We have reasonable prospect of storms across large parts of NSW over these days. The 24th looks most interesting with a cold upper trough. This despite some other poor factors may promote hail.

The downside of the 24th is very little shear through much of the atmosphere. The usual plan in this condition is to get onto the storms early as anvils will spread everywhere shutting down convection, then move to the nearest clear air (if you can).

Interesting that the BOM forecast for Illawarra Saturday has "Partly cloudy. Medium (40%) chance of showers, most likely in the afternoon. The chance of a thunderstorm in the morning and afternoon, possibly severe"

This would be the highlands only I suggest.

Today along the ranges may surprise, lets hope !

Back on the coast again and I personally think for this area that today will be the best opportunity of getting something with a bit of shear to work with. Still it'll only be a very meagre chance and then tomorrow and Friday are probably almost 0% of a storm here due to pathetic shear.

Just went through entire NSW forecast, and severe has been slapped into all except Sydney.

It would suggest flash flooding main issue, followed by hail and in last place wind.

Not surprised Michael, if you look at 18z GFS for tomorrow the rain dances around the Metropolitan all afternoon/evening.

Omg I don't know what was going through my head when I wrote that post!! And worst thing is that I actually knew what day it was. Maybe because of that self inflicted fog this morning after night on the town.

Well, we're basically surrounded by lightning out here at Cooks Gap. It's been flashing and rumbling for about 3 hours now. So far though we've only had a few large spots of rain. I can see the lightning coming from the one out near you Greg, in fact the entire Western Horizon is flashing away merrily smile

Crazy storm last night at Orange - woke up at about 1am to constant thunder and lightning. After all that time down in Vic I forgot what that was like. Quite the light show, but couldn't will myself out of bed to shoot it. Was mostly cloud-obscured anyway. Bucket says 5mm from that smile

Still looks quite stormy out there, with a cell meandering around to my NW.

There were some impressive totals last night, intense slow moving storms but most places missing out. A bit of flash bang at my place but not much rain. Maybe today will be more widespread.

What I would give to see some decent shear today, not that it would matter to me anyway as I'm at work till 4pm.

Anyone out chasing today? good luck!!

Plenty of high cloud about and warm too, at least the sea gale is being kept quiet atm!!

Explosive towers towards my far south. Probably that dark core near Hill Top.

Absolute Anvil fest here, I'd be happy with anvil rain. The lawns are starting to brown up again and with this weeks forecast it doesn't look good.

To get a storm today it looks like you'll need to have one develop right over you. Or you could move to get under it and hope it lasts.

A cell is now developing North of Blackheath and, like the others, apparently not moving.

Nothing in the orange/bathurst area either, we are the hole in the donut of storms. It has been cloudy all day which I think is stopping convection from getting going. Hopefully something will develop later, I would hate to miss out with all this storm action around the place.

Thought there was a glitch on the Syd radar, but it would appear to be raining over Bondi, the beach cams confirm it - an onshore shower steered by the 'backwards' shear

Yep.
Check out the current NSW sat pic with lightning tracker on.
Unbelievable, yet not even a distant rumble here.

The LI's and CAPE are so good for this afternoon on the coast but no shear has completely offset that potential.

The western sky was rumbling for a couple of hours and it was very dark. Now it's cloudy and windless and we are drowned by the anvil cloud from decaying storms to the west.

Small towers trying to get going just to my immediate north and east. Maybe there's some hope yet.

The towers I was seeing may have been the rogue shower off bondi.

I too Eddy have heard a few distant rumbles although everything isn't moving much. I don't expect too much tonight, maybe a little light rain at best if any of those decaying storms move a little east

I'll be happy with a few anvil crawlers and 5mm would be nice as well, although I wont be ruling out a bit of overhead development just yet!!

I take it you are on the western side of Old Northern Rd?
Great view of the mountains from there.
Still nothing too loud here, but the radar is filling in and there's some development on the northern beaches so still, something is possible.
Such a spectacular looking sky this evening.

Actually, just got something a bit louder.
I love nights like tonight.

Getting some decent rain here from the storms, not often we do.
Temp dropped from 34C down to 19C in a couple of hours.
Certainly some thunder and lightening still around, nice for a change as it often bypasses Maitland.

Getting larger drops of Rain here, and loud rumbles of Thunder.
At least the Storm dropped into the Basin , was looking like it was just going to tease us for a while.

