like previously projected.

No, I hate cold water.

I do have a theory, actually this years strange weather patterns have meant that the SQRIGDE (South East Qld ridge, really Tasman Sea ridge ) has been rather lower in frequency.

This has allowed extreme NE NSW and SE QLD to have several NE days, instead if their usual SE trades. 13 storm days in a row for SE QLD at one stage I believe. The southern half of the NSW has had far too many SE wind days, with southern ocean highs.

I've noticed the water has been very cold (been swimming on Tweed Coast).. would have guessed the 21-22c, made going for dips pretty hard initially!! Only around 20c in Sydney as well.

Your explanation sounds about right MT - have not had many SE winds up here.. been great for the storms, but bad for downwelling.

A slow moving high will ensure the cool air currently affecting SA and Vic wont get here. Another warm day tomorrow, then a feeble cool change on Wednesday before heat gradually takes over NSW and hangs around until month end. This is good for my veges and fruit trees which will thrive in the warmth. Cherries should be ready for harvest after Christmas. Hopefully no more frosts until autumn that one on Sunday morning took me by surprise.

It's a bit sad to get to the longest day, only downhill from here. We haven't had a very hot summer so far, a few days around the low 30s but no real scorchers. I expect we will get some very hot weather come january, but when the hot weather holds off this long it won't feel like a "long hot summer" (love that movie).

It's a nice warm day out here at Cooks Gap. Hovering around 30 degrees at the moment. Looks to be a decent storm to our North East, over Coolah way. A very dry and warm North Westerly blowing out here today smile

A line of storms now forming in a NW/SE line just west of Parkes & Cowra, looks quite active with sparkage. Fast moving and a narrow band.

Should be here in an hour or two although I suspect any falls would be minimal & short lived.

My eyesight tells me that there is certainly a noticeable build up of cumulus around here now, mainly west of me. Some of it getting a little bit sizeable but not enough to actually precipitate yet.

About 30 out here.

I notice on radar a pretty good storm tracking along the Liverpool Range between Coolah & Merriwa.

Storm band approaching rapidly - pretty high based and lightning seems to be disappearing from the tracker.

Dissipating I think. Don't expect more than a spit here.

Hit an extremely pleasant 30C here at Bowral and mostly sunny. Love this kind of weather in summer. Dry and warm without being that hot either. smile

GFS brings the ex-TC remnants from WA further and further east each run. Any further and it'll be the difference between a very hot dry and a cloudy/possibly wet and cooler X-mas period

The Summer Solstice is tomorrow 21 Dec 2016 at 9:44 pm AEDT, after sunset. The Sun will be at its highest point in Sydney tomorrow at solar noon 12:53PM AEDT. Dawn is at 5:40AM AEDT.

Unlike last year's Summer Solstice, we'll probably get to see at least some sunshine.

Some fairly weak looking storm cells are just reaching Sydney's SW outskirts, e.g. the Picton and Mulgoa areas. I don't think they'll hang together as they encounter the sea breeze.

Today had a weak Northerly pattern that offered no resistance to the seabreeze, that got going early, even here. But then so did last Friday (although more NW) but the NW'er picked up.

It reached 37 in Sydney's outer West - Richmond, Penrith, Badgery's, Camden, but only 27 at OH and just short of 30 at the Airport. Out here, it probably reached the low 30s. Days like today must be a nightmare for BOM forecasters.

EDIT: just saw extended Storm Warning. That was unexpected. we'll see what, if anything, happens.

Steve777, just reading your comments on the Poll Bludger. You get around a bit.

Nearby flash-bang at Chatswood.

Those storms are moving quickly, now approaching me. Not rsining here yet and I think the mainactionmight pass to the North. Wind just now picking up, seems to be from the North but cooler.

First drops now and more thunder.

Yes, Greg, I like to read and comment on Pollbludger and Crikey when I've got time. Also a few other publications, e.g. the Guardian. Not the Daily Telegraph since they went behind a paywall (and they didn't publish my comments anyway).
Do younpost there? Who are you over there?

EDIT: now bucketing down.