Storms seem to be on the move, entering Sydney's West. Thunderstorm warning now includes Sydney West of about Blacktown.

A few drops of rain in Chatswood. Thought I heard distant thunder (Kuringai Chase Cell?)

* * *

Very hot in Sydney's West during Christmas Week, 41 in Penrith on Thursday.

There is just the odd distant rumble here and there atm, but some nice steady rain. It's beautiful to hear on the roof after quite a sultry day.
Shame I watered the vegies at 4 pm thinking we wouldn't get anything.

Homeboy - lol.
It'll take a bit of time for me to get used to you being in Glenorie and not Quakers Hill.
Glenorie is a storm magnet so looking forward to your juicier updates. It's amazing how often they get storms and we don't. 5 K's north of Glenorie is even better!!

And lol at BOM.
Still no forecast update. Despite the afternoon 4.26 pm being completely wrong.
I'm guessing by 7.30 or 8.00 pm there might be something different after they have come back from their coffee break and checked the radar.

Steady light rain, enough for passers by to get out their umbrellas. And a single, loud crack of thunder. Now as I type a flash followed by another crack and roll a second later.

Enough to add to my storm spreadsheet. Number 11 for the season.

The forecast had to change already, the people in Terrey Hills wont be happy that the forecast was 'slight chance of shower', they're probably getting flooded by now.

Been rumbling and a few flashes here for an hour. A bit of rain. Nice for the garden and an early Xmas present! the radar looks weird with the showers/storms pulsing rather than moving in a definitive direction.

lol.

I've had an hour of steady rain here which is music to my ears while I make chicken rice paper rolls for Christmas Day tomorrow.
Currently a very pleasant 21.6 deg's.
Snowing nicely at Jackson Hole last time I checked this afternoon. Temp was -5.

I honestly would not doubt a 100mm reading a Muswellbrook, that storm was there for ages!!!

Yeah Homer but seriously not surprising. It is Christmas eve though.

It was -12, -13 at Jackson today according to Google. The snow was light and powdery, perfect for skiing. They had quite a good dump a couple of days ago at temps around -1 which was a lot more picturesque as the flakes were wetter and larger- a classic Snowies style fall.

Just the usual 4.20 forecast, although that changed at 4.26 pm and it wasn't much different.

This system is weird, it's now collapsing on itself from the east like the Skase empire.

Back to the snow cams- I found another one yesterday from Wisconsin. Perfect for those times the polar vortex decides to visit:

Went to a Xmas Service this evening at Merrylands. The service was full so I was lucky enough to have been forced to stick outside in a outside area that could be enclosed with large glass windows/doors Around.

At around 7:15 light rain started to fall. I did notice the cloud begin to lower and it get progressively darker.

At 6:30 moderate to just off heavy rain had set in. Constant rumbles of thunder and some distant flangs.

A quick check of the radar was showing a constant re-emerging cell just south of Paramatta. It was fantastic.

Closer to 7 pm and I felt a rush of electricity go through me and an ensuing boom which scared the living life out of our collective selves. Which left the children crying.

That was quite the experience which left me shaking momentarily, haha.

The rain eased up to more light rain and I've since come home. The booms and rumbles are still going and it's still raining lightly.

With well over two hours of boom crash opera and rain, I couldn't have asked for a better Christmas eve. grin grin

Greystanes is reporting 21 mm whilst Merrylands is reporting around about 10ish. Due to the stationary nature of the storms it's hard to say where it would've been with where I was. I'd say more so somewhere in between poke

Yeah, a fair bit of flashing towards the NW (Fairfield direction) observed here. The thunder, though, has to compete with the local Canberra residents letting off Christmas crackers.

I didn't think it was going to slowly encroach into the basin the way it did but we also have people letting off crackers in the rain. Lol

Look at the Sydney radar now - the incredible shrinking storm.

Everyone have a great day tomorrow.

Such a weird evening.
None, or not much rain forecast. Then, an hour and a half of really steady rain with plenty of flashes and rumbles and 12 mm's here.
It all came in from the north west. That's fair enough, but now it is contracting backwards from the east. WTF?

Yeah wow PS that would've been a bit scary.

Weird evening here as well. Completely calm and warm just before but suddenly a moderate and cool NWer has come up. Most of the windows in the house are open to let it in. It's going to be a long hot week without aircon working.

Thank you all for the kind words.

I've experienced flangs before but I've never felt such a rush of electricity go through me before like that during a storm. Quite the experience.

I would say it would have to do with the sheer. I was looking at the maps earlier this afternoon to see whether it would pick up and sheer seems to have veered in from the east. I was kind of hoping for some storms to come in from the east so the rain encroaching from the west had me even more off guard.

Though looks as though the easterly sheer has finally taken over.

Edit: looks like some weak cells going up over Roberson and north of heading west. Maybe there will be some more Xmas Eve surprises to come? smile

Givings better than receiving right Homer (so a sailor once told me)! Had 21mm at Glenorie, but im very keen to see what I picked up at Quakers Hill, have lived there for 14 years and have never cracked the 1000mm for the year (best 982.5mm), as of this morning was on 955.0mm ytd, ive told the missus im not moving til we reach the 'G', hopefully 15-20mms there and then I need a new years eve miracle to get me over the line! Thought I was home and hosed this year too when over 750mm in late june, guess I got complacent!.

Was on my way back to visit family in the Hunter last night and today, last night I got to experience the storm in Gunnedah, and it was a pretty big one (the radar wasn't lying). Torrential rain and constant lightning for a good 1-2 hours. Setting off from there today it was warm and humid and quite overcast so certainly had the feel of showers or storms developing. Leaving Singleton at approx 3.30pm this arvo there was a very dark section of cloud to the north east with a lot of lightning, and was moving south. This then combined with other showers and storm cells as it approached, and then became like a thundery rain mass, but with quite a lot of lightning and close strikes. And the rain was a real blessing I think with a dry week coming up.

Merry Christmas 😊

About 21C at Albion Park but oddly it's 24C here and that's with no breeze too.

Not much here but those storms did cause a few problems where they were sitting around not moving. Heard on the scanner that Lithgow had a flooding problem across a few streets, cops were torn between managing the holiday traffic and manning road blocks.

Muswellbrook was smashed.. over 100mm there leading to significant flooding. Tree damage as well, especially in western parts of town where I'd estimate gusts of 90-100km/h. Was also some small hail. Got these pics on the drive down to Sydney, Merry Christmas all! smile

Also, with the models.. I'd be banking on Sydney (Obs Hill and other suburbs), and some inland areas to have their hottest December on record after this spell of heat

Good stuff Ben.

The NE is in full swing early this morning, and some scud is also racing in with it.

Nice pics Ben, the Upper Hunter, and even Cessnock, does tend to get more fierce storms than around here.
Mind you we did get 35mm of rain til 9am, which was very good.
Hopefully we may get some more this evening.
Most rain this December has fallen over 3 days, although they have been significant and now close to the monthly average.

Looks like a few showers heading towards the Gap from the North East. Be interesting to see if they make it this far.

Thanks for posting those interesting pictures Ben.

Perfect Christmas weather today, clear blue skies, warm but not too hot or humid (27-32 across Sydney). It!s now ckear, mild and seabreezy.

Hope everyone has had / is having a great Christmas, I just got back from Christmas with family on the Central Coast.

Looks like quite a warm spell coming up, seven consecutive 29+ at OH, seven days of 35+ at Penrith, peaking at 38 / 43 at OH/Penrith on the 29th and 30th. About the same in the Illawarra coastal plain, even hotter in the Hunter. It looks set to end on New Years Day when we seem to switch to a more humid pattern. We might then need a rain thread, but that's ages away.

I'll start a heat thread tomorrow after I look at the updated models (although anyone else feel free to start one).

Yeah I was thinking about starting a new thread as well but you take the honours Steve.

I agree, we had absolutely ideal Christmas weather. Could not have asked for a better day-- thanks Santa!! It was a classic summer's day.

Saw an extremely large but very aggressive isolated rain cell looming over the mountains looking from Penrith. The core was absolute darkness.

Its gotten really windy on the beaches, gusts to 52km/h at the airport at almost 11pm. I'll throw in my 2 cents that we'll get a sea gale tomorrow. Bit skeptical about the 38C forecast for Thurs with an E/NE'er but then again I have been wrong recently laugh See what happens

Nice pics Ben from Muswellbrook !!

I chased very messy stuff on Southern Tablelands. Only a few bolts before rain set in.

In secomnd boly you can hear tick of step leader, as a reaction I hit pause (x*&^#) for a split second.
